Gearbox Reliability ?

 Share

Recommended Posts

In looking through the classifieds, I have noticed that there are a fair few cars advertised with a replacement or refurb gearbox. Most of the cars seem to be on around 100k miles and spread across both 5 speed and 6 speed boxes.

I would have thought that a VW gearbox would last more than 100k miles.

Is this a common issue and one I should budget for if the car is still on its original gearbox ?

My GTI is on 152k and is a bit noisy but changes gear just fine. I think a lot is how the car is treated.

The 085 gearboxes in non-gti lupos are a known weakness on all cars that use them!

Yes, I am referring to GTIs currently for sale. About 10-20% say they have had a replacement or refurb gearbox
