  1. Thanks for this. In the end I managed to get some new ones on an exchange basis from brakeparts.co.uk New discs, pads, callipers and hoses - I hope no more issues with brakes binding. The wheel bearings both run smooth, so hopefully this is now sorted!
  2. Thanks for the reply, I need to get the car back on the road sooner rather than later though... Any idea of any of the polo carriers and callipers fit? I've seen TRW brakes do OE replacements, but they are not always available in a reasonable time frame.
  3. Hello gang. Does anybody know what brake callipers are compatible with the GTI? (I want to keep it standard) My near side front caliper seized up and is causing me a heap of trouble. Parts seem to be hard to get from breakers. While I'm happy to buy new, they're not exactly cheap! So my question is are they the same as any of the Polo 6N2 brakes? I have some spare disc's and pads already, so I'd like to use them, rather than get into doing a brake conversion. Cheers
  4. I have the same problem with mine. Compressor was changed and engages when the button is pressed. System holds pressure and the light comes on, but no cold air. Rad fan doesn't run. I changed the relay you are talking about too. Its under behind the NS head lamp, but is easier to remove the wheel arch liner and get at it that way. :-(
  5. Thanks for the reply. In the end I got a genuine bearing, couldn't mess about.. just wanted it right. I suppose I've learned to be a bit careful when trusting motor factors for GTI stuff. I've had the wrong discs and ball joints before. Car drives like new now. haha. Its a sturdy thing this Lupo.
  6. Hello gang. Silly question! Are GTI front wheel bearings (AVY engine code) different to those for a normal Lupo? Sounds daft, but I've had all manner of trouble sourcing parts for mine - example being ball joints & front discs. A couple of motor factors I've dealt with seem to have iffy data about the GTI. Things show us as compatible with AVY, but in fact they're not. Its not a big deal, but I'm on a bit of a tight turn around to get a wheel bearing done one afternoon this week. Best, Alex
  7. In which case, new boots all round :-)
  8. As it turns out, my GTI doesn't have an alternator clutch - although many Lupo's do. Has anybody tried to change the tensioner pulley using one of these spares? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLKSWAGEN-JETTA-LUPO-BEETLE-Fan-Belt-Tensioner-Pulley-V-Ribbed-Belt-Idler-/141810778750?hash=item210494c27e:g:FGUAAOSwo0JWLDXs
  9. I have this at the rear as well. It was very hard to wind the callipers back when I changed the rear discs.. not sure if that is something to do with it.
  10. Glad I just read this about rubbing - my GTI came with 195/50/15 and they rub on lock in reverse. Always wondered what that was! Opinions on how daft will it look with 50 at rear at 45 up front? I'm looking at some Falken tyres in 195/45, but the rears are unworn - so am tempted not to just throw them away. Used to like the Falken 912 on my s16 pug - always seemed like a good budget sport tyre.
  11. I guess it could be either - car has AC. The alt clutch just seemed like the most likely culprit, but nobody seems to know for sure if the Lupo gti alternator has a clutch type pulley - or not.
  12. Hello guys, Does anybody know if Lupo gti alternators use a clutch pulley, or not? I have a weird noise coming from that end of the engine when cold (not present with aux belt removed). Sounds *a bit* like this: Spoke to my local VW place today, they recon that some alternators that fit the gti do have a clutch pulley, some don't... My pulley turns the alternator both ways, so its either a knackered clutch type, or if its not a clutch type the problem is not the alternator Any help appreciated.
  13. The other thing I've considered is how these 600 quid setups compare to a B12 kit (which I believe includes the pro kit springs)? In my case I don't especially want to lower the car. A little bit might be OK, but given the quality of the roads where I live - 20mm or so would probably be the most I'd attempt.
  14. Just read the entire thread. I'm looking to sort my GTI beucasue the handling is vague as hell. I think its on the original dampers/springs, so am not surprised. Trouble is I can't justify spending 600+ on a setup for a car that hardly gets used. The AP kit seems's attractive, but the fact that they seem to rust like hell is a bit of a worry. In the same vein, I see that AP do some none adjustable kits, that are presumably also OK... does anybody have experience with those?
  15. Yes possibly! I think they were both pretty duff though. Actually I have a feeling I killed them leaving them on the floor when I'm a 5-a-side footy. Can get a bit wet sometimes, so probably eventually fubar'd the remote! Works a treat now
  16. The Dirko stuff that GSF sell for VW sumps is pretty good. Did my old 106 S16 that way - dry as a bone.
  17. Just to close the loop on this, I ended up having to buy a new remote fob. Euro VW Canterbury sorted it out for me and were great. The cost wasn't too silly and they basically diagnosed 2x busted fobs.
  18. As per the topic title. I'm after some qood quality GTI coilovers, an engine cover and centre caps for my allows. Give me a shout if you have anything. Cheers.
  19. Little update for the record. This is quite an easy job, but its time consuming and messy. Definitely better if you can drop the box a little, otherwise its hard to clean the surface that mates with the end cover. You can see that there are 2x bearings in fig. 23 above that are disturbed during the procedure. As such you need to be really careful not to be rough getting the end cover off the box - don't be whacking it too hard. My box had around 1L of very clean oil in it. So it looks like I got to it just in the nick of time. Luckily the car has only driven about a mile like this, so I'm not expecting any damage. Onto poly bushes and OE suspension replacement next. Was going to sell up and buy a cooper s or a swift sport - but I much prefer the Lupo GTI styling. Silly car!
  20. !! Thats crazy. Well, I don't 'think' that is the case here. Going to grab some sealant and drain plug tool tomorrow, see if i can't solve this little problem before it gets worse!
  21. Was there anything up with your end cover, or was it just a case of resealing the unit? My impression is that the cover is simply held in my 5 bolts. So its a case of drain the box, remove the cover, clean up the surfaces and reseal. I used a dirko product on my old 106 S16 sump and that was always bone dry after the new engine went in. Never had a great deal of luck with silicone type sealers. Any pointers on this one folks? http://www.gsfcarparts.com/982aa0330
  22. Hello folks, Just noticed the sinister smell of transmission fluid coming from the loop Having cleaned it up and been around the block, I can see its weeping a touch from the end cover (mine has a 6 speed box). Does anybody know if the cover (in the picture below) uses a gasket, or just a sealant of some kind? Pretty sure this isn't coming from anywhere else - such as selector seal. Shaft seals are bone dry. Tightening the bolts a helped a little, but I noticed they use plastic washers behind the cover bolts - presumably to prevent over tightening. Also, I guess if they use a hard sealant, tightening is not really going to work. Resealing the end seems straightforward enough to do with the box on.. anybody else done it on theirs? Cheers, Indie
  23. Thanks so much for the attachment. I'll go have a look and report back to the list
  24. My impression was that once you can talk to the module, you can perform key pairing that way? After some playing around, I managed to fix the radio signal - simply re-soldered the powered aerial wire and checked the connections. Radio now works great. I did try your suggestion, but this didn't seem to change the remote fob range. In light of the radio now having great signal I'd speculate that the antenna for the fob is elsewhere, either that or my keys are both knackered.
  25. Thats good to know. Its hard to tell when you hook one of these things up, if it should registering something for a module, or if its just not supported in that particular car. haha definitely be interested in any suggestions :-)
