GTI 6sp not able to get 1st

Recommended Posts

Hello people, time for me to get some advice, I've search through the g/box thread and found someone who had the exact same issue as me, however no mention of what the root cause of the problem was mentioned, here's his description, I'll paraphrase it.

Basically when pulling away in first today, as i went to put it into 2nd it ground and then went in (clutch depressed correctly-its done this a few times now) as mentioned its done this a couple times before and once its done that its been almost impossible to put it into 1st or 2nd. In the past ive used a bit of force to get it in and then it sort of works itself loose and its fine again. There is no whining, gears have never ever slipped, never ever popped out, there is no problem at all getting it into any of the other gears they slot in lovely. Anyway it happened today and it will go into second fine but it is having none of 1st at all, even with "considerable blood boiling violent force" it wont go in at all so im guessing its totally not aligned anymore????

I've contacted the member but am yet to hear from them but it seems as though parts were just chucked at it by a dealer willy-nilly, I'd prefer it if I could find the issue instead of just putting parts on and hoping for the best. Anyone else had this problem and got to the bottom of it??

Pete

Apparently not, heis trying to suss it out ATM I believe. It's a weird one. The stick makes a clicking noise when you try to engage. Had the box apart and I don't think the gear was stripped.

My stick is kinda like a dick in a top hat at the mo, all over the shop, I'm wondering if the mechanisms on the outer shell of the box are worn. You can push as hard as you like to get first and nothing, even with engine on, clutch released, pushing for 1st has no effect, it feels like how I imagine it would do for someone with a 5 speed box trying to put it into 6th. The other gears are sweet as a nut tho!!

Cheers Chris, yeah I saw that thread but as he can still get the gear after double clutching I took that out of the equation as I'm convinced that he wouldn't have an issue selecting 1st with the engine off, so it's more than likely down to a possible clutch fault/release bearing/air in the clutch fluid. I have a spare knackered gti g/box to play about with to see if I can get my head around the issue, but i'm not the best with gearboxes so will have to rely on 2nd gear for the next couple of days!

The code is on the box.

The video is there.

If I linked you to it then I would be showing favouritism.

You could be a pikey and just loosen off the bowden catch cables, put the toewr to neutral, wiggle the L shaped black bit till it locks it then go to the selector inside the car, bang a 6 or 5 mm allen key in it and then clip the catch cables back into place and unlock the L shape thing and remove the allen key.

Cheers joe, yeah I looked at that one in the end even tho it was for a different code box, the code for the box was slap bang under the slave cylinder, how many different types of 02t boxes were made? As I have another sat in my garage which seems to be exactly the same as the one I have on the lupo.

Either way, nothing wrong with the cables, checked gear selection on the turret and 1st is a no go, was wondering if I can remove the turret from the spare box and try it on the one fitted? Not had a vw box to bits before.....

You're getting minimal sarcasm. Appreciate.

Yes, you can remove the tower, you need to use an 8mm spline, there's two bolts and then break the seal a bit and yank it out, then when you look into the box you'll see the three (I think) selector forks. You need to check if they're broken as they can be known to snap.

You can use any 02T six speed box, you can use a five but that's just bad times.

You are a little super star, I thought the 5 speed had a different bell-housing/bolt arrangement. I'm assuming I can't remove the selectors without splitting the box?

You can't remove the forks internally but the selector will come out with the box in situ should you wish to check.

The five and six are exactly the same bar a little difference on the casing near the passenger side wheel.

plus... rich might have a good point with selector forks. Forgot to mention in the text pete that when i rang a gearbox specialist he said forks are the most common issue on these boxes. Usually the cheapest fix too.

You can do it!
