I think that I'd rather have a LHD if I was going to go exotic

does look daft, I wonder how long the clutch and g/box last

I agree it's not all bad, Lupo's seem devoid of rust problems and are roomy and quite a charming vehicle to drive, I'd still chose one over a French or Italian alternative. My criticism is that the whole VW ethos was developed around continuity, the constant development of the Beetle over a 40 year period, this set the brand apart from the built in obsolescence of virtually every other vehicle manufacturer.
The transition to the front wheel drive Golf was difficult but the model was reliable, decent value and although it only lasted 10 years [18 if you count the convertible] the carryover of engines and parts into the Mk2 gave considerable continuity and an improved vehicle. I suppose what I'm saying is that if you get the basics right which I believe they did with the Lupo there is no need to change for change sake, keep refining it till you achieve perfection

If you develop any familiarity with the Lupo/Arosa you start to notice the same faults that occur and recur with an almost predictable certainty
Window electrics that fail
Door check straps that at best squeak and clang
Fault codes, EPC, airbags engine management
Pedal Box failure
Gear linkages
Gear box
rear springs snapping
Some of these are or should be cheap fixes, nor is this a long list and given the 7 year life span you have to ask why these issues were never resolved, if they had been I'd argue that there would have been no need for the Fox, [a sales disaster] nor for the Up/Mii/Citigo
I had a Mk 2 Golf GTI and a Scirocco GTX 16v that I kept for over 15 years with very few problems the one exception being the rear calipers which needed regular maintenance/replacement so coming to the Lupo I am shocked at how poor VW have become at resolving issues that ought not happen, they are pissing away their reputation

If you have lots of potholes and speedbumps I wouldn't bother, you are asking for sump damage. Fit a slightly larger circumference tyre that will fill your arches and give you a better ride

What feels like a shunt on changing in the lower gears that disappears at speed and in the higher range

Hi,
TDIs all seem to qualify for the £30 rate as do the later 2001 on SDIs has anyone queried this with the DVLA given the earlier cars engines are the same as the later ones in terms of power and CO2 output
-
linkages checked one part replaced, will go through the box up and down with the engine off but not with it running

My TDI's gearbox has a problem that's baffling both me and my local VW specialist. There are no issues going up the gearbox, 1-2-3-4-5 but on the way back down 5-4 is fine but to get into 3 you need to press the gear box to where 2nd is before pushing it into the 3rd slot 3-2-1 are fine. Any ideas anyone, it's not stopping me use the car as its something you just adapt to but if my wife wants to use the car I'll get earache

thanks

three questions in 1 does anyone know what the difference is between the two diesel gearboxes, their respective codes, and if they are compatible. By the latter is it possible to swap a SDI box into a TDI
-
not just stiffen; the whole rear suspension is weak, both springs and dampers
-
got one of those too, still waiting for an MOT
-
on the 1.4 16v ?
-
not in the least, I have too many cars as things are, it's going to a young bloke near me who breaks and re-cycles them
-
that makes sense and even rebuilding a gearbox to suit the diesel would still leave you with a box unable to cope with the diesels torque
-
no I've haven't heard of that, I have but a coolant sealer through which is holding at the moment but can't see it enduring even short term, do you have any brand names or is this widely available stuff
-
looking like heater matrix, wet passenger footwell steam through the vents. This was a serious issue for VW going back to the 1980s with MK2 Golfs the recall costs were horrific.
-
similar sort of question but with a TDI in mind, has anyone fitted a 6 speed box from a GTI to this model or are the gear ratios all wrong
-
GSF pose the 35% off on a random basis most often it's just 20% using the CC code but you can routinely get 25% off by using CLUB25
-
recaro type, they aren't real recaros, they are VWs attempt broadly similar to the type I once had in a Mk2 Golf, the fabric is a mix or black and blue sections same as the rear seats
-
they are blue/black recaro type seats, they match the rest of the interior so I'd say they were a factory fit.
-
ok can't transfer phone picture but will do one later from a proper digital camera, both front seats have a patch with airbag printed on them on their respective road side shoulders
