hey all, basicly i went and had a road trip with my close mates and halft way out a really louid screaching noise came from the car. we jacked up the left front and spun the wheel. Really squeeqy noise came from it. Checked the breaks, the disk is quite worn (atleast a 1-2mm lip on outer radius of disk where pads havent been) form what ive seen (removed the trye when i got home) the pads are really thick still, cannot think what the suqeeking is. it gets louder when i go around right hand bends where theres more weight on it. Im guessing its the breaks but it could also be the bearings. any help any one?

By the way its a 2002 Lupo 1L

Thanks guys :)

i had a pug 306 that did that to, if it was a bearing u would hear a loud humm when u went faster, maybe cv joint,

Yeah i thought that too. It better not be the CV joint... how much / how hard to replace you think?

ITs really weird because when it first started and i breaked harder, it stopped, but in slower speeds it was doing it again and it ewas intermittent sound. surely it would be a contimuous wurrring sound like the bearing? the sound is intermittent and fudging anoying lol.

im a mechanic so im competant in repair myself, but i lack experience in this field. figures eh?

I had the same on my Lupo, i believe that the pads have a wear indicator that when they are too low a piece of metel on the pad scrapes the disc and creates a loud squeaking noise to let you know they need doing. I know that when i did the discs and pads it went away so must have something like that system.

Worth a shot.

Cheers, James.

All good mate, have a feel of the discs, if the far edges of the disc are 'lipped' (ridge on the edge), its probably time to change, but the pad depth idicators are going to be the ones squeaking i reckon.

As a member of the motor trade i recommend you change both the pads and the discs at the same time to ensure best braking durability and reliability.

hehe, sounded quite official then.....;)

Hope that helps!!!

Cheers, james.

Is the squeaking coming from the front or the back, did you change all the pads and discs or just the fronts??

its coming from front left, i changed the front pads and disks both sides. hoping its not going to be something expensive like the diff :(

How strange, without hearing it first hand, its hard to tell tbh, but your best bet will be to take it to a garage (VW specialist might help) and let them have a hear of it and might be able to solve the problem. Sorry i can't help further!!

Cheers, James.

im wondering if its the piston not retracting back into the hub, could be that, if its not going all the way back in surelly that will rub and make noise, so hard to say what it is without hearing it like s2000 says also, could also be a sticky hub, under the caliper bolts is platic shimms, if there not able to move it could be that to, just be carefull if u do remove caliper bolts as if there rusty like mine was it was an utter nightmare to remove, had to buy a multi spline removel socket, vw sell the new botls for 1.50. wish i could help u more,,,,,,,,,

also thinking its not a warped brake disc is it,

I was going to suggest that myself, especially with the recent very cold weather (eg.braking down a hill and hitting some ice cold slush or something to that effect) basically rapid cooling, but if the pads and discs are fairly new and it didn't solve the problem straight away then it may be one of the above faults.

Once again, sorry i can't help more!!!! :(

Cheers, James.

ok took it to my local garage (cant afford VW :( lol) all 4 of the mechanics said it was a CV noise, yet they checked my new CV and it was fine, and he is stumped! its been in and out over the past few days and he cant see anything!

hes advised me to get a new hub with knucles etc as he said eventhough it doesnt sound anything like the bearings, if he strips it down and there is 'something wrong in that area' it would be easier and save labour costs to slap in a new hub, but of corse sods law VW sell this in sections!! Grrr

anyone know where to get one of these for a GTI front left??

dj-jay - mentioned about the piston, but he said that wasnt the problem.

i hate process of elimination!! im quids down and have no fun driving my car atm!! :(
