  1. Thank you mk2! Looking at this video about replacing the temperature sensor, I realized that I have replaced it once many years ago. I will give it a try once I have found a new sensor.
  2. My 1.4 Lupo is having a hard time starting when cold. The engine dies at once the first time I turn the key. The second time I turn the key the engine dies a second later than the first time. The third time still a little later, until after maybe five times it doesn't die. The idle is very unstable, and the engine dies if I press the throttle. Once I get to this stage that the engine idles and doesn't die, I have to wait half a minute or so before I can drive from the parking lot without the engine dying. This happens every time I start the car when the engine is cold. But there are no problems starting if the engine is warm. I can drive a few minutes then park and start the engine without any problems 30 minutes later. I have not noticed any problems while driving. Where should I start looking? Anyone experienced the same symptom? I don't have anything to read fault codes with.
  3. Thanks for teaching me a new word 🙂 The scuttle is clean. All the cables seen on the picture go straight down, I guess somewhere behind the fuse box. To me the cables look a little too exposed, but I have nothing to compare with. How are the cables and the hole where the cables go in inside the scuttle supposed to be sealed? Is the plastic hose seen on my second picture to the far right supposed to be that short? It could be 10 cm longer to cover the cables all the way I think. How much plastic do I need to remove from underneath the steering wheel in order to see where the water might find its way?
  4. Primary suspect: Water. Friday: Heavy rain and extreme fog. Saturday: Wipers wipe every time I brake. Sunday to Tuesday: Same as Saturday. Wednesday: No driving. Car parked outside under a roof. Thursday: All OK. Wipers and brake work normally. So the problem got fixed by itself. I haven't seen or felt any water inside the car. The circuit board is under the steering wheel behind the fuse box. Opening the bonnet and looking inside the space under the windshield, where the motor and arms are for the wipers, made me suspect that there is water coming in from there. There was water dripping from the bonnet down through a hole on the cables when I opened the bonnet. You can see that the brown cables are wet on the pictures. Does this look normal to you? Are the cables supposed to be exposed like this, or is there something missing from my car? https://imgur.com/a/Xv9d0c2 https://imgur.com/a/nvzAbgf
  5. Yes I replaced the original relay with relay 99. Is it this relay that also controls the rear wiper and the flushing action, or is it a separate control somewhere? The circuit board does not move about.
  6. Well I guess I live more to the North than most of you. I live in Sweden. There are plenty of snow, ice, water and salt on the roads over here. What or which part makes the rear wiper go back and forth three times when flushing the rear window? When I hit the brake for less than a second, the rear wiper goes three times fast while the front wiper goes only once. So it behaves as if I was to flush the rear but not the front when I brake.
  7. I've had the car for 10 years. Pedal box has not been replaced during that time. I've replaced the relay for the front wipers a little more than a year ago to a later model that can be programmed. The original was broken anyway. To my knowledge that relay is only for the front wipers. The timing belt and pipes for servo fluid were replaced almost a month ago by a garage. Two days later the generator died. That one got replaced with an after market by a garage. Now this. I can't see a connection between this and the replaced generator, but it feels a bit strange that everything is happening at once. I probably just have to accept that the car is old and get used to this kind of things, if I'm going to keep it.
  8. Thanks for the not so encouraging words. I did a quick assessment. I pulled out fuse number 15 which is the fuse for the brake light. When the fuse was out, the wipers didn't move when I hit the brake. Both wipers worked as expected while the fuse for the brake light was missing. I put back all the fuses. Then removed the fuse for the rear wiper. Rear wiper was dead no matter what. Front wiper went off when I hit the brake. The brake light functions correctly. My conclusion is that there is a short between the brake light cable and both the rear and front wiper cables. In which places are all of these three wires close to each other? The fuse box is the only place I can guess. What is the next step?
  9. I found this howto about the stalks: It does feel like a short between the brake light and wipers. The wipers go off every time I brake and only then (unless I operate the wipers as usual with the button or lever). How do I get my hands on the cables at hinge point? Is there a connector hidden somewhere there? But if there is a short somewhere at the back of the car, is it possible for the front wipers to go off?
  10. Hello, Now all of a sudden every time I hit the brake, both rear wiper and windshield wiper start going full speed. Once I lift my foot off the brake they stop wiping after a few seconds. This is very annoying and makes me not want to brake, which is not healthy... Anyone had the same problem? Any ideas on where to start looking?
  11. Thanks for the replies, but I still don't understand how much and how to remove things from the front.
  12. Hello, I'm about to replace my faulty alternator. I haven't started yet as I want to prepare as much as possible since it's very cold outside. The one I have is 70A. I ordered a 70A alternator but received 90A. My guess is that they are interchangeable and I'm good to go? I have read this great post: https://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?/topic/92672-how-to-replace-alternator-includes-pics/ But I realized that the alternator is too big to remove without removing something else first, unless there is room underneath the car that I can't see. See picture: https://imgur.com/a/m7R0BNP I have read this discussion about the SDI: But my engine is a 1.4 petrol and I really hope it's easier to replace. Which parts do I have to remove in order to get the old alternator out and the new one in? Is it enough to remove the long plastic part that goes on top of the headlights? How do I remove it? Any pointers are greatly appreciated.
  13. I had a broken wheel bearing left front wheel about a year ago. The sound was different and I could hear that it came from the left front wheel. This sound is a little different but I will check for it anyway.
  14. My Lupo started making noise. At first it was just a little. Now it's more. The noise sounds almost like the sound that comes from tyres on asphalt, but a lot louder. The weird thing is that the sound disappears almost completely if I steer right. So the sound is there if I drive straight or left. The sound is not there if the car is standing still even if the engine is running. I have tried to locate the sound by sticking my head out while driving, but once I stick my head out I can't hear it. I am not able to locate the direction of the sound while driving. So maybe it comes from the middle of the car? At first I suspected the exhaust system since it is rusty. But since the noise does not seem to be correlated to how I hit the gas pedal and the thing with the sound disappearing once I steer right, I think it must be something else. I have a hard time troubleshooting this since I am not able to locate the source of the sound. Anyone else experienced this same thing? Any ideas of where to look?
  15. Thanks for the great news! So it does not actually matter if the thing is open for a long time then?
  16. I took a closer look at the engine of my car as I tried to figure out where the EGR valve is located. To the lower right of the engine, underneath the EGR. I found a hole. The hole has a cap/lid that can (and most probably should) be closed. Isn't that the gearbox? What is that hole used for? See a photo that I took of it: http://postimg.org/image/jrrupdwy9/ I closed the cap to the hole. I have no idea of how long it has been open. Could it be that I should replace the gearbox oil now in order to get rid of dirt that probably went down that hole? Thankful for any clarification on this.
  17. This is kind of embarrassing... I wanted to remove the air cleaner on my Lupo 1.4 today in order to see the stuff underneath it. I have this very good instruction on how to do it. It should be straight forward. Still there was something holding the air cleaner there. I could not pull it off the engine. I did not want to pull the cleaner any harder because it felt as if I would break it otherwise. I even opened the box up to see if there was a screw inside keeping it in place. Here is the instruction: http://i.solidfiles.net/48c664e59b.jpg I did all the steps. It's the final step: "Remove air cleaner", which I had a problem with. There is something holding the cleaner to the engine at approximately where the number 2 is on the picture. Is there a special technique to yank it off? Do I have to pull, twist or something else?
  18. OK found a picture of the location. I haven't looked under the hood yet. The pictures might be of interest to someone. Part number 11: http://www.solidfiles.com/d/79356849a4/ Part number 2: http://www.solidfiles.com/d/fd73187097/
  19. I haven't found the exact problem yet. I did some other service on the car. The mechanic found fault code 00519. See: http://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?/topic/97135-where-is-intake-manifold-pressure-sensor-g71-located/ So far I think that I have a problem with one of the sensors, most probably the intake manifold pressure sensor. But I have not ruled out the camshaft sensor yet, or an air leak. I will try and locate the intake manifold pressure sensor and have a physical look at it and the wires going to it, just to see if it looks damaged. Then probably replace it. The problem is that it is getting cold and dark outside and I don't have a garage where to work with the car. (So if anyone has a picture of the sensor or any other tips on how I can find it quickly... ;-) )
  20. There are several calculators for this on the Internet. I found this with google for example: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
  21. I had the same problem with one of my widows. Sometimes the passenger side window would go down all of a sudden. I also had a problem controlling the passenger side window from the drivers side every now and then. I replaced the switch on the drivers side and the problem disappeared. My guess is that it is the switch on the drivers side on your car, since it controls both windows.
  22. Hi, I have a fault code 00519 on my Lupo 1.4. The code has to do with intake manifold pressure sensor, G71, AKA MAP intake air pressure sensor. I found this on ebay which I think is the one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-MAP-Intake-Air-pressure-sensor-VW-LUPO-POLO-Vento-/260411001581 Where can I find it in my car? My guess is that I have to remove some hose that goes into the engine before I can get my hands on the sensor. Anyone here ever replaced that sensor? Any kind of help is appreciated.
  23. Thanks danoid (again)! I tried to search for it before I posted, but did not find anything.
  24. How do you replace the brake lights located on the top of the rear door? I unscrewed the three philips screws under the black cover, but then what? I suspect that the red part can be removed somehow after the screws are not there holding it. But I could not figure out how to remove it without bending it. Anyone here done it before?
