    The aim is to restore to standard (although I do like the steering wheel and gearknob Jamie has installed) which will be a long process, it also needs a full respray in addition to the rust sorting. It didn't skip a beat on the ~300 mile journey home so I'm reasonably confident it doesn't need anything major mechanically, in fact the gearbox is a hell of a lot smoother than the one on my 68 plate Up! GTI!

I have a 2023 plate GTI with 2,700 miles on it, it was delivered with a broken passenger seat height adjuster, the drivers side window mechanism collapsed and the glass would pop out of the rubbers, rear suspension rattles, dashboard creaks, there is an annoying turbo wastegate noise every time you lift off (which I don't think is normal but I need to try another one to see really). Not to mention lack of one-touch windows, no backlit window and mirror switches, abysmal headlights and rubbish ventilation, no bonnet strut, hard plastic door cards etc. All this for £20k. It has a boot light though which you never got on a Lupo.

    I like the engine and it drives very well and is economical but it's annoying me too much for me to enjoy it at the moment. 

    On my second UP GTI, 14 months ownership in total with 5K miles covered and no issues whatsoever. The Up GTI is what it is. My wife has just taken delivery of a brand new Polo GTI and at £30K, I am not sure its 50% better than a 20K Up GTI. Each to their own of course.

    I take it you aren't a fan lol. I have to say I am quite taken by my Up GTI. Things move on of course but I find it much more enjoyable to drive than my Lupo GTI's.

    Your comparison of an Up to "various Lupo's and Arosa's" is based on driving just one Up?

    Yep that's my understanding there are only 5 Laser Blue GTI'S. I know of 2 members on here who are long term owners and I have seen a third one pop up for a short while until the member moved it on as his daily commute had increased significantly.

    Thanks for the offer but having had three GTI's the next one has to be Laser so it could be a long wait. Its not so much the performance of the GTI that attracts me, it's the old school VW treatment to produce it. I believe the only body panel a GTI shares with any other Lupo is the tailgate. Add in the other things such as the changes to the body shell and the aluminium bonnet and doors and I think you have one special car.

A TDI has all the advantages and non of the drawbacks [bar the brakes, but a 280mm kit can solve those ] and you can drive it, you don't need to hide it waiting for a sunny day

    Well I have just baugh YB05GYU and it is still not fixed been sat under a tree in Leicester for about 2 years! It still has the leather seats and the AC still works, I have removed the front end and started buying replacement parts for it.

The Goodyears had done 15k miles in 4 years and still had a good amount of tread but the sidewalls were cracked to hell and there were cracks running inside the tread too, very dangerous!

    That's a good alternative thanks. It's a difficult one as the Goodyears on my car have plenty of life in them as they are only 18 months old and have done 10K miles. I have just been away in it for a few days and did approximately 400 miles in some pretty awful weather and I didn't have any problems with the Goodyears. Not sure I want to chuck approximately £300-£400 at a new set of tyres yet.

    Whilst it's early days I would say on balance very much yes. I find it more fun to drive and much less of a headache worrying what's going to go wrong next with a Lupo and where I am going to source the parts.
