oilman, my Lupo is a 1999 SDI. It came with no significant service history as the previous owner had been doing it themselves for the last few years so I'm not totally sure when the oil in the gearbox was changed, so I'm thinking I should do it sometime this year. The gearbox does feel nice, so I don't know if that's a sign of a recent change or is it simply not possible to tell? it doesn't grind unless I'm careless.

To help us to give the most accurate advice possible we do need some information about your car. e.g.
Make: VW
Model: Lupo SDI Diesel
Year: 1999
Manual/Auto: Manual
Performance Modifications: None.
Driving style: (road / off-road / track etc.) Road use, some motorway, mainly distance driving through countryside with short town centre intervals.
Any other information that may be relevant: Gearbox feels nice, doesn't crunch, and I have no problems slipping into any of the gears.
What recommendation are you looking for? Gearbox oil.
Also, do you recommend that I change the oil entirely or that I leave some old oil in. I read somewhere that you should always leave a bit of the old oil in, but that just seems wrong ?
