Scottscotland
negative pressure helpWhen I say negative pressure, there is enough vacuum in the crankcase to make it difficult to remove the oil fill cap while the engine is idling (if i remove the dip stick it sucks like a hover),the car has smoke or steam coming out the exhaust ,i have just fitted the engine over the weekend and its a 2002 polo 1.0 mpi engine anyone any idear what the problem may be ? im going to do a compretion test tomorrow to see if its a blown head gasket but there is no water in the oil and i dont think it loseing any water(My mate is a rac and I phoned him and he had never heard if it before ?) Pete
I've never heard of this, usually the crankcase pressurises and spits the dipstick out of the tube, let us no what readings you get from your ct, also, not ideal to remove your filler cap while the engine is running anyways, but you no that already. Could be a blocked breather fault I guess but still not familiar with a real bad vacuum being caused.
Defcon5
Does it also suck thorugh the crankcase breather on the airbox
Scottscotland
It try's to suck through the crank case breather through the airbox but it can't as it has a a one way air valve in the air box
Scottscotland
If I remove the breather pipe on the airbox it sucks like a hover

Pete
Was the engine full of oil when you got it?
Scottscotland
Yes it had oil in it ( I replaced the sump as it was dented )the car burns around 1/2L of oil in 1 hr running I'm going to remove and clean all hoses tomorrow
Pete
Just thinking it was probably laid on its side before you got it so the oil could've travel into the head.
Scottscotland
ran it for 1HR thinking it would clear to find out its burnt about 1/2 L FROM THE ENGINE I PUT ANOTHER 1/2 IN IT AND RAN IT FOR ANOTHER 1hr IT LOST ANOTHER 1/2 L
Pete
If its losing oil that fast it should be literally pissing out the exhaust.

JoeA
Surely must be a blocked breather?
Scottscotland
i am missing this pipe can anyone tell me where it goes ?
JoeA
Thats the egr breather, goes from that port there to the right hand side of the airbox, right near the where crankcase breather plumbs in
Scottscotland
here ?
Defcon5
It doesn't attach to anything, it just sucks air in, it's fine without
JoeA
It connects to a port on the airbox/ engine cover.
Defcon5
Really? I couldn't find anywhere for it to go! Could you be a bit more specific - pre/post throttle body?
JoeA
Basically you have a breather pipe coming from the rocker cover that goes ino the engine cover/ air box. Then about an inch away from where that goes in the egr breather goes on. I don't think it'll solve your issues though but yeah , the right hand side of the engine cover there's two ports. Pete
Could do with someone with the same engine to do a comparison check, I'd pm a few members if I were you, the title of your thread may put off quite a few members looking who aren't mechanically minded, all you need them to do is put their hand over their filler hole.
