  1. Hi Blackrat... Pedal travel is maybe an inch or two or more before anything sharp starts to happen.... Personally I would expect more from the GTi just because the company cars ive had in the last 3 years (bog std saloons) have had far better brakes than what is quite a quick hot hatch... I have since been told that vw / audi have brakes like that were the pedal travels a bit before much happens, unlike nissan/renault where as soon as you move the pedal 1cm the brakes work well...
  2. Hi mate, yes those little screws went back in style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
  3. Hi Loopy, No mate, never brought any grooved brakes for any car !! I usually spend any cash on motorbikes ! Its the wifes car and its always totally standard, apart from the brakes now !! I didnt actually notice the markings on the box but I think it turns out they are on the correct way round style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
  4. I dont think i'll try some original pads then !!!!! Will see how the ebc's go. Only done about 100 miles, was just concerned with the loud humming noise that got louder the more you braked from say 70ish down to stop for a roundabout. Just thought that since they are a few months old they'd already have been bedded in etc..
  5. Cool, cheers mate.. atleast I have them on the right way !! I might get some brand new pads then to see if they make a difference.. are the pads I need still the same as my original ones for a lupo gti ? i.e same size
  6. Which way round should they go ? I have this disc in the below link on the passenger side ..... http://business.netcom.co.uk/eav/images/Gdisc1.gif
  7. Hi Mate Its had fluid changes (well been charged for it) the 3 times we've had it serviced since we've had it and the brakes have always been sh'te style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I didnt know grooved discs made that sort of noise.. Its quite loud inside the car !!
  8. Hiya Had our GTi now for over 3years and the brakes have always felt a bit wooly compared to my company car (nissan primera style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" /> ). Got the car when it had done 20k miles and now done 50 odd thousand. About a year after we got it I brought some new pads but they made no difference to the braking. I dont drive it much and the wife doesnt complain but when I drive it they really do seem rubbish. Have to push the pedal really far before anything happens - my company car brakes as soon as you move the pedal a cm and so does any other car ive driven recently. I just brought some s/hand EBC grooved discs and greenstuff pads off this site. They are 280mm and came with new caliper carriers. Apparently only a few months old - they look ok and the discs have the faintest lip on them so should be ok I'd have thought. Fitted them this morning with the help of a friend. Expected a big difference but really they dont feel any better atall... Im really confused and this is doing my head in now ! With the new brakes, when braking from 80ish to a stop - not emergency stop but fairly hard - there is a loud humming noise that gets louder until you come to a stop. This noise is the noise i'd associate with brake fade but they dont feel like they are fading as you still stop. Can anyone shed any light on what could be wrong or what I can try please ? Just doesnt seem right that the peddle moves so far before the brakes work and why the replacement EBC discs and pads have made little or no difference. Thanks James
  9. Been and brought some brake pads for my GTi and cant find a jack anywhere in the car ! Surely it should come with one ???
  10. Has anyone had a problem with their lupo ? On ours the drivers door handle doesnt work all the time. You can pull it fully out but the door doesnt open no matter how hard you pull. Let it back in again and then give it a harder tug and the door opens. Passenger door will open no matter how slow you pull the handle, the door just pops open. Need to take it too the dealer when I get time really but wandered it anyone had come across this before and could tell me what was wrong. Thanks James
  11. Since owning our lupo GTi i've noticed that sometimes from cold starts when idling on the driveway there is a slight rattle that comes and goes until the engine has been running for 5mins or so. I took the car too our local dealership 2 times where they had the car over night to hear the cold start noise. Both times they said they can hear the noise but cant see anything wrong and only way to maybe cure it was to fit a new gearbox but they wouldnt do that unless it actually breaks because VW wouldnt replenish the cost as nothing wrong with the car in their eyes... Anyway I got bored of trying to sort it out with VW cust service as they only act on what the dealer has diagnosed. In January I took the car for a service to another dealership who seemed more competant. I told them about the noise and they said they'd need the car over night for a cold start the next day. Yesterday I got round to booking it in and spoke to the service manager. As soon as I told him what the fault was he straight away said "This is a problem mainly on lupo's and polo's, when the engine is cold there is an aggetation of the main shaft into the box that causes a vibration of the 1st motion shaft (which is the noise in question) and the noise should go away when the clutch is pressed" He was 100% correct. He said he is 99% sure that will be the problem without seeing the car but I was welcome to book it in and himself and his senior technician will check it over. He also added there is nothing to be concerned about and not really anything they can do as a new box could do the same and could be ages changing boxes until they find one that doesnt rattle when cold. Just wondered if you all have 2mins next time you start your car in the morning when the engine is stone cold. Start it up and let it idle, stand infront of the car and listen to see if you get a noise (similiar to a chain rattle), mine isnt constant, just every `10-20secs` or so until warm. If you open the bonnet the noise comes from the right hand side of the engine bay towards the front where the gear selector arm is.. Thanks in advance peeps... style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
  12. Hi, how easy is it to fit new pads on a GTi ?? Ive fitted them on my motorbikes before but wondered if you need any special tools to do the job on the Lupo ? Someone said about a tool that winds the pistons back into the caliper to allow a bigger gap for the new (and obviously thicker) pads... Thanks in advance...
  13. Anyone got EBC Greenstuff pads ?? Our GTi possibly needs new pads (done 27k, the missus drives it so doesnt get a hard life!) and these are an option. The car is in for its 3rd service on Tuesday and I think they are gonna tell me it needs new pads but I have a feeling the VW price for supply and fit might be a bit high !!
