Defcon5
If there was no coolant in the expansion tank it has a leakWhen was the waterpump last changed?

GTIChris
Did you make sure there was no air lock when you refilled the tank ?
Defcon5
I'm guessing he didn't do it himself Chris, so won't have checked. You are right though, could be an airlock if its recently been drained
bg02gar
ive not checked to see if its air locked, how do i go about this? cheers
GTIChris
Take the cap off the header tank and repeatedly squeeze the pipes to the rad. You're basically trying to make it 'burp' any air out of the system.
bg02gar
ok thats been done

GTIChris
Did you have the engine running when you did it and therefore the water pump ?

bg02gar
can leave the car running, within 15 minutes of stand still I'm over heating.
LR5V
You would give Florence nightingale a run for her money nursing that issue for 6 years!
Rich
Does it do it on a run? If not, fans.
mk2
Ok, here we go... (I'm assuming good head gasket, normal fuel mixture, ok brakes, ok cat and normal ign timing. is there coolant in the system? does the water pump run ok and circulate coolant? does the thermostat open and keep the temp gauge at 90 without moving once warmed up and driving normally? Is the right thermostat fitted... do the fan(s) work? does the interior heating work? does the coolant level stay constant (no leak or crack somewhere)? does coolant circulate through the radiator (can you feel warm fluid leaving the rad through the hose, when engine is hot?) Sausage
Do the hoses get hard? Is overheating on the gauge or is it actually boiling the water (you can hear it) and chucking steam out the expansion tank? It sounded like an airlock from the water pump change but that shouldnt still be the issue all this time later if it has had some use. Fans should kick in regardless, if they dont then sort that out first. The sensor might be in air and they dont kick in if still got air in it. Rich
Also, take the cap off, rev the engine and look for increases in flow with rpm, tests water pump.
LR5V
Mine was air locked and when it cleared it guzzled down at least 3 liters - probably more than 4 - of coolant, that was on top of what I thought was a reasonable amount. from the initial fill.
