Yeah I've done this loads of times... Just about every vw bee sting antenna rubber base mount seal thing perishes because of the heat and UV radiation in sunlight.
Get some silicone grease or spray to lube the base before stretching into place.
On eBay search for:

Yeah, talk about the aftermath... Kick you when you're down comes to mind. It's not just the car that's gone, but all the paperwork, police stuff and disposal. And then there's the stuff that was inside the car. Its like, think right now what you have in your car... There are bits that are in the cubby holes, on the seats and stuff in the back. My driving licence was in there (yeah- stupid I know), driving and sun glasses, phone charger, bluetooth hifi adapter, some CDs, business receipts, work boots and probably other stuff I can't remember. All that stuff which makes up everyday life, and generally must be replaced as it's all needed. When I went through the wreck what amazed me is that they didn't nick the Kenwood HiFi in there which was worth a few quid on its own, with dab, mp3, satnav and built in gsm.... I've kept a glob of melted Ali which was under the engine which I've turned into a highly polished keyring as a memory to my machine.
I'm going to give my mk2 restoring projects a rest till next year, and get that spare lupo I bought recently going, which is presently off road. I'll keep battling with the insurance but I don't have much time to keep on at them. I'd rather work more and earn it back which is easier!
I have to say that you are all brilliant. Thanks for your thoughts and comments which have made me feel way better. Thumbs up!

video from one of my cameras. i was asleep just 30ft away... I only heard them when they started the engine, but too late.

Car found this morning by dog walker in field 5h after being nicked. sadly insurance have already declined to pay up as car is not on a public highway... what?!?! Accidents, and fire are only covered when car is involved in incident on public highway. Not a field. "But it was stolen then they torched it!?!" Nope. read the small print. And I have to pay £200+ for recovery and ecological damage(?) to farmers land too!!!
Completely choked up as I've already spent over 400h restoring it. I wouldn't have minded if they'd have stripped it for parts or cloned it, because at least in my mind the car would have lived on as a donor.... Absolutely nothing on it that is salvagable. Zero.
Devastated.
I'll dig out the CCTV footage and post some stills when I get a minute. The police noticed that they were wearing nightvision glasses.

My red 1990 classic mk2 golf was stolen from our drive at 04:12 this morning.
One of 43 four door models left in the UK.
Only red model with four doors for a hundred miles.
Faded red paint about to be resprayed.
H118XJD
Decent reward to anyone who helps me recover it in one piece.
I'm very sad.
I bought this classic as a hobby car to restore and have a barn full of parts ready to fit. Please pass on to to everyone you know, and everyone they know...
Camera footage indicates that it's in the reading area.
Thanks to anyone who keeps their eyes open. You're looking for an old faded red H reg hatchback in good nick, with four doors, steel wheels and a tow bar.
Sadly the parts are now worth much more than the car, so time is of the essence.
Thanks to anyone who reads this, and for keeping your eyes peeled!
PM me or post here if you or anyone you know spots a car of that description.
Thanks people in my time of need... -
Yeah I discovered this too when rebuilding my SDI. On my 2002 model, there's a dbw throttle potentiometer, which looks like it was adapted to work with a cable throttle. There's a short length of steel cable that attaches (with great difficulty) to the pot' from the end of the throttle pedal. If you lift the pedal, it simply flexes the steel cable. There is no way to adjust it as far as I can tell, other than bending the entire throttle pedal, to lift the bit that your foot rests on. I had to remove the pedal to bend it. It originally never went higher than 56%, which explains why a lot of people think the SDI is gutless! My little machine goes like a train now...

I did this the other day... You need to force the plastic sleeve that clamps the gaiter to the knob apart. It has a serrated edge where you need to push in a flat blade screwdriver to slide the sleeve down the shaft away from the knob. Then everything becomes obvious.

Bump... still looking. Rich's A6 winder handles are just too good for my poverty spec SDI.

I'll be very interested to know how you get around the ignition timing issues. Everything else will be straight forward. After market ignition system is what I'd use. You need vacuum advance, tps/map and Rpms as inputs. Could also use a knock sensor.... I'd also upgrade the cat. My guess is that you may see a 30% power increase at high Rpms. Twin 40-40 dellorto carbs is what I'd use! Great project.

try connecting the stick to the control shaft?

Don't keep us all in the dark? What oil are you running Sir...?
Synthetic tractor hypoid dif oil. Good stuff. Thicker, but makes the transmission nice n quiet. Been two years almost now and it runs sweet as.

I've tried PMing a few people who mention that they're breaking but no response!
So I'll try a wanted post in the breaking section (please don't flame me).
I need a black interior window winder handle and leather stick gaitor for my new SDI.
Oh, and a beesting antenna.
thanks people.

I get 80 mpg all day, but I did mod the engine slightly. I posted on here how to do the inlet plenum mod, rearranging the way the egr works and gas flowing the ram tubes. I'm going to do same mod to my 2nd SDI that we got a couple of weeks back. I also run a different oil in the box. And we're on Michelin green X tyres. I drive it quite hard, but do shift early. For eco fuel runs, you cane it then coast for Max economy... I can't remember what rpms give you Max torque in a 1.7 sdi, but that is usually the Max efficiency running point for an engine at Max throttle. If it's at say 2000rpm, then cane it at about 2000, then coast, then cane it and then coast.... Keep doing that and you'll get well over 100mpg! Not very practical though.

I need one for my SDI...

I posted a pictoral how to overhaul the wiper/light switches thing a while back... lots of pics
My guess is that is what it was as the contacts wear out.

Just bought another SDI, as after a flawless and very frugal year with the first silver SDI, I couldn't pass up the opportunity of getting another that was parked down the road with a for sale sign in the window. Haggled down from £1400 to £750 over two weeks as they couldn't sell it, probably because t was advertised wrong! Ha!
Didn't really need the car, but hey, good SDIs are hard to find now.
SO for the details:
Poverty spec 53 plate (now that I'm used to the 'S' spec you really notice the difference- especially central locking).
Black. Perfect paint job, no resprays, scuffs or dents.
Interior very good, just needs a valet.
Good gearbox. Can't tell if the pedal box was changed at some point. Clutch is light and smooth like my silver Loop.
No rust in any of the usual spots.
Full VAG history!
Cambelt just changed. Not sure on water pump, idler or tensioner. Need to exlore at some point. Same goes for all service stuff.
87k miles.
I'm the 3rd owner from new.
Door hinges and straps like new.
Tiny dent just in front of the antenna. Drivers window winder missing/snapped off. Dodgy front wheel bearing (are there any that haven't gone?!?!). Broken beesting antenna. Gear shifter gaitor a bit tatty. water in LHS indicator repeator. Needs new disks and pads. Tiny chip in windscreen. Haven't checked below the car yet, but judging by the rest I'm sure all is in order.
Needs Alloys. Needs central locking and 'S' spec seat mechanisms.
The plan is to get this thing back up to new condition, and maybe enhance a few features. perhaps 'cal look' the front and rear bumpers. I'll keep you all posted.
Any other ideas what else I could do with it over the next year?

This afternoon, I decided to sort my annoying clicking indicators and random wiper action. So I took some shots while I was working. Three hours will cover you working at a leisurely pace.
Some pics to add... 🙂
Use a sharp blade or craft knife to shave a bit of plastic off.
And to reassemble, do the exact reverse. The Airbag module slots in at the bottom edge then you simply press it in place till it clicks. Do not turn power on while airbag is disconnected. If in doubt disconnect the battery to be safe.

Cheers, you were right , broken wire in loom, all fixed now.. But the window has some play in it when it's fully up....
Where was the break in the wiring? Inside the door, at the hinge point or under the dash? I have the exact same problem with my passenger window... Just not enough time to explore it properly right now.
