Any reason not to change gearbox oil on a Gti?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm just wondering if there's a reason not to renew the gearbox oil on a 6 speed Gti? Car has done 50k.

I'm asking as a very reputable VAG specialist recommended not to change the oil when i asked them to stating that it was a 'sealed unit' and would 'make my box noisy', and instead recommended topping up instead. I know the former is crap (sealed unit) but is there a genuine reason for not renewing oil in these boxes? I'm worried about topping up as a search on here seems to have people suggesting this is not a good idea. TBH i can't see that changing the oil can be a bad thing, and also can't see why topping up would need to be avoided, as suggested by some on here?

Help peeps. Confused.

Cheers.

p.s. i want to renew for peace of mind and longevity of the box but also as the box can be a little tempremental downshifting at times.

I had mine changed recently and the gearbox now feels brand new. Just make sure you take it to someone that will put the proper stuff in as recommended by vw. The guy who did mind did tell me what he used but i cant remember!

I can't think of a reason not to change it periodically.

I think you can buy it from VW, or get some uprated stuff from Opie Oils

I changed mines today...

made sure i could remove top filler plug first of all (good tip)

then i drained the box... car had been up to temp etc so was easier to drain

then i plugged the bottom hole up tight, used some garden hose and a filler to reach the top fill plug... then put around 1.5-2l of gearbox oil in...

then tightened filler plug

did i do it right?

Its a 2.1L box (from my understanding), VW say around 1.5 should do it unless you are rebuilding the box.

Im changing mine next week.

2.2L I think. I have changed mine twice and you can get 2L in.

You got the socket? I have one if you need it.

As for not changing the oil, yeah it's sealed for the life of the car, but that could be 8 years or 10 years. Will it make the box noisy? Shouldn't do.

I change mine at the same time as the coolant, every couple of years.

If it was sealed, how could they top it up?

You using G12? Should be fine for 4 years between cam belts, probably rated at 4-5 years. Ford stuff is rated at 10 years.

Did that fill it Jase? I thought it would take more than that

well i put as much oil as i could in it... ended up with it overspilling and around .5l on my drive...!

when i originally removed the filler plug around .5l came out of that so the filler plug was lower than the oil level!

put as much in as i could?

The guy who did mine made a comment about it not holding a lot of oil (compared with a Lupo 1.4s rod change gearbox). So it's probably an especially good idea to change the oil in a GTi box. Just my 2 pence though.

yeah there was 2 options... 75w80 or 75w90

i got this for my 6 speed fabia vrs and it did it no harm, its what opie oils recommends too and millers is a good oil, bound to be better than the 10 year old 100k stuff that came out ;)

Just to update :

had a wee run and the replacement of the box oil on my gti seems to have sorted out the notchy'ness in 1st and 3rd gear, before the change it felt quite clunky and as if 1st and 3rd had 2 positions in the travel...

now gear changes float in and there is no more clunking, voila :D

Good Job!

Did mine last year as I just dont like the idea of not changing it for a long time.........I agree with James on changing it at the cambelt interval.

I used the VW oil from TPS as there are different grades for the 5 and 6 speed
