Tal
Hi there! My names Joe, Ive got a Seat Arosa 1.0 Mk2 in blue. Its my first car and I'm new to all the modding etc but I am willing to learn!Basically my issue is:Ive bought an Alpine Type R SWR-1222D Subwoofer in a ported box.The box is far to big for the boot and im wanting to find out first:Can I build any shape box as long as its the right volume for the sub?Im wanting to raise up the boot floor and mount this sub backwards so the frame is facing into the boot using the spare wheel space to hopefully fit a box. What amp/wiring kit is best to buy for this sub?I dont want to spend loads on the amp to be honest as the sub has cost me next to nothing. (Reclaimed debt). The sub is 500w RMS I think but it's 4 and 2 ohm which is where I'm confused. All help will be very much appreciated. Thanks a lot
Pete91
When you're building the box just use the capacity listed for the sub. Make sure you check whether the capacity is for ported or sealed and matches the type of box you're making. Also, when calculating the internal volume make sure to account for the width of the material (most folk use 18mm mdf). For wires i used 4 guage but that was hefty overkill. For you I'd probably just use 14. But tbh you're as well just using the biggest you can fit into the amp.As for amps I'll have a look later when I'm on a comp What's the budget? Tal
Nice one mate so I could have the box running like a rectangle under the floor and in the spare wheel hole? Ill try draw a picture later and post it on to show what I'm wanting to do. Budget is about £200 but I know a lot of cheap places for amps just don't know what amps to buy. Thanks a lot mate. Pete91
There should be enough room to just have a rectangle that lays flat on the floor. Unless I'm not understanding what you are saying lol? Have a look in my build thread for mine if you like
Tal
Managed to get a picture together of what I'm hoping to achieve. Its not to dimensions or anything its just a rough idea of what I'm planning. Reckon I can keep the spare wheel like this? Pete91
you want the sub sticking out of the box?
Tal
Not sure on the clearance underneath could I have it the other way then? Box might have to go into the spare wheel I think. This is the spec for the sub I got from manufacturers website.SPECIFICATIONSPower Handling12" Subwoofer (2ohm + 2ohm) Power Range: 200 - 500 Watts RMS Power Handling: 500 Watts Peak Power Handling: 1500 WattsDimensions Mounting Depth: 195 mm (7.7'') Mounting Diameter: 275 mm (10.9'') Displacement: 0.071 see you. ft (Front Mount) Added Volume: 0.085 see you. ft. Tal
Spotted this amp? Reckon it will do the trick? Im sure I can wire the sub at 4 ohm. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alpine-MRD-M300-V12-600w-300w-RMS-Class-D-Mono-Car-Amplifier-/390528263983?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item5aed4c672f Edited January 25, 2013 by Tal
Pete91
Here's what you should be looking at:
Pete91
You're aiming for 0.75 cubic feet if it's sealed and 1.38 cubic feet if it's vented
Pete91
So what you need to do (if you want it to sit on the boot floor and keep the spare wheel and have the top of the box flush with the trim) is measure the width of the boot and the height from the floor to the boot trim bit. Tal
Its gunna be sealed if I can so box is smaller. Drafted up a quick measurement guide and 2 possible locations for the box is there anyway i can work out a box size to fit?The width of the boot at the bottom of the seats to the boot lid is 43cm and the top of the seats to boot lid is 20cm. Pete91
mate i'm well confused by your diagram haha. All you need to use is the formula volume = length x breadth x heightYou know the volume you need (0.75 cubic feet which equals 21.23763 litres). What i would do is stick your amp under the seats and use the boot just for the sub like what this guy has done:http://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=73088
Tal
Haha sorry mate thats looking into the boot from the back of the car. Ill search through that thread it looks good mate cheers! Your a star.
Pete91
What you could do is just use the shape that the guy in the thread i posted has done as to top face and make a rectangle box underneath. That way you can measure the depth from the boot latch to the boot floor, the length from the boot latch to the bottom of the seats and just plug those numbers straight into the formula above. that way you'll know exactly what width your box will need to be to match the recommended volume No worries man, anything else just give us a shout
Tal
Just pricing wood up now mate gunna go buy some later. Ive measured it a bit low I can go right up to the bottom of the lid which is handy as this sub sticks out a lot! Ill let you know mate thanks a lot! Tal
Sorry to bother you again pal.. Just looking at amps and I've found this: Brand: Alpine Amplifier Type: Mono Type: Mono Channel RMS Power: 300w x 1 at 2 ohms MPN: MRD-M300 Would that be ok to power my sub:[subwoofer Power Features]• Peak Power 1500W• RMS Power 500W• Frequency Response: 24Hz - 500kHzThe sub can be run at either:Thanks. Pete91
What impedence is the sub at 500RMS? Essentially all you doing is matching the RMS at the same resistance (impedence) of the sub and amp. So what you've listed isn't really powerful enough to max the potential of the sub. Try find a mono amp that's rated to 500RMS at whatever impedence the sub is.
Tal
Sound mate cheers I've just found the Alpine MRP-M500 500w RMS @ 2ohm. Class D Mono block. £145 brand new. Good choice?
