I don't want to scare anybody, but here is my tale of woe. Bought my sport a few months ago, was informed by the owner that it sounded tappety, which was reflected in the price. Having played with many 16v golfs over the years, I knew I would be able to sort it cheaply & easily. WRONG!! On this model, the cams are mounted in the rocker cover (cam carrier), on inspection I found the bearing journals that support the cams, had a small amount of play, which was creating the tappety noise due to the cams flexing & whipping about, and on strip down, found all the housings, and the cam bearing surfaces badly scored. Weeks of searching & research followed, the result being that both cams & carrier were scrap! Cost over £700 to replace, and took opportunity to overhaul head with new tappets, seals & gasflowing, new oil pump, all belts & tensioners. The cause; too much sealant applied to sump, which had come away & was sucked up into oil pick up strainer, almost blocking it, and also causing oil light to come on regularly, and starving top end of oil. I hope for your sake this isn't the problem!!
