djkylej Posted December 24, 2011 Report Share Posted December 24, 2011 I've recently bought an '06 plate fox for my wife.Unfortunately the remote central locking does not work. We hoped it would just be the batteries but no joy there. We've tried re-synching the key fob as per the manual but nothing happens, and I've even bought a replacement fob from ebay but that doesn't work either.The central locking works with the key though, so I've no reason to suspect there's a problem with the locks or solenoids.That leads me to suspect the convenience unit is faulty. I can get a used replacement for under a hundred quid, but was hoping somebody can help me.......1) Where is the convenience unit? Is it in the dash or under the seats as per othe VW's? How easy is it to access?2) Will a replacement unit need "mated" to the car by a dealer, or is it a straight replacement? is it simply a case of synching the key to the new unit?Thanks in advance! I got a new fob from VW (£40) and tried to pair it as per the manual but it didn't work. I then bought the under dash unit (just to right of pedals) - VW wanted £300 but I got a tested unit from ebay for £30 but no joy. I have just seen a listing for another unit (5Z0959433M - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-FOX-WINDOW-CONVENIENCE-CONTROL-UNIT-5Z0-959-433-M-/400225111474?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d2f468db2) but I have not idea where it is located - any info would be gratefully received!If you manage to solve it please post back. I believe it is located either under the bonnet or behind the dash just below the windscreen on the passenger side.I haven't tried it yet but that's my job for next week.What is the unit you bought next to the pedals? Is it an aerial/reciever or something?I've also got to repair the boot lock mechanism, gonna be a busy day.............. but I'll let you know how I get on. tim0409 Posted January 4, 2012 Report Share Posted January 4, 2012 HiThe part I purchased is located just above and to the right of the pedals - its called the control convenience unit but I suspect its like a junction box unit - there was a specific model for central locking so I thought it was the receiver module but I now think the receiver module (which you have) is separate. I couldn't find the module under the dash so I emailed the VW breaker I bought the convenience unit from and they have suggested it contained within the steering column, so I will have a look as soon as the weather improves and let you know!cheersTim Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
djkylej Posted January 4, 2012 Author Report Share Posted January 4, 2012 Thanks Tim.Just out of interest, what was the part number for the unit you changed above the pedals?I've being trying to find a wiring diagram online, but no joy.I'm hopeful the unit I've bought, 5Z0 959 433M works, the part number seems to coincide with what I need. djkylej Posted January 7, 2012 Author Report Share Posted January 7, 2012 Hi again.Had a go finding the convenience unit today.It is definately under the dashboard, left hand side above the glove box.I removed the glovebox hoping I would be able to reach up inside and remove it, but no joy. The air blower unit is in the way.So it looks like it's a full dashboard out job - no easy feat.I've started by removing the leat and right air vents, unclipping around the speedo and found a screw between the sppedo and dash. It looks like you have to remove the centre section with the radio etc, but I don't have radio keys so that will have to wait until Monday/Tuesday. The whole top of the dash seems to be in one main piece, including the surround around the glovebox, central section and fusebox cover etc.A bigger job than I'd hoped.......... I had a look today and couldn't find it - the salvage yard suggested it was contained within the steering column housing but even that is difficult to remove without a long screwdriver.I need to go back to VW on Monday to get a sump washer so will see if they will have a look on their system - just out of interest, how did you find out it was above the glove compartment? djkylej Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Share Posted January 13, 2012 Ok, another update.I finally managed to find the CCU, it was indeed above the pedals, high up on the centre console side of the footwell. It would seem I made the schoolboy error of following a diagram of a left hand drive car!It took a bit of effort to get out, I had to disconnect the main fuse box and remove a bit of ventilation ducting to get to it, but eventually managed.Unit now changed but no joy. djkylej Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Share Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) It's not too difficult Tim, more tricky than anything else.The fuse box has 2 or 3 star screws holding it to the dash, then a couple of clips underneath and it drops down out the way.The ventilation duct (directing air to the footwell) is just another screw and a tug.The CCU is sitting in a plastic bracket, it needs to be pushed up and away from you to release it from the bulkhead, then you can remove the CCU and 3 wiring connectors. Half an hour, maybe a bit more.The only other thing I can recommend is try a slightly different key sync procedure. This is in the VW workshop DVD ELSA: Key - synchronize The key synchronisation is required when some key is pressed out of the sphere of action of the system. – Turn the ignition key on by using the backup key. – Insert the key with remote control into the driver's side door cylinder. Turn it counterclockwise and keep it in this position. – Press the key -1 (LOCK) -continuously until achieving the synchronism that will be noticed through the automatic locking and unlocking of the doors. This didn't work for me, but the manual also says: The Central control unit for convenience system -J393- stores until two synchronisations. In order to perform a third synchronisation, it is required to reset the unit through Diagnosis, Measurement and Information System -VAS 5051A /52-. t “46 - Convenience system central module.” t “Function 10 - Fitting” t “Channel 11”, reset. So maybe we need to visit a garage with a diagnostic computer??? Maybe we've sync'd the key too many times? I have a VW Fox 1.4 2007, I have a faulty boot lock where I can only open the boot manually with the key, one part (5Z6 827 505 AF) was replaced but the fault happened again. I also have the drivers lock sticking, so although the key fob works to lock and unlock the door, I cannot physically open the door as the lock does not "pop up" completely. I can only get it to open with the key, gently turning it back and forth, interestingly, when I do this the windows open on both the driver and passenger side. This fault generally is a winter problem but this is now 2 years and getting worse. The electric windows have been replaced on both the drivers and passenger doors. Now, the pixelated display is faulty, and only half of the display is visible. I have been told it could be the central convenience control unit, any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.
