Wouldn't fancy either as a daily. Out of the two the VX gets my vote though! Just make sure you test drive both and see if you can sacrifice the build quality and comfort (in comparison) of the BMW before committing to something as raw as the VX.

Driven both....

I would get fed up with the VX after a while.... so go with the Z4... infact you should talk with Crusoe he had both.

Consider the S2000, it's a half way house...

A VX220 is hard to live with.

If you're going to be driving it every day you need to be very hardcore! Drafts through the windows, leaks from the roof, only cold air from the vents, along with pebbles and bits of insects blasted into your face (heaters are notoiously crap).

But they look amazing, handle brilliantly, go like sh*t off a shovel and turn heads everywhere you go.

I deliberated between an S2000 and a VX220 NA for ages. Went for the VX, decided I should have gone for an S2000, and ended up back in the Lupo.

Bunch of girls

VX220 is fine for everyday use, you just need to make a few compromises. I used an S1 Elise every day for 2 years and it was fine - granted I'd rather have been in something else when it was -5 outside, but otherwise it was consistently fun. If you don't do many miles, or have a 2nd car, definately look at the VX, they make alot of sense.

I took the Exige on an advanced driving day, and went in a passenger ride for fast lap in a VXT, I was quite impressed. Nice slug of mid-range torque (compared to my VHPD anyway) easy enough to get in and out of and comfy enough. Roof off for the summer too!

Im on my 2nd S2000.... after 5 year gap....

I have considered changing a number of times... I drive a Fabia VRS most of the time now and the S2000 is such a nice car to slip into every now and then. It feels great and to be honest, if i had a VX220T I would be banned from driving within a week... The S on the other hand is great for pottering around with the roof down and has 9000 rpms to play with when you want some fun.

You rang :P

Yeah had both and a S2000 and now on a M3, all comes down to what you want from the car and what the roads are like that you drive on.

You need to ask a few questions first though which might rule one in or out.

Do you park on the street a lot, end to end or in tight car parks? VX220 has no door protectors and no bumpers so any minor dings can need £1000+ to fix if the glass fiber gets cracked. they also don't like being left out in the rain/snow and low temperatures can cause moisture in the material to freeze and bubble up under the paint causing nasty blisters and paint cracked patches. If it stays outside on the street I would rule out a glass fibre car.

If you use a vx220 for a short commute you won't be bothered taking a few minutes to get the roof down and the small fuel tank, awkward entry and noisy cabin will make it a bit of a pain. Great for weekend blasts, track use, sunny days and weekends.

BMW is still based on a 3 series underneath so does the sensible things well, decent cabin with plenty of space, good boot space and lots of nice touches that make the daily drive more bearable like a decent hifi, auto dipping mirrors, xenon lights, air-con etc. Steering is not as good as the VX but the engine is much more special and there is more grip. VX is a fairly nasty four pot after the creamy BMW straight six.

As Iain said the S2000 is about in the middle being less comforting than the vx but still having the basic comforts.

BMW should get low 30s mpg which is great for the power though service will be more than the vx200 though it has longer intervals. BMW needs specialist care but the VX is fairly easy to work on, unique vx220 parts can be very expensive and not always available so your car could be off the road for months if you needed a new front end for example which also might put you off if it is an only car.

Both great in their own way, one German efficiency and the other shed built lightness. I wouldn’t have another vx220 if it was going to be my only car, great for a weekend toy though.
