When we bought the car from a used car dealer there were no funny noises and the light came on twice on the way home, so we decided to be better safe than sorry and booked it in at our local VW specialist, he went over the car with a fine toothed comb and found that the big end bearing were ruined, that the engine would last like another week before it wouldn't work at all.

My car needs a new engine, the big end bearings are gubbed, raging doesn't describe how I feel

Thanks for the advice guys and gals, I'm hoping that it was just a fluke with the electrics, but I'm getting it checked out tomorrow, so we'll wait and see.

Hi, I just bought a 1.4 Lupo today and was driving it home quite the thing and the oil warning light flashed on, so I stopped the car, switched everything off, got out and checked the oil and there was plenty in it. So I continued driving, and it flashed on again, so I repeated and it was fine, so I continued driving again, but not going above 2k revs this time, and it was perfectly fine, the car doesn't make any strange sounds while driving, has anyone head of this before? Should I be worried?
