  2. For sale are a set of 4 BBS RV205 in 7x16 ET35, 4x100.  These would suit MK2 golf or lupo/arosa/polo etc with stretched tyres.  Whilst in very good condition they would require a refurb to make mint.  I have tried to capture all marks as best as possible but I would recommend viewing.  They come with 205 45 16” tyres, two have minimal use, one has about 3-4mm left, the other looks like Duncan Goodhew.

Collection preferred from Bognor Regis, West Sussex, courier at your own expense.

Looking for offers around £325 as these do not come up for sale that often in this fitment.

I have a friend looking for some G60 steels so could deal against a set of those or alternatively 7&8" D90s

  3. For sale is a 2000 Polo 1.4 Se 16v (AUA engine – 75bhp) five door in white. Recently offered to me by a friend who had bought his girlfriend a new car. He offered it as spares or repair but having had a look around it it is far from ready to be a scrapper. That being said, it is not a new car. Every panel seems to have damage or marks on it, the interior could also do with a good valet.

At the moment the drivers door handle has been removed as it has suffered from the typical lock failure, a replacement lock repair kit has been ordered and should hopefully be here in the next couple of days. The drivers side electric window does not work on the switch, another common fault, one that I‘ve not had chance to investigate due to the ongoing bad weather. The central locking isn’t working but I am assuming that this is related to the door lock issue.

Short MOT, due 10th January. I know that two of the tyres are borderline so these will need changing of legal wheels put on for the test..

The car starts, stops and drives fine, no abnormal noises, no warning symbols are showing. The mileage on the clock is showing at 87,400, I have no reason to disbelieve this. It comes with the service book but this is only stamped up to 20k. It also comes with the V5, two keys and also a JVC CD player.

The car is located in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, any inspection welcome – please note though that the car is currently on a sorn so cannot be driven on the public highway.

First £235 gets it. Failing that I’ll put a years ticket on it and keep it for myself as I believe the roadtax to be £12 a month.

  4. I have for sale a 2002 (52 plate) Lupo 1.4 16v S in Reflex Silver. Current mileage is 56,400 and this will increase slightly as I am still using it. The MOT is valid until July the 30th 2016 and the tax whilst not transferable is a modest £12.60 a month.

The car has three registered keepers, the second being my brother in law who in turn sold it on to a very good friend of mine.

I took this car as a non-runner in exchange for a MK4 Golf Turbo that I had for sale about four months ago. The Lupo developed a slight misfire around two years ago when owned by my brother in law. The car was taken to two independent VW specialists, neither of whom could diagnose the issue. The second specialist suspected that a ring had gone as compression was down on cylinder no 1. They proceeded to remove the head only to find that there wasn’t an issue with any of the rings/pistons. The labour bill started to mount up so the decision was made to recover the car back to his parents and there it sat in the garage for the best part of two years.

Fast forward to early 2015 and the inlaws decided that they wanted their garage back so the car had to go. Along came my friend who decided that he wanted to have a project, a deal was struck and the car was moved to its new home. Before the issue of the non-running engine was addressed he proceeded to drop the car on brand new FK AK Streets and treated it to a set of 7x15 BBS RZ with new 165 50 Bridgestones added up front. Since owning it I have also put a pair of matching 165 50 Bridgestones on the rear as the 195 45’s were scuffed where contact had been made with the rear arches.

With the knowledge that the compression was low on cylinder 1 I decided to strip the head down and rebuild it, this was done over the course of a few evenings. The valves were all cleaned up and relapped in. I spent the following few weekends putting everything back together with new gaskets all round - the resulting compression test showed 13.8 on cylinders 1 and 2, 14 on 3 and 4 – happy days. The engine was finally fired up but was still suffering from a slight misfire. Plenty more head-scratching was done, everything that could be cleaned out was cleaned out, throttle body reset, injector cleaning etc etc. Still the slight misfire remained. I was just about to give up on the thing when said friend came round and suggested that we go round everything once again just to make sure that I hadn’t missed anything. Two cans of carb cleaner later and the fault was found, injector seals in no’s 3 and 4 were not seating properly and were letting air in. With a full set of new injector seals fitted the engine was finally running as it should be bar the tappets. These are still noisy at certain revs due to not being replaced in the correct order. I am hoping that in time these will quieten down although a replacement set is around £70.

The car was put straight in for an MOT and it flew through (55,856), the emissions were spot on even after doing only 7 miles since the rebuild. The brakes were a little unresponsive to start with as the car had been sat for such a long time - these were stripped down, cleaned and regreased and are now working as they should.

Before the car was taken off of the road it had new discs and pads fitted. The pedal box was repaired as it suffered from the usual issue that these cars suffer with. The cam-belt and all tensioners / water pump were also replaced. I have since added another new cambelt for peace of mind.

Since rebuilding the engine I have covered 550 miles to ensure that everything is working correctly - I would not feel comfortable selling a car with known issues that were not disclosed. In those 600 miles the only thing to fail was the oil pressure switch which decided to cover the gearbox with a nice non-rust coating, this has since been cleaned up and the switch replaced.

The car is in stunning condition for its age, suffering from only one minor pin dent on the offside front wing and a small scuff to the front bumper as can be seen.

The car is offered for sale in various forms. As shown with either the 16” Steels and virtually new 165 40s with hubcentric rear spacers or the BBS RZ with new 165 50 Bridgestones the price is £1,395.

You can also have the car with a set of standard BBS RMs for £1,495 but these will need rebuilding so you will have to bring your own wheels to get the car home.

The car is also available on original suspension and wheels, two of which have brand new hankooks for £1,100

Whilst the car still suffers from noisy tappets I believe that the prices shown are fair for the age, condition and spec of the car.

Any inspection welcome. - Location, Bognor Regis - West Sussex - 07786 317952 (please text before calling as I don't answer unknown numbers)

  5. Pretty sure Sealey make a timing tool you could get.

I imagine if it's a tooth off, it'll be lumpy as hell, like borderline undrivable?

Can't drive it yet as it's been off of the road, not brave enough to put it in for an mot as it is as it's bound to fail on emissions. It is quite lumpy though, it's struggling at 750 rpm to stay alive, I was hoping that the throttle body reset would take it nearer 950rpm on tickover but it didn't do a thing. The bit that baffles me (and this may be me being new to this) is that if you take the oil cap off when it is running it cuts out after about 4 or 5 seconds. Never had a car do that to me yet.

  6. Why they cut through the old belt baffles me, unless it was a time and therefore cost saving exercise. The cambelt had only been changed a couple of months before so my guess is that they were going to use the old markings if there was something obvious found elsewhere.

Plugs and coilpacks have been changed for items known to work. Scan brings back nothing. My thought process at the moment is that maybe I am a tooth out on the cambelt but I won't get chance to check that until the weekend now. Unfortunately VCDS doesn't have measuring blocks for the cam/pulley positioning on this engine (as far as I am aware). I will get some footage (if I can work out how to upload it) later.

I haven't given up just yet, just wanted to get an idea of possible cost effective alternatives if push come to shove.

  7. Righto, where to start. My brother in law owned a 1.4 16v S a couple of year ago. He had the cambelt done at a reputable garage, a month later it started to have a very feint misfire. It went back to the garage that done the cambelt, they couldn't find the issue. It was then taken to another reputable VW garage who cut through the old cambelt took the head off and then gave him the call that they didn't know what was wrong with it other than the compression was down on one cylinder. A £400 bill and a car with it's head off and a box of spare parts later and the decision was made to garage it until such time he would have a go at trying to find the source of the problem himself..

Some 18 months later and the car still sat exactly how it was laid up the olds decided that they wanted their garage back and the car became mine.

So the last few weekends have been spent rebuilding the head, cleaning the throttle body out, replacing the coilpacks/plugs etc. Compression now is 13.6 on both cyl 1& 2, 14 on both 3 and 4 yet still I have a really lumpy tickover. I am starting to get to the point where my patience is running a little thin so I just wanted to get some input from the experts as to what you would do. I don't really want to scrap the car as it is super clean but then I can't really sell it in it's current condition either. I would love to 20vt it but I have other toys that I would rather spend my money on.

Is there another more reliable engine that I could take from another model and drop straight in with minimal hassle? The current engine code is BBY so the issues may not come as a surprise to some of you.

  8. Pretty new to this so please bear with me. I have ended up buying my brother in laws old Lupo 1.4 16v BBY engine code. Car has done only 52k, presumably short journeys. The car started to develop a slight misfire on tickover and was taken to two 'reputable' VW gurus, neither of whom could diagnose the problem. With nothing to lose I have started to strip the engine and have found that the car is overfuelling, exhaust valves were really black as was the throttle body. There is a receipt for a throttle body reset a while back but when you see the 'before' pictures I question how that was done.

    20150627_091447_zpslosftv5w.jpg

    20150627_092609_zpsyxqx2pdh.jpg

I have now cleaned all the valves up, cleaned the head and relapped the vales back in.

I have also cleaned the throttle body up but you can now see daylight.

    20150701_194754_zpsi6b8wgjx.jpg

    20150701_194802_zpsxayw6gjy.jpg

Now my question is, when off of the car should this flap be shut and airtight? Logic makes me want to say yes, Logic wants me to think that this is part or all of the problem!

Over to you guys now, you are the experts.

  9. Advertising a 2002 (52 plate) 2 owner Lupo 1.4 16v S.

The car has 52k on the clock and is in fantastic condition both internally and externally but it has been laid up for around 18 months. The car originally developed a misfire which we assumed was due to a faulty coil-pack. All four were replaced and switched around but the car still had a lumpy idle and continued to misfire.

The car was then taken to two local reputable VW specialists, neither of whom could diagnose the fault. The cylinder head was removed and inspected by the second of these specialists but there was no sign of mechanical failure. The thought then turned to electrical but by that stage and a hefty nigh on £400 bill later time was called on the car and it was pulled back to its current resting place.

The garage now needs to be cleared so the car has to go. Ideal donor if you have a spare 1.4 16v engine kicking around or if you fancy installing something a little more lairy.

Shortly before the misfire developed two new tyres were fitted, new brakes were also fitted up front. Cambelt and tensioners were done (although cambelt has since been cut) and a new pedal box was fitted.

I can get photos for potential buyers but please note that it is a standard reflex silver lupo 1.4 16v, no coilovers, no alloys, but bog old standard granny kart.

The head is still split from the engine although rested on top. Any inspection welcome.

The car will need to be collected from Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

Offers in the region of £700 seems reasonable given the condition of the car and the resale value if you have a spare engine ready to drop in.
