  1. My GTI has gradually got worse at eating through the inside of the front tyres and they now last about 500 miles. The last tyre fitter blamed the front wishbone rear bushes.

So now I've finally got some time with a friendly local garage and they're a bit stumped so far. Says all bushes look alright but the tracking is way out. Both front wheels massively pointing outwards and doesn't see how he's got enough thread on the track rods to dial it out enough.

One thing he mentioned was he thinks GTIs have different ball joints or rod ends which are longer and someone might have put the wrong ones on in the past? Anyone heard of this?

To me, the camber looks off too. The front wheels look to be sloping in towards the top. But not sure if that's normal?

  2. Hey all. Really confused by what's happened here. I'm trying to repair my indicators and was taking the airbag off but left it balanced without disconnecting. It fell and pulled the connector apart. Doesn't look like it's damaged the airbag but I've no idea what this red wire is. It was just about attached to one of the 2 pins on the connecting ribbon cable but has now fallen off. Any ideas? 20180715_123157.thumb.jpg.ebd5cff590cb23e8a331ce582cc6f8e5.jpg20180715_123201.thumb.jpg.02762718c6163d49bc6b3fd18fad079c.jpg

The easy way is to check you chassis number. If it had a w in it then yes it would be wolfsberg. Red I is a indicator to this too. Not sure on the last question

My logbook shows the car as a VW 1600 fastback. But the emissions is correct and the registered date etc. and some systems (e.g. ECP) bring the correct vehicle type up. I just always assumed it was a weirdness of being imported by VW dealers.

Yes, there's a snail on your wishbone.

You need to be in there prying for excess movement with a bar tbh, unless it is really shagged we cant tell much from pics.

    So there is! :-)

I'll get the garage to give it a good going over. I'm getting them to put a new cam belt on anyway as I don't fancy it myself.

  5. Not sure whether to jump on this thread or make a new one.

I've got knocks from the front and mad inside tyre wear. But the bushes all look OK to me. I've bought some front wishbone rear bushes, got the lemforders but my local garage said they don't last long and to get the powerflex so swapped them.

Anyway I've taken loads of photos. Can anyone see anything wrong?

  6. Resurrecting an old thread.

Still haven't got around to doing this stuff, now with 123k on it :o

Well, I paid to have the clutch done and had some new tyres when the last ones were showing thread on the inside but perfect on the outside. The fitter reckoned it was wishbones as they allow the wheel to move when accelerating, wearing the inside of the tyre. Sound reasonable?

  7. Hope this is OK to go in here.

I've had a Lupo GTI 52 in raven blue for about 5 years now. It's done 120k but only about 10k from us so does about 2k a year from the wife driving it to the train station and back daily.

When we bought it we were told it's very rare because it was a demonstrator with every option bar the MP3 HDD unit. It's got leather, aircon, 6-speed, cup holders, electric windows. Not sure what else isn't standard.

It's 100% original with only the tyres being changed and a new clutch a year ago. I'm about to do the 2nd cambelt change.

Just gone through an MOT with no advisaries. Bodywork is great for the age but has a few scratches here and there when looking closely.

We can't appreciate this car like it seems enthusiasts do. And it's a shame it just gets driven to the station and parked there every day, so we were thinking of selling it and getting the wife something a bit more mundane.

Does anyone have any idea where I should pitch it in price?

  8. Glad I found other people with this problem. It suddenly happened to me too.

I had the clutch changed and it's been since then. I'll be steering round a corner with the steering as tight as expected, or tighter like it's tramlining a bit, and then suddenly it'll go very loose as if I've lost the front end. Every time it happens it scares me because I think I've hit a patch of oil or something, but if I steer more I haven't lost it, it carries on around the corner.

The tyres are crap anyway so I'll be changing them but as it suddenly came on I don't reckon it'll be from that. I'll have a look at the bushes at the weekend if that's what others turned out to be.

  9. My raven blue GTI is described as a VW 1600 fastback on the V5.

Odd though that some insurance companies see the reg as a Polo GTI, some as a Lupo GTI and some as a fastback.

That said, the rest of the information on the V5 is correct for the Lupo GTI, e.g. emissions figure so it must be the right reg and vehicle.

  10. Never been a lover of Raven; I must be the only one, but this looks really good.

Need that 35mm (at least) drop though.

    Enjoy!

Hopefully those Bilstein springs you recommended will sort that right out.

    dream car, dream spec.

ruin it, mess with it, kill the originality and I will find you. . . .

I promise it will look no different apart from the little drop that everyone agrees should have been there from the start :)

I intend to keep this car forever. Or as close as I can. Problem is it costs a lot of money in tax just to sit there and do about a thousand miles a year. While people with cars which do 50,000 miles a year but pump out 99g/km CO2 pay nothing.

Where are all these ravens appearing from?!

Looks awesome with the leather interior, car looks clean!

HDR+ on the phone helps :) but it's a good job I didn't take the photos any closer. There's a couple of slightly dodgy bits.

  11. That looks good cheers. I'm starting to realise that coilovers perhaps aren't what I'm looking for. That Bilstein kit looks nice but ouch on the price. I suppose it's a car worth doing right though.

I'd budgeted < £1000 to get it spruced up. The clutch and cam belt kit are about £200 of that. After £600 of suspension, it doesn't leave much room for an exhaust or other service items.

Perhaps I should just replace the bushes / wishbones and leave the suspension for when a component actually fails?

  12. Hi all.

My 2002 GTi is needing a few bits replaced I think as it's getting a bit tired in a few places. If anyone can advise on good parts or places to pick these things up or anything else I should be doing that'd be great thanks. It's done 111k

New clutch - new one coming from luk. Does it need the master cylinder replacing or is that only if it's failed?

Cambelt - new full kit with water pump coming from luk. Standard job to change? Any special tools?

Suspension - few bumps and rattles so I'm thinking may as well change all shocks and springs. Not bothered about lowering but if it's the same cost to get some coilies or decent kits then may as well. Any other bushes etc I should do?

Exhaust - prob needs a new exhaust. Held on by brackets at the moment. Any good aftermarket ones that look the part? Or is custom built the way to go?

Leads + plugs. Any other engine bits normally need replacing e.g. distributor, fuel filter etc?

I'll spend a day doing it myself once I've got the bits and post pics on here. Can't wait :-)

  13. Bump on this.

I was fiddling under the seat in my GTI because the driver's seat won't heat up and since then the airbag light is on. Do the Lupo GTIs with leather have side seat airbags?

Also, can you reset via OBD or does it have to be VAG-COM? I've got an OBD bluetooth thing that I work with my phone.
