dense blue smoke on acceleration

Hi

I have not long bought a very nice red lupo 1.4E 1999 with 100000 odd miles. I got it for cheap because the pedal box was broken and it sounded like a diesel. The new pedal box is in and I replaced the tappets so now it sounds better. I took it for an MOT and was gutted with the blue smoke on acceleration failure because i wouldn't have bought it if i saw it smoking. Anyway we want to sort it to keep it so any advice would be good. It's an AHW engine and it starts very quickly and has lots of power so I don't suspect a low compression but I see lots of problems posted for this engine. It gives a little blue smoke on startup but only sometimes and never much. I've followed my wife driving and a small amount of blue smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating. If the engine overruns like, say, going down a hill then the throttle is opened at the bottom the engine crackles and a big puff of blue smoke comes out the exhaust then settles down again to the small amount/none. I have cleaned out the breather and also tried it with the pipe not connected to the air filter housing to rule this out ; it still smokes. I did think about fitting new valve stem oil seals leaving the head on with sealey tool VS 160 at a cost of £50 to £60 but wondered if it was worth the gamble. I don't know what piston rings and big end bearings cost and although I could probably replace those myself at a push but I wouldn't be able to tell if the bores are worn. I've had vw's before and I wouldn't have expected engine wear like that at 100,000 miles. Maybe this engine had not had the oil changed for 80,000 miles before I bought it though. I don't know whether to try to fix this engine or get another one. This engine does go well though apart from the smoke.

most proberly valve guides not stem seals, common on this engine unfortunatly. quickest option new head.
