Ahhh my GTI is crap so I'm going to swap it for a TDi as I want to fit a tow bar and pull a mobile home over the highlands.
Does it have enough power for that?

I was reinforcing the point about being anal. The gap between the wipers is too big: the drivers side should be a 21" and the passenger side 19" and also not so close to the A pillar. Martin knows the correct part numbers (VW have the wrong one in their system for the passenger side for some reason).

An SDI with a straight through exhaust doesn't sound like have a V6 though.

The wipers are wrong but you probably got them from VW so it's their fault. Next time ask for a passenger side wiper from a MK4 Golf.

I've changed the filter 4 times now. The last time was the worst because the screws are starting to rust and I didn't have ramps or a jack. Not fun.

If you buy a filter from VW then it fits properly. I bought a MANN one for the TDI last time (MANN stuff normally is the same as oem VW), and had the same problem as you describe.

Yeah you're right. TDIs are the best.
You love the TDI

I think I used all of the original mounts when I fitted mine too

Wow, 98/100, I'd be really proud of that if I was you! I hope yu told him your exhaust was all new and original too :). You should have won!

Glad you've enjoyed it! I've seen it a couple of times up your way since I sold it. Hmm..... As tempting as it is (and one day I'm sure I'll regret it), I don't live in the UK any more so the steering wheel would be on the wrong side for me.
Good luck with the sale. Free bump for an awesome car!

It's funny because I remember when I sold it to you, you said you'd offer it back to me. I always wondered if you remembered saying that!
I bought another one in the mean time as I missed it, although it wasn't as good as this one. I just sold it a couple of weeks ago.
Has it been a reliable car?

The TDI belt is grooved on both sides if the car has air conditioning, like yours and mine do.

Extremely cheap motoring apart from the road tax

In my opinion the 1.4 TDI is the best, next after that would be the 1.4 75bhp but just don't buy a rough one (there are/were lots of those out there so plenty of choice).
I had a 1.4 75bhp as my first car and it was more than fast enough to be honest!

1st set of problems: Electric
On the ride home and the next few days I started noticing small things: Driver's seat heating worked intermitently, driver's door passenger window opener also didn't work all the time, rear wiper button on the stalk not working (though wiper itself worked), blinker stalk a bit faulty, driver's door open not activating interior light and and the Gamma CD changer unit LEDs not lighting up with headlights on (though unit works).
Small things, I thought, till I brought it (innocently and lazily) to the VW dealership right in front of where I live. Long story short, they said all the cables in the driver’s side door sill were in really bad condition, as if there had been a continuous water leak into the area god knows from where. They recommended against replacing the whole loom because of insane costs in the thousands and no guarantee that another problem would appear somewehere else. So they just repaired some individual cables… not exactly sure for what, because the door lock, seat heating and window problem are still present.
Indicator stalk intermittent: contacts wear out, just replace the stalk
Drivers door not activating interior light: will be dry joints in the lock mechanism, dismantle and re-solder
CD changer lights: you might just need an illumination loom, pull the CD changer out and have a look if one is fitted http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=113637&page=2
Window problem: could just need a new switch
Drivers seat heating: I'd swap the roller switches over and if the problem still persists I'd probably look to replace the heating mat (or at least remove the seat covers and look to see if it

I wondered if the owner was on here. I haven't got this month's VW driver buy in their monthly email they did say it was 'superb'!
About time they featured some other GTI's apart from the Golf!

How long was it driven for with that gaping hole in the airbox for?

similar high spec cars though.
I'm surprised there were so many with air con. There are 3 on ebay now that have it!

Strangely quiet in here

lupo se wheels.
they may be from a polo but they were on a lupo first
Even before they were on a golf cab?

Well, it's disappointing to find your engine in that state! It's interesting to see such detailed photos. What are you going to do about it?

Looks very nice! Any inside pictures?

Try searching ebay for 'fox to iso adaptor',once you have iso standard plugs you will find adaptors to suit your radio
I think canbus is a networking protocol so devices in your car can talk to each other, ie colum controls to radio or immobiliser to instument cluster, I dont think they are used to provide the basic power
Canbus doesn't provide the power, but it does let the radio know when the ignition is on or off!

What are the other minor differences? The all-silver GTI badges front and back?
