spy
Hi all,I am thinking of getting the gearbox oil on my new (to me) Lupo GTi. I don't expect it had been changed in its life and would prefer to make sure it has a refresh. What is the recommended (or better) gearbox oil for the 6 speed box ?Thx

Rich
Remember the boxes on these require a somewhat specialist tool to drain/fill.
lupoluke
Should only need a 17mm hex key, or a wheel bolt with flats grinded on the threads with some mole grips.

Rich
Not on a loop no, what's different. You shouldn't comment on things you don't understand, you add nothing just complicating things as things need explaining further.
lupoluke
Your right I hope my incompetence doesn't make the moon and the sun collide and cause the end of the world. But seeing as tho I have complicated things I have took it up on my self to explain things further, you need a M16 security spline socket for a gti, the 17mm hex key is for 085 type boxes. Much love. spy
Is it recommended to change the gearbox oil. A VW specialist told me there is no need to change as the gearbox oil is in there for the life of the car.I know on other cars where the manufacturer says this, enthusiasts recommend to change it.My car has 85k miles - what is the general recommendation on here ? Defcon5
I'd always change it. Usually do it when I first buy a car
jon_273
I usually change mine when I buy a car too. I change the oil in my TDi every 40K.Saying it's in there for the life of the car reminds me of something else: that cambelts last the lifetime of the engine. This is because when the cambelt snaps, the life of the engine is over!
spy
My thoughts exactly. I can't see how any oil can last the life of the car. I will get it changed. Other than the right oil, what else will I need eg gaskets etc ?
