James_VW
I have a polo 6n2 TDI same gearbox as Lupo TDI (correct me if I'm wrong) The counterweight is very wobbly in all directions. It is tightened adequately. I'm assuming it could be either of 2 things 1. The counterweight it self is stripped 2. The shift tower is stripped Is the tower it self easy to remove? Remove the cables etc then the 3 bolts and the tower just lifts up? nothing going to fall out or anything I need to be wary of? Could you get me price of tower that I need? Believe gearbox code is EXB
Rich
you need to learn about the wahey tower bearing theory. alternatively google audi a2 gearbox weight and you will learn lots.
James_VW
so... I take it is an 02J shifter and is not actually the shaft that is stripped, but shifter tower bushings degrading allowing the play. So, either find replacement part or mess about removing bearings which people say can be a pain.
Rich
i once used a section of hose to replace the bearing. it's honestly not as hard as it sounds, just a broken plastic shell bearing.

Believe gearbox code is EXB Its a slightly different set-up on the TDI, parts as follows: Shift Tower (number 8 in the pic) is 02R 301 230 M - £162.42 inc vat Selector Housing (number 1 in the pic) - 02J 301 231 B - £111.54 inc vat Supposedly both in stock at VW On the 2nd pic, assuming yours in an AMF, the weight (49 in the pic) is 6X0 711 051 C - £43.12 inc vat, also allegedly in stock at VW
Rich
the weight will only seem wobbly because the plastic bearing in the tower has broken.
James_VW
Update on this for anyone else with TDI issues. It wasn't the bearing inside the shift tower but the counterweight. Nothing was stripped it was just loose but couldn't be tightened anymore by the nut. So I just put a washer between the nut and counterweight. You have to make sure the washer fits over the spindle so when the nut is tightened it pushes force on the counterweight. Gear changes are much smoother and when in gear the gear stick in the cabin doesn't shake. It seems to be a common fault as a lupo TDI around me also had the issue and now is resolved with the same method.
