  1. Dont know about cams/VVT, but as far as Im aware its there for emissions rather than power.

Is it still on standard suspension?

It definitely helps the engine maintain the power higher up the rev range. I've seen graphs with/without VVT and it definitely helps.

    With regards to chassis mods:

    AP coilovers

    Uprated A.R.B

    G60 brakes

ALl brand new geniune VW bushes

    Bridgestone Pilots all round

It really is a sorted little car, just needs a bit more OOOMPH! Lol

Although, i'm travelling 150 miles to work, so i need to maintain reliability/economy, so that rules out bodies/carbs.

  2. Theres only 2 bolts that hold it in.

Its on the front of the gearbox on the right hand side of the engine bay as you look at it.

Remove the 2 13mm nuts (top one holds main power cable, bottom one holds a bracket).

Then unplug the black plug from the starter (its the signal wire).

Now undo the 2 big bolts that hold the starter on (16mm maybe?).

You have to do the bottom bolt from underneath im afraid.

And to get out the top bolt you have to wiggle the gear linkage around in order for it to clear it, cus the bolts are about 4-5" long.

  3. Do you make lots of short journeys, meaning the car rarely gets up to full temp?

Get it up to temperature and give it an "Italian tune-up"! In other words, thrash it for a bit.

The mayonnaise is basically water vapour in the oil that condenses and forms the sludge. When the engine gets very hot this vapour dissapears, hence no worrying substances under the oil cap.

  4. Well my old nova redtop was running 45 webers, which gave a huge hike in power and torque, but i returned 10-15mpg, which was crippling!

However, i am led to believe bike carbs are more economical and not quite as rawcus as webers and can even be so smooth that its hard tell its not standard!

Throttle bodies is out of the question! I'm not spending £2k plus for an extra 20-30bhp?

Some cams would probably next on the agenda then? What would you recommend for the GTI? And will it still maintain the VVT?

  5. I was less than impressed with my GTI's performance, so i decided to try and make it a bit a quicker.

So far i have done the following:

    Lightened flywheel

    Ashley 4-1 manifold

    Decat

    Pipercross panel filter

    Uprated air intake

    Lightweight wheels

I feel that i now have a good basis for some proper engine work, as all of the above mods really didnt do a fat lot in terms of performance.

Would the next logical step be head work, or maybe cams?

I have thought about bike carbs too! :)

  6. Im taking the gearbox off the GTI tomorrow and just wondered if theres anything to look out for?

I assume its just a normal clutch change, no need to drop the engine or anything?

    Wheels off

    Driveshaft nuts off

    Bottom ball joint out

    Pull hub off shafts

    Shafts out

    Unbolt gearbox

I'm also getting my flywheel machined to lighten it. Anyone else had a go at that?

  7. I know I'm not wrong, I used to have one lol.

Could have a look at a supersprint backbox, they are available as just a box, the purports are a 2 piece sleeved system. Can get hold of them sub 150 used tho .

My old VTS used to have the Superspirnt 2" race back box from Kam racing. Sounded great, and not disimilar to the pugsport.

I think the raspy rally sound will suit the GTI tbh.
