CheekyLupo
Pulled in with left indicator on yesterday and a wisp of smoke came from dash of the 1.7, plus an electrical burning smell. Left car for couple of hours, then turned on again (am in middle of Snowdonia right now during Bank Holiday, handy!). Engine runs fine but problem immediately restarted when turned indicators on briefly.Had no choice then but to drive it back to hotel we are staying in (25 miles up mountain roads) with wife and I using arms out of windows to indicate. Seems fine to drive without using indicators, no problems, but obviously need to get it to a garage ASAP. Anyone have any ideas please on what the problem might be. Relay? Fuse? Likely to be a big job?
Brammo
Not 100% on this but I heard a lot of people say the indicator stalks are poor on lupos. I imagine this is what the problem is. Search for indicator stalk see what you get. You have to get the steering wheel off which is easy providing you have the tools and know what you are doing. Where abouts are you from? Defcon5
As Brammo says, it is likely to the the stalks, easy to change.

Defcon5
No, its a 10 min job once the wheel is off, had to do mine a while back
Brammo
Yeah just had a look.– Remove steering wheel – Remove two cross-head screws.– Remove torx bolt.– Remove trim of lower steering column switch. Pull the lot off. – Detach connector from cancelling unit. – Remove trim of upper steering column switch. – Remove securing bolts. – Pull connectors off steering column switch. – Remove connector housing downwards out of guide on steering lock housing. – Remove steering column switch. Brammo
Oh and it's easy to get the steering wheel off. Get some 10 mm steel rod. Put a 90 degree bend in it where on one length after the bend is about 4cm then make this in to a negative screwdriver head. Then there are two holes in the back of the steering wheel. You have to use the flat blade you have created to push a wire off a kind of circlip. Which in turn releases the airbag. Do make sure you take the earth off the battery though. Also touch an earth point to release any static build up which may occur from clothing rubbing on the body etc. Edited April 25, 2011 by Brammo

CheekyLupo
Thanks a lot guys, especially for the step by step instruction on how to change the stalk. Appears it may not be that bad. Am from Redhill but currently stuck in wilds of Snowdonia. Going to take it to VW/Audi specialist in Caernarfon today and see what they say in any case. Always seem to get unlucky with second hand cars. Oh well!
Brammo
It's a shame I am not visiting my girlfriend now for a while. I could have fixed it for you! She lives in Brighton and I live in the Midlands so I pass very close to where you live. I am back at Uni now though and have no time to drive down.
