How exactly does the EDL work? Can I turn it off?

If one of the sensors isnt working properly, it could be thinking one of the wheels is slipping and is applying the brake to the left wheel, causing the pulling.....

Have I gone insane? Or is this a legitimate line of enquiry?

Pull the ABS fuse out. I don't think it's your problem though.

Tyres

It was the tyres.

I have no idea how.

But I have changed the two front tyres from left to right and its now perfect.

How on earth could that make a difference?

I love my car again.

It also handles brilliantly - I can certainly recommend replacing your bushes with Poly ones and getting new mounts/track rod ends etc
