twisty b-road
The rattle on start up that sounds like a diseasel is (I'm told) normal on some VAG petrol engines, and is the pneumatic valvetrain requiring a few seconds to lubricate the valvetrain. The rattle gets worse as the engine loses oil. Is your engine oil topped up? I think you should start your engine with the clutch in anyway, at least that's what it says in the manual. jonnycv
Both my current gti and my old sport sound like diesels when first started up they soon go back to petrol sounding engines after a few miles. i understand this is normal for 16v VW engines. Mike de Rouffignac
If its any consolation my 16v does exactly the same on Startup, but found that keeping the Oil Level spot on reduces the problem. I found that if you allow the level to drop by a half Pint it increases the noise. Hope this helps.
