Good luck with fitting that what a major job
Remove the inlet manifold and wedge back to the bulkhead
unbolt water housing from the side of the head
Pull out thelong water pipe under the inlet manifold
Remove starter
Then you should be able to see the sensor (you will need a ball end allen key)

The water Temperature sensor could be faulty and also will cause rough running and the appearance of water in the oil. i had the same thing on mine.

Thankyou.

Engine bay cleaned and oe air box back on, just need the air pipe to the box

as you can see the water pipe needs to be removed along with the starter.

Right ive just got back on the Arosa after finishing the race car and found the fault with the starting, the crank sensor wire has been cut clean off (well almost just a small rubber section holding it on ) at the gearbox end i'll try to get a photo tomorrow.
Yep comfirmed the sensor was broken, the sensor removed looked old so cant see it was ever replaced, from what i can see the sensors sit at a funny angle and if not installed correctly the wire will rub on the inner edge of the flywheel.
If anyone wants to atempt this job you need to.........
Disconect the battery..
remove the inlet manifold / push as far back to the bulk head as you can
Unbolt the EGR metal pipe
Unbolt the coolant housing on the side of the head
Remove the plastic water pipe running behind the block
Unbolt the starter and move back slightly
then you will be able to remove the sensor.
Refit then clear all fault codes with Vagcom...

A faulty sensor will throw the ecu in to confusion and cause rough running, poor starting in the mornings because its telling the ecu its warm when its not, your car will smoke/ burn oil and fuel and cause a form of condensation in the oil giving a mayonaise type of appearancee under the cap and the gauge will still read correct
have you tried the latex glove test? a simple test to see if there are hydrocarbons in the water. remove the expansion cap and stetch a latex glove over the hole if the glove expands then the tank is pressurising.
Does it overheat?
Trust me just try this £15 part before you strip the engine
