Yes mate.

Got a Haynes Engine managment book that Clifford pointed out to me at an air cooled show a few weeks back.

Got the internet, and a couple of guys are doing me huge favours and giving me advice.

If you have to learn, you may as well learn on something exciting.

Gonna be tough, but I just keep playing the MEPG Nova 1.0 TBs through the system at home, and can imagen how cool it will sound.

I belive 210bhp is possable from the 1600 on TBs.

Im sure that what hes running?

Andi

You know we were talking about the throttle bodies the other night on the phone, well I did some more investigations of what pipes will need re-routing on my car when removing the inlet manifold and have this question (for all reading here really).

I am currently working towards a throttle body conversion but unlike Andi I am going down the road of "direct to head" bodies to avoid any issues of inlet manifold port spacing as the bodies I am after are singles so they just bolt up to the head.

Obviously individual bodies require a bit more effort in linking the throttle but that is a separate issue.

What I am a bit stuck with is what to do with the vacuum hose for the servo if I have no inlet manifold? Surely you dont just tap into 1 body for a vacuum as then this body would become unbalanced with the other 3? Wondered about running with no servo assistance but then this will probably ****** up my ABS.

tap all four bodies then smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

you will need another vacuum pipe for the charcoal canister.

the problem with direct to head throttles is that the port isnt round. its an oval shape, so unless the throttle bodies you gonna get are also oval (i dont think ive ever seena set ?) then you not going to have a good port match.

with doing tigs' manifold, i propose a spacer plated between the throttles and head (30mm - 40mm alu) , not an actual manifold, but with this spacer i can get the ports perfectly matched with no bumps or uneven ports. but it will take a few hours with the die grinder, but im sure andi wont mind doing that biggrin.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> going to try get some drawings done this week some time

My mate was having a look through the GTi forums and stumbled across this, which I thought may be interesting for you to read Andi.

I'm not convinced it's not a bit of scare-mongering to be honest, cos plenty of people seem to have used bike TB's with no complaints, but I thought it worth showing you. At least those with more knowledge on the subject than me can tell you what they think.

Think it's a bang-on conversion though, and can't believe you're being so brave. Gonna be well worth the effort matey.

Great find Steve.

Although I realised once I started Id already read it when I was talking about useing Bike boddies.

It was this thread that stopped me wanting to.

Still now I understand it a little more, its been much more a enjoyable read smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Its a bit slow tbh mate.

Every little job seems to give me a problem.

I wish Id put the car up on ramps before taking the wheels off.

Just for the zaust and drive shafts.

I just just squeeze my hand down through the brake lines to get to the the bolts.

But then Ive got no leverage!!!! ARrrrr!!! Bloody cars!

TBH Ive only caught the odd hour or so as Im trying to get as much as I can done on the house before the kid is here.

Saying that, someone is able to borrow me an engien lift in 3 weeks, so I need to get the driveshafts out by then!

Well my new coilover inserts have arrived and I rebuilt them into the struts last Thursday so the car is useable again. 95mm and no driveshaft mod required...will explain when I see you biggrin.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Will come over when the engine lift arrives as I think it will be 2 man job (well certainly easier with 2 of us) lifting the old lump out. Will work around you mate as you have more on than I do...only thing forecoming is a trackday at Donnington is a few weeks if my mates 180+bhp MK2 Golf is ready.

Ok guys bit of an update.

I know Im cheating here, and Im letting myself down, but Ive desided to get someone in to get this engine out.

the reason being, I need to get to the stage to start on the throtttle cable, and I cant do this till the engine is out of the way.

Im just finisnhing up the kitchen, and have a list of 100 things that need doing, so cant see me having any spare time to get this done.

Finding it really hard to do, with my limitted knowlage and tools.

The guy who did me the chassis mod, is sending one of his lads around to the house tommorrow, to do it.

Talked him into £11 an hour so Im hopeing Emma doesn't mind when I tell her tonight.

He says it'll only take him a couple of hours, and to say Ive spent maybe 9 hours to get where I am, its gonna be money well spent.

May as well concentrate on the jobs I will be able to do instead ofpissing myself off attempting the bigger jobs.

Just need to get some over time in to pay for it.

Saying that, my gaffa said he'll give me £20 for the engine and box, so it may pay for its self.

I wish doing it was as enjoyable as reading it mate!

Told Emma I was getting someone in to do the removal, still got my balls located where they should be, and she even suggested getting him to put the new one in.

Think it'll be more fun when I have the boddies sat on my desk at work to keep me going biggrin.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Tis ok mate.

It wouldnt be so bad if I knew how diffrent parts were removed.

Things instructions dont tell you were getting me stuck.

I only found out at that Leeds show that the bolts holding the drive shafts in, should be cracked off, and not wound off.

But if the offer is there when it comes to the tricky bits when the parts arrive, could do with a hand then smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Gonna take the pully off to try and get a boss made up for the trigger wheel.

Found a dude who said he could build me one for a few beers and the materials.

Id called Bill about a DTA as I thought useing the cam shaft sensor, may have made the extra price worth while, but he says it still may need a new sensor so desided against it.

Trigger wheel and Mega squirt is still the way to go.

Missing the car like you dont belive.

Wanna get it done this year really.

Dont wanna be working in the rain when the winter arrives.

its easy getting the engine out its putting it back in tongue.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> make sure u label everything before you take it out

why dont you invest the money it would cost to take it out on a nice tool set

i got one from halfords life time garentee and its lasted me years already i did snap a bit and just took it back and swapped it smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I bought myself a full spanner set, as I didnt have a bag for them, so grabbing the size I wanted was a bit of a nightmare.

no matter how many tools I have, useing them doesnt get any easier! biggrin.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Went to see Clifford today, and had a look at the throttle boddies.

they look so sexy in the flesh, still smileing thinking about them biggrin.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Seen the design for the spacer plae, and was showed how it will all work, so has helped alot.

Can picture exactly what I need to be doing now.

Hoping to have the Alu needed next week, so we'll be able to get cracked on.

Made a stupid bet with Ross today, that the car will start by the 31st of September surprise.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":surprise:" border="0" alt="surprise.gif" />

Just the sensors that are worrying me really.

Oh that, and looking in the inside of Cliffords ECU huh.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

Not too sure on this now Ross sad.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
