  1. Oh my... Advice (1) already sounded like a a-few-hundred-quid job. I asked my mechanic the other day about the rocker cover leak and he told me that it's a major job cus it involves heavy labour and stuff. He qouted me £150-£200 on that cover leak thing... let alone cambelt, tensioner and water pump change... And I did look up "Holts Piston seal" on the Internet... some say it's ok and some say it doesn't cure the problems but also kills your engine?! lupogirl
  2. There's nothing on the floor... It's only 8 yrs old and just runs 34k miles... I can't believe it's a piece of scrap now... And in reply to openrooflupo, I did check the oil on the next day I got home... Am I just doomed or what...? almost-giving-up lupogirl
  3. Hi folks, latest update... I had a four-day off last week and drove about 700 miles... and my lupo sucked 2 litres of engine oil!! I had the coolant temp sensor and the switch for radiator fan replaced (thought overheating was the reason), and I had new engine oil (Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40) put in and a new oil filter. At 300 miles, I'd already poured 1 litre of oil... at the beginning of my returning trip, I put in about 500cc of Castrol 15W-40 high mileage (couldn't find any better at the service station on M42)... Then drove on motorway for another 250 miles and got home... the oil was at the bottom end of the dipstick. Put in the remaining 15W-40 and the oil level was just over the bottom end of the normal level. Throughout the journey, temp sensor never read over 90C. I don't think broken rocker cover seal/gaskets could lose me that much oil, or could it? WHAT WAS WRONG?????? desperate lupogirl
  4. Now you got me... maybe it's simply an aging sign for lupo?? Mine didn't start rattling until 4 years old lupogirl
  5. I had the same thing before, in the rear left corner. What I did was - I asked a friend in the rear seat to figure out what it was while I was driving. As soon as he moved to the rear left seat... the rattling stopped. That's when I realised it was the backrest release lever and the backrest making the noise. So I simply took a piece of kitchen roll tissue and folded it several times so that it could fill the gap between the the lever and the backrest. And then the rattling was gone forever. Stupid but effective method~ style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> You might also want to check if it was the rear left seatbelt making the noise. Hope this helps~ lupogirl
  6. Thanks KrazyKve! Good to know 90C was fine. But today I came home (after driving for 25min @ 65mph + 5min @ 30mph), parked the car on the driveway and deliberately left the engine running for a couple of minutes. Still no signs of fan spinning. BTW, the temp gauge stayed about 90C throughout the journey. Was this still normal...? Cus I kinda hope this is the end to my lupo's hunger for engine oil since I've been suspecting that engine overheating was the reason. lupogirl
  7. I had the temp sensor replaced, engine oil and filter changed a couple of days ago. Now the temp gauge on the dash is reading some temperature!! Haven't seen the needle move in so long that I wonder whether it's reading normally... haha... Just after driving for 3 mins, it's reading about 90C and then it stays there all the time until I switch off the engine. Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but was 90C normal? And, also having had the radiator fan switch replaced (cus the mechanic said that's reason why the fan wasn't working), my radiator fan is still not spinning... Is it supposed to be on when the engine is running or when temp gauge/engine reaches certain temperature? (because I haven't seen my fan moving either in so long... ) Having driven 65mph for 20 minutes, no signs of moving fan... Then I lightly touched the grids on the radiator and it was hot but not scorching. Which indicated that hot coolant was nicely flowing to the radiator, did it? BTW, could overheating the engine result in the engine using excessive engine oil? Many thanks~ lupogirl xx
  8. Can anybody help me on this? After just a couple of minutes driving, temp gauge reads about 90C and stay there all the time. Don't know if this is the normal temp... And the radiator fan seems to be never on... Is it supposed to be on when the engine is running or when the temp gauge/engine reaches certain temperature? Many thanks, lupogirl
  9. Thanks, everyone, for answering my questions. I brough the car back to the garage and they drained the excessive oil out. BUT, they topped it up with semi-synthetic 10-40w to get to the correct oil level. I had them put in Castrol Edge Sport 0-40w... I presume these two can mix fine? lupogirl...
  10. Oh no... it looks like I'll have to tuck the car in for the night... let's say, if I bring it back to the garage and they empty the oil... can I pour it back and re-use the oil that's just drained? After the oil change, the car ran less than a mile. So, throwing away brand new Castrol costing 40 quid is like killing me... Many thanks again... heartbroken lupogirl...
  11. Hi, I had my engine oil changed today but when I came back home and checked the oil level on the dipstick. Oh my god!! The oil level was way over the max mark. The garage must've poured the whole 4 litres of oil in!! There wasn't any smoke coming out of exhaust when I was driving home - maybe cus it was a very short trip (less than half a mile). I need to pick up someone tonight, should I continue to drive the car - even though it's just a 5 mile journey? Or should I bring it back to the garage first thing next morning? I'm kinda thinking of drain some oil out myself - but don't know quite how to do it and where the drain plug is. Can anyone help, please??? Many many thanks~ lupogirl
  12. Wow! BIG THANKS to lupogtiboy!! I had the wrong sensor exchanged at the local vw and fitted the correct one. Now the temp gauge on the dash is reading some temperature!! Haven't seen the needle move in so long that I wonder whether it's reading normally... haha... Today was quite warm, 19C, and my lupo was parked under the sun, although it did rain a bit. Just after driving for 3 mins, it's reading about 90C?! Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but was it normal? And, another question is, does the coolant temp sensor also determine when the radiator fan is on? If yes, does anyone know at what temp or when the fan would be switched on? (because I haven't seen my fan moving either in so long... style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> ) BTW, could overheating the engine result in the engine using excessive engine oil? Many thanks~ lupogirl xx
  13. Hi, I went to the local vw and bought a coolant temp sensor and the seal. Then I brought them to a local garage to have old one replaced. But I was told by the garage that it's a wrong one?!?! The one on my lupo has a square green plastic head (don't know what that bit is called) while the one I bought from vw is just like the one showed here: How To: Coolant Temp Sensor Replacement, 1.4tdi where the green plastic head has one sqaure side and a oval side. So the one I bought can't fit. What's going on here?? I showed the part number part number 059 919 501A to the vw mechanic, the sensor also has the same part number on it. Why was I told it's a wrong one? BTW, my car is a T reg lupo, 1.4 16v Many thanks, lupogirl
  14. Hi guys, I finally bought the coolant temperature sensor and the seal at my local vw. I was trying to change it myself but it'd already taken the crap out of me just to remove the engine cover. Anyway, after removing the engine cover, I noticed that there's quite a lot of oil on the spark plug area. This picture was taken after the engine cover was removed. border="0" class="linked-image" /> border="0" class="linked-image" /> Now that, in this picture you can see a lot of oily stuff on the engine side wall and wiring case. Is A in this pic the coolant temperature sensor? (Wanted to make sure before I do anything stupid) And I noticed a weird thing (B in the pic) which looked like a socket to some kind of plug and the plug went missing. Is this what B is supposed to look like and what is it by the way? border="0" class="linked-image" /> border="0" class="linked-image" /> Finally, you can see the oil running down to the lower part of the engine. border="0" class="linked-image" /> border="0" class="linked-image" /> But there's no oil on the ground. Is the oily stuff the engine oil? If it is, can it be burnt off when the engine is hot? I'm suspecting these are the reasons that my lupo uses so much oil and yet there's no oil leaking beneath the engine nor nothing on the ground. I wonder if the oily stuff also damaged the temp sensor somehow. Many thanks, lupogirl
  15. If I'd like to have it changed at a local garage, providing my own brake fluid (i.e. buy it at a local vw), how much brake fluid should I buy? The brake fluid comes in 1-litre containers. Thanks, lupogirl
