  1. I like the way you think none of us are a aware of this. Dealers are a nightmare. 95% are like this, nothing new!

I think the original poster is just alerting people to the poor, sorry, awful service you might get from a main dealer. Having been a VW enthusiast for 30 years, I agree that some dealers are awful, however some are outstanding. VW in the UK are probably much better now than they used to be, can you imagine how bad they were in the eighties!

  2. This is an outstanding Jazz Blue VW Lupo TDI sport with 98,000 miles on the clock. It has a long MOT and only costs £30 per year to tax.. It has all its keys including the lightweight plastic one. This car has its original handbook which includes most of the service history. This car is unmodified and still has its original VW Radio and CD multichanger. It has recently had a new cam belt and water pump fitted by VW. Looking for around £2600

  3. Hello boy's and girl's.

I'm from Romania, and ai want to buy a VW LUPO 1.2 TDI.

In our contry "3L" is rare , so is hard to get an opinion about this type of engine.

So , i would like know what i have watch look carefully when i buy one, and something about gearbox.

    THANKS.

    Excuse my bad english.

    Hi,

Lupo 3L's are even rarer in the UK. I think the 'problem' with the 3L is the gearbox. its a very complex unit and any kind of problem could cost you a great deal of money.

    Good luck.

    Martin

  4. Thanks to the community of Club Lupo I was able to fairly quickly diagnose a warning light issue on my ex’s SDI. Urgent email earlier in the day asked if I knew why one of the warning lights might be flashing? When she arrived it was clearly the glow plug warning light but why was it flashing? A few minutes on here helped me with the diagnosis. Turned out that the brake lights have given up. So thanks everyone, again Club Lupo comes to the rescue.

PS – the Loop mentioned above is a car that I have driven half way across Europe and back on several occasions and covered 25,000 miles in it in less than two years. However I haven’t driven it for over a year but I gave it a test drive to make sure all was OK. All was fine but what really surprised me was the difference between the SDI and the TDI I currently have. My current daily driver is a Volvo C30 and it has spoilt me a lot and I had forgotten just how basic the SDI is. Don’t get me wrong, the SDI is a great car but the TDI is so much more and I am not just talking about performance. The TDI is smoother, despite being a triple; has much, much more low down grunt, I had forgotten just how much you need to rev the SDI. And that’s all before you realise how much better specified most TDI’s are compared to SDI’s. It sort of makes sense of the big difference in the price of these cars when they were new, from memory, when new the TDI cost 20-25% more than an SDI. I suppose, as always, you get what you pay for.

  5. This is like a Dutch auction....

This is a great car but I really don’t need it as I already have an air-cooled Beetle and a Diesel C30 Volvo. Maybe I should sell one of those instead?

  6. Hi, is it normal for the lupo 1.7 sdi to vibrate a lot on tickover, as soon as i rev it, it is smooth.

    thanks

Some good advice so far. I ran an SDI for about 25,000 miles and it did tend to vibrate at tick over. This was more noticeable when cold and in cold weather, tended to be smoother on tick over in warmer weather. It normally smoothed out a lot once under way. Its ‘sweet spot’ under load was just under 3000 rpm.

  7. I am at two ends of a stick here, got a budget of what Im wanting to spend on a car/insurance. On being cheap to run, other just dam fun ;)

Been looking at a Volvo C30 1.6d r-design, nice high spec car which is cheap to run. But other car went and test drove a new Skoda Fabia VRS 1.4 tsi 180bhp which was just mindblowing fast for what it is. Turns out the VRS is 700quid cheaper to insure (crazy)at same price as the C30. Tho being dam quick and petrol, will cost a lot to run and may loose my license.

Is speed worth it? What you guys go for? I still in college in uni soon sooo what will be best...

As a Lupo owner who also has a C30 and rates Skoda’s highly, I appreciate your dilemma. Not driven the VRS but two close friends have and by all accounts ‘bloody amazing’ just about sums it up. However one loved the gearbox whilst the other hated it and felt that ultimately it compromised the car for him. He was considering chopping his Focus ST in for the VRS but the gearbox put him off.

The C30 is a different animal but is an amazingly capable car, especially if you do a lot of miles, in some ways it’s a true grand tourer. Went round Europe last summer and had the choice of my C30 or the other half’s S2000. At the end of the trip we were both relived we went in the Volvo, the Honda would have been painful and that’s ignoring its hideous thirst for fuel. Have done a few 600+ mile trips in a day in mine and I felt fine at the end of it. The 1.6D is brisk but not quick, having said that it has loads of oomph at 85+mph and last summer was happy to cruise at 100mph (at a whisker over 3000rpm) on the autobahns. It’s worth adding that at that speed it would still have been very happy to pull much higher speeds but I was trying to be considerate to an engine that only had 10,000 miles on the clock. Diesels do take a long time to bed in. Mine is the drive variant of the 1.6D and has averaged 58mpg over 20,000 miles.

In terms of build quality there is not much in it, they are both well thought out and well screwed together vehicles. The C30 does cost more to insure (quite mad really) but is cheap to tax.

To sum up, speed and thrills = VRS; long distance, comfort and lower fuel costs = C30.

  10. Lupo TDI for sale

Now I have a little more time I can update the details for my Lupo TDI.

I am a massive fan of the Lupo, espically the diesel ones. If Volvo hadn’t made me an offer I couldn’t refuse on a drive C30, I would still be using a Lupo as a daily driver. When my current partner wanted a more practical and economical second car, of course I said get a Lupo Diesel. She was a bit sniffy, she drives one of those Honda S2000 things but my enthusiasm and determination won her over or so I thought.

After much searching and effort I came up with a really nice original TDI. The only negative is it needs a cam belt change. No problem with that so I buy the car. It has 98,000 miles on the clock and service history to back this up. It looks much better than a car with this mileage would normally look and drives very well. The engine pulls like a train and due to the relative lightness of the 75 hp Lupo at 975 kg, it feels as brisk as my 109 hp C30 which weighs in at 1300 kg. It has an MOT and is taxed but that is only £30 a year anyway.

However, my other half has had a change of heart. She has seen the new Fabia VRS and has fallen in love with the green one! This has resulted in a decision to swap the not very practical but super quick Honda for a fairly practical and nearly as quick Fabia. This leaves us with an unwanted TDI. So if you are looking for a good Lupo TDI for under £3000, please get in touch. I know that the cam belt issue might put some people off so I am prepared to negotiate on that.
