What are the tell tail signs of a failing pedal box? I'm a complete novice when it comes to anything mechanical

Hey guys, been lurking on here for a while now, checking out people's cars while saving what I can for my own, now Xmas is over and I got some money of the fam I think I've finally got enough to get my first car.

My budget is only £1000 so I'm wondering what I can expect for my money, I don't mind owning either a 1L or 1.4

What should I look out for when buying a lupo (common faults etc) and is there anything I should avoid?

im only from retford so pretty much next door to you, planning on buying a lupo in the next couple of weeks/months, just waiting for the right one to pop up at the right price - im pretty picky haha
