  1. If the lacquer is running you're putting too much at a time on, get your spray technique right and it shouldn't. Besides, with lacquer you want a few coats on anyway, no point trying to smother it in one go -which usually results in the aforementioned running.

Those halogen heaters (pick one up at B&Q) are a godsend if you're wanting paint/lacquer to dry quicker, most bodyshops use them to speed up the process.

  2. Yeah, that's the ideal thing. Not in a rush at the moment as the other car I have available to drive is a MK4 GTTDI, but it would be nice!

And yes, I think my restrictors would be a bit full of gunk now, they had a clean when I first got him (that and the air intake box was full of crap too), but 30k on no doubt they're up to the eyes again. But good to know it helps towards the remap.

Any preliminary results on MPG yet?

  3. On the subject of the remap, have you had the intake restrictiors out? I haven't gotten around to that, but I wonder if that would improve the remap potential or not. That coupled with a decent Air Filter (like my K&N) and possibly a stainless steel straight through exhaust, I wonder how far you could push it to near the stock TDI hp/torque, it would certainly take it past the 3L.

I'm certainly thinking about it now since you've had the remap, and if it does improve the MPG (which would be the main reason for me), then it would pay for itself pretty quickly to be honest. I can't see me ever selling my Lupo (unless I do happen upon a Fantasia TDI) anytime soon, especially as i'm in the £30 tax bracket. And it would tide me over until I get up the gumption to turbo the SDI/drop a pd130/150 in.

  4. Yeah, that remap sounds nifty, it's never going to be a racer, but that extra bit pull -even just for hills, the SDI's nemesis! and for overtaking -and not having to rely a bit too much on momentum would be worthwhile. Will like to to know the resultant MPG figures, as I was a wary about a N/A engine being remapped and losing MPG because of the extra fuel supposedly being used. Something that is usually negated with a Turbo assisted engine, with the Turbo doing the leg work. But if the remap does give that bit more torque and increases the MPG, then it's win win.

Pretty good now if it has the same torque output as the 3L mind.

  5. Yeah, this looked mint yesterday, even in the stop/start showers. Well deserved place in the top 10, love the wheels.

Surprised there was no Club Lupo stand this year, still plenty about though -Dubascrub's stand was almost all Lupos anyway!

  6. Ah well, if you can get them that cheap!

As for the K&N, I probably wouldn't say it makes any difference to the MPG (never really noticed one way or the other), but it does make the car that little bit more nippy. Certainly pulls quicker than when I got it. Can't really remember life before it now though, as it's been in 3 of the 4 years i've now had the Lupo!

And like I say, you just get the cleaning kit to give it the once over every 6 months. You basically clean the crap off (not much to be honest) and reapply the filter with the special oil.

  7. The K&N air filter is pretty good for the SDI, plus you can that stuff so you can renew it after a while instead of chucking it out. And are VW Oil filters for the Loop that much more than budget ones? Fuel filter seems a bit more pricey mind. Although getting them from Dale negates that point.

Also (probably been over this before), when you replace the fuel filter, are you filling it with Diesel before you put it in? It can be done without, but I prefer to fill it for ease of mind -as well as getting it to turn over again afterwards. No bubbles with that method from the get go.

  8. Well if you do get around to doing it before me (more than likely!), please do a build thread! Do the VAG family variable vane 1.9 tdi's have the same similar engine codes as the MK4? would make it cheaper sourcing a similar set up for sure.

And yeah, most Fantasia green loops I seen knocking around are either 1litre Es or SDI S'! Think i've only ever seen one TDI in the colour -and as much as I tried, the owner wouldn't part with it!

  9. Turbo'ing the SDI is a real option: http://forums.clublu...showtopic=90792 -not as said as simple as slapping a turbo on, but a small bit of work and a piggyback ECU and it can be done.

As for quickness, the only problem I find with my SDI, is that if you don't gauge a steep incline properly, you'll crawl up it (which is where the turbo would be useful). Apart from that, it's quite a nippy motor even if it is a non-turbo diesel, especially at 0-40mph. Most of the time at lights people seem to look surprised when you wheel away from them without trying. And it's also great for cruising at motorway speeds, even at 90mph+ the rev gauge doesn't go past 3000rpm -it'll never scream like a 1litre.

  10. I was sort of expecting that, thanks for the detailed response though.

Had i gotten the 3L bumper (it was in my colour too! sob.) i would've gone down the modifying of the bumper route no doubt, seems a lot of work to fit the 3L wings -even more than actually sourcing them! -when cutting the excess off the bumper and then repairing the paintwork seems the simpler route that rewards a great result.

the Votex grills are nice too, although they're pretty hard to come by too! Wonder if I can take a standard grill and modify it to look something like a 3L/Polo blue motion look. Or just wait it out for another 3L bumper to turn up...

    Cheers.

  11. I'm sure there used to be a thread with the answer to this, but I can't find it now, but here goes: Apart from the obvious with the relocated indicators, does the 3L grill fit the standard grill space? ETKA and ELSAWin don't really give out dimensions, and from the odd time looking at 3Ls/Lupos with the 3L front (mainly drooling over Mitch's awesome car), I can't really gauge it.

I can guess it's not a straight fit seeing as the standard grill curves towards the bottom and the 3L doesn't. But can anything be done to make it fit -and does it go with the standard housing fixes? Just wondering as I recently missed out on a 3L front, and although that would be the better option, I've never really seen a halfway point between the two -ie. the grill in place of the standard. But if it's a no goer, i take it that's because of incompatibility between the two. Never really seen any other aftermarket ones that address the issue either.

  12. ZX-Rowen, that's great. Looks from the photos like an incredibly neat install! A lot of room freed up by removing the SDI air intake.

So it would only take the turbo (nice and tidy down the back there), intake manifold (quite a bit shortened by the looks of it), and an altered downpipe off the standard MK4 TDI? No messing with any intercooler (just use what's already there)? And a just an aftermarket ECU to piggyback? Certainly doable. In terms of the donor parts, are you totally restricted to the earlier 90bhp? Just as the later standard mk4 TDIs had a bhp increase (I think 110bhp).

Fattasss, that's also a nice install (and definitely worth considering!) in terms of power/weight ratio have you had any remapping done either to increase speed or increase mpg? I only ask as missus' 110 GTTDI shifts quite a bit and still averages 55mpg, and i'm guessing your PD lump wouldn't need nearly as much grunt to shift the much lighter Lupo body, and could still have a lot of speed/torque while being really frugal?

  13. No that's normal haha

    Seriously

Anyway, 80mph is like 2900 rpm in mine. 60 is 2k and 70 is like 2300

Yeah, really low revs on the SDI. The Golf GTTDI is a bit more normal, but on the SDI it usually just sits between 1000 & 2500 whatever you're doing.

  14. Going off that guy from Holland (If i remember correctly), I would love to see somebody else try the manifold swap from the MK4 golf standard 90bhp TDI here. It's nice knowing it can be done fairly easy since the top end of the SDI and that TDI are just about a perfect fit (i think), but It would be great to see a build thread.

If i had the time and money, i would tinker on with a spare engine to see if it worked before taking the plunge.

  15. Yeah, my SDI usually holds between 55-65ish mpg on everyday tootling around the place, depends on how I drive (usually an average of 62.5mpg).

And 70+ on the motorway, as the rev counter never goes past 3000rpm, even if my foot's welded to the floor.

  16. Yeah, I don't bother with removing the fluid cap, you can usually push the piston back by hand -just give your brakes a pump when you first turn the car over afterwards so they bite properly.

Once you've got your wheels off, all you need for changing the 239mm discs, is the aforementioned Allen key -I use a torx ratchet tool as the caliper sliding bolts are sometimes a little stiff (put copper grease on these if they haven't already when putting back on) and a phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that keeps the brake disc in place. Maybe that and a rubber mallet if the caliper is a little stiff and refuses to budge off the carrier/hub. Oh and some elbow grease.

It's also easier to remove the bolts if you have the car on full lock on for each side, that way the caliper is facing more or less outwards.
