yeah it's pretty common. I don't know if it affects all diesel VW, I'm sure I read somewhere lots of the PD engines don't have it.

I think heat is what kills it. I've heard of them failing in just a few years in America so 15 is pretty good really. Best thing you can do though is buy one and keep it with your toolkit in your boot. I had all the required tools in my boot to do it so no need to get the big toolkit out.

Will probably buy a new one during the Chrismas holidays, when I go back to Spain.

What kind of tools do you need? Being a relay I would've thought that pulling the old one out and getting the new one in would be enough

You just need a star driver to get the two screws holding the fuse box out.

But yeah. Your hand will be shredded by the end.

I might be undertaking a real cool (lame, pointless, but reasons) mod soon. I will keep this one under wraps, but if I'm right, we may see a few TDI, SDI users going for it :P

Keeping quiet for now though, shush ;)

Trust me, it could be very much a marmite mod, but if I've called it right, it could go down a treat ;)

Oem headlights making a temporary return. There's something I want to finish off. No surprise, the light output is dreadful.

There's something a little depressing about going from a better output headlight to the OEM ones... It makes everything all dull and dreary

the biggest issue is the light output. They simply don't light up the road enough. I imagine halogen bulbs in projectors would focus the light better improving visibility but none the less, the output is horrific. It's definitely the fact they're reflector lights though, they scatter the light too much.

Split second mistake, boom. Luckily we've agreed not to pursue insurance as the damage to his was minimal so i'll be lucky. The damage to mine, not so minimal.

I'm tempted drop the front bumper off and just see if I can straighten it up. I might be able to tap the dents out of the wing and then DIY budget job it. Would prefer to ezfix than go to a shop. 163k miles say so.

Edit: Luckily my projector headlights weren't installed either. Had to remove them the other day due to the bulbs blowing and me having no spares at the time.

Ouch! I'll lend a hand should you need it

Cheers Matt. I'll see if I can get some time this weekend to have a look. Right now i'm driving it as is which is kind of crap. Proper eye sore. It looks as though the bumper has pushed back under the wing so perhaps if I can drop it I can re-seat it then the rest I can just ezfix. It'll never be perfect but it's just not worth throwing money away on a car with 163k miles on that's not worth anything. If it was a GTI or something then perhaps..... but it's not.

I've just skimmed through this whole thread, really nice car and some great work being done! It looks like you've really bonded with her, although I suppose it would be hard not to given the kind of millage you're doing :)

Also, didn't realise you'd had a bump, bad times :(

Now where have I heard super tractor used before? ;)

You? I stole it. Great term.

Maybe it's just the noise but I'm convinced it's pulling away ever so slightly quicker. The back box is pretty restrictive having looked closely at it, so it's possible.

My whole system is looking decidedly ropey FWIW.

I might well opt to pay one of the local exhaust specialists to fab up a quiet stainless catback replacement on the basis I'd expect it to be not much more than a couple of hundred quid  given the tiny size and should last forever... My thoughts are that if an aftermarket system from the likes of Klarius/Bosal only lasts a couple of years and comes in at just under £100 and I have to fit it myself or pay someone else £50 or so to do it then it represents a false economy? (Furious 'man maths' at work here ;))

You can get a really budget OEM system for about £60 but they're cheap and won't last long. A full stainless system was just not what I was willing to spend. The backbox on mine has looked rough for a while. I decided rather than allow it to blow I would take it out and then not worry, so I've used a straight stainless steel pipe for that. The rest of the piping on my exhaust is okay. I've patched up a single hole using an old method that I love to rely on ;)
