Motoring magazines......

I like to read while defecating, so buy alot of magazines ( i do this anyway , not because im on the loo alot), these vary from vw mags to classics to american muscle.

What ive noticed in some though are huge mistakes , like a very nice looking vr6 mk2 which was described as "is always driven hard" yet it was on fairly stretched rubber wrapped around very nice and expensive Gottis and had a show cage , now i wouldnt want to be driving anything hard in those circumstances.

Apart from that what mags do people read , whats good about them and what do you find annoying .

I picked up Golf+ the other day in WHSmiths, looked like it was written by amateurs. Blantant points about cars were incorrect and the quality of the writing is just poop. The magazine on a whole angers me.

From the age of 16, I've bought Street Machine, Fast Car (before it was Chav and full of tramps models), Volks World from first issue and PVW.

I gave up a couple of years ago and don't bother now.

I religiously buy PVW.

My Dad buys Custom Car, Classic American and Classic and Sports Car, so I always pinch them for a read.

Now and again I may splash out on Front mag... which is a decent read, if by read you mean perv on the pictures.

Liam its the same mag i was talking about.

I usually get on and off custom car ,pvw , retro cars , topgear and practical performance.

When I did my paper round back in the day, I used to read Max Power, Redline, Fast Car and even Revs religiously, splurge my wages on one a week and that was a months worth of reading.

Now I can afford them, I don't buy any. Most of the articles in VW-related mags are on cars with build threads on one of the gazillion forums, and a build thread is usually far more intesting

just because you wouldn't drive it hard, it doesn't mean that the owner wouldn't. it makes no claims of being a track-prepped monster.

Scotty, did it not occur to you that they might not drive it hard on those wheels? Ok show a cage... wouldn't feel safe having a prang with a scaffolding set behind you.

I drive mine hard, mabe not in winter or in the wet but thats exactly why i have two sets of wheels, one for show, and one i dont mind damaging. I have a bonnet bra to keep the front looking fresh. Cars that look good in mags can still be driven hard.

I have read some features in various mags and totally agree, I thought WTF! But im guessing thats because the owner hasnt had much input in the feature write up. Ive seen my write up twice before it went to edit, and im happy with it. I dont know if thats the case with all features though.

And in all fairness iian, if it wasnt for my build thread my car wouldn't have been as noticed as it has been by mags. It gives the writers more of a chance too, If they need info then they go look at the build thread.

The build thread is the proof that its 100% Built not Bought, which quite a few mags respect.

I buy Practical Performance Mag, and thats it. It's written my people who know what they are talking about and when featuring a car, they have opinions from various specialists. When they are wrong, people write in, and they always seem to apoligise for there mistakes. It's a budget mag run out of a shed(Styled anyway) which makes it a good laugh.

My grandad buys just about every motorsport and classic car title, not going to list them as I cba, usally have them deposited on the living room rug on a Sunday afternoon, Autocar really anoys me, full of cars no average person can afford to buy, and always the same cars so seems.

I love Dave Walker's column in that magazine. He's a genius and I've learned ****loads from reading about what he's done and reading his articles in the mag and online.

I'd probs still run Megasquirt though

Aye it's the best bit, constantly LOL'ing at all the mods people do that sound great in theory but loose tonnes of power on the rollers. They did have David Vizard as a technical editior, seems to have vanished. The Rover SD1 with the 27L tank engine is a nice project too, full of dodgy, cheap pikey mods, that all seem to work. Then there is the Asian looking kid, goes through atleast one French hatch a month, always blowing them up, shows the quality.

Mankee , ive met him a few times down pod etc when i used to run a rallye , spot on lad .

Casper , its still contradictory though to have those quotes and those pics. Cars that claim to be built to be driven hard shouldnt really be running a fake cage , wheel adaptors and stretch. I do see your point though about it possibly running a second set of wheels but thats a total assumption.

SimonJ i also made no claims of it being a track preped car , so whats your point ?

ill even quote what it said in the mag " this car was built to be driven - and driven hard"

If i buy a magazine it will be PVW. I normally only buy a few a year though for when im doing a big journey somewhere or going away.

I normally just like chilling out at home and browsing through readers rides threads, and seeing whats going on in the vw 'scene'.

Cant beat having a magazine though, you can go through them when ever you like and see how trends have changed

*kills self*

Do it quickly and quietly please then , attention seeker.

Mitch i do like the car in bits but not as a whole, but slating that car wasnt the point of the thread , it was jsut some of the contradictory write ups when looking at the pics of the car.

and as for pvw i've allways got on with the whole crew even way back when si was working there. there will allways be followers of certain mags , i think both pvw and golf plus cover slightly different paths in the whole " scene"

Yeah agree and i dont mind buying different types or genres of mags but i just like a bit consistancy , if its meant to be a track car then be that , if its meant to be a fast street going car then be that , if its meant to be all show .......you get my point .
