Car judders/shakes when I turn the engine off

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, here's one for you:

When I turn my engine off, the whole car judders/shakes.

So far I have:

Changed the cam belt and tensioners,

changed the drive belt,

changed plugs, leads and coil pack,

changed the air filter,

cleaned the throttle body,

flushed the engine through with engine cleaner,

drained and filled with fresh oil (Edge 0w-40).

The car throws up no fault codes.

This is really bugging me. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Engine mounts?

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately though mechanic checked those yesterday (including the one underneath that connects to the gearbox) and he reckoned that they were all solid as.

Try turning it off with the clutch in, see if that makes any difference?

It doesn't, the only way to stop it is to lift the clutch up (i.e. put it in gear) as I turn the engine off

Had this and discovered it was the lower swing arm bolts that connect to the gearbox..............the two bolts will be loose.

Get under the car............undo one at a time and put some thread lock on each before doing up tight again..................I did this and not had a problem since.

Mine was a rattle noise with a bit of a shake

Thanks Mike, I'll get it lifted and see if I can see what you mean. I'll be over the moon if it fixes my problem! The 'swing arm bolts' connect to the gearbox from where, can you remember?

Any other suggestions welcome?

Its a swing arm that connects from the chassis to the the lower central part of the engine/gearbox.............it simply prevents the engine from rocking madly!

The two bolts worked loose on mine and the swing arm bracket was hitting the bolts due to being loose.

Hey guys,

I did what Mike said this morning and the bolts were already really tight. Nevertheless, I took them off anyway, added some thread lock and screwed them back in.

And unfortunately, the problem is still exactly the same.

Going to be removing the crank case breather pipe, clean it out and fit a new seal tomorrow. Whether that will improve things I don't know???

I dont think its got anything to with the engine to be honest, if you watch any engine when you turn the key off they all shake, due to moving mass inside the engine and you suddenly stopping it.

Could you take a video of it and post it mabe? see how much its moving?

Can i ask how the mechanic tested the top gearbox mount? Its very difficult to work out if the bush is dead in that one as you have the lower gearbox mount holding the engine too, plus its under all the electrics.

undo the lower gearbox one and give the engine a good rock, see if you can hear any knocking?

Thank you for your input. I could probably record a video but it would only be on a crappy iPhone 3GS camera as that's all I have, what is it that you'd like me to video and I'll see if I can?

The mechanic said that the bottom mount was fine as you can obviously see that. I think to test the top one he got a crow-bar inside and 'wiggled' it.

I'm going back there tomorrow so I'll ask him to do that, I'm guessing that if there is knocking that the top mount bush is dead?

Edit: The car also seems to shake more when the engine is warm and been driven for, say, more than about 20 minutes.

sounds like a mount rubber. when it gets warmer it gets more flexible, as rubber does.

Okay, so you think that it's the top mount rubber that is hidden by electrical stuff? Are you able to describe where it is at all?

Thanks for your help!

Its a possibility.

its located on the LH chassis leg (passenger side). on top of the gearbox

Thank you! I'll do some investigation, I really hope that you are right.

Went to the garage today and tried to rock both the engine and gearbox and all mounts seem solid.

Really annoyed as I was hoping that it would be this.

Any other ideas?

I got the car up on the ramps and found there to be a slight leak of oil around the crankcase breather.

So, I replaced the seals and tightened it all up. Now I have no leak but the car STILL does exactly the same as it did before.

Can anyone tell me EXACTLY what happens when you turn the key to off in the ignition?

Key turns:

Ignition switch turns off......??????

Really bugged by this problem.

You know what, I've asked myself that question several times but I'm certain that the car shouldn't shake like it does.

Could a dodgy ignition switch cause it then? Or a dodgy fuel pump?

  • 4 weeks later...

Could a worn clutch release bearing cause this kind of thing?

I'm wondering whether it is the gearbox mount as, sometimes when I change into a gear it feels as though after the clutch has been lifted up, a second will pass with the car not being in the gear properly.

That's a really poor description, but can't think of any other way to word it.

If anyone in the South East thinks that they might be able to tell what's wrong with it then I will happily drive to you and buy you a tray of beers if you manage to work out what the problem is as my local VW/Audi Specialists are stumped, and I'm loathed to take it to VW.
