I dont get how they can give you a quote upfront when they never actually knew what was wrong to begin with

took the car in they said the cable was to tight causing the presure pads to make noise

they said theyd change the cable but the plates might already be fuked

i said how much for just a brand new clutch dont wanna replace the cble

then bring it back in to do the rest of the clutch

they sed £300

i said ok dropped it in few days later

then few hours go by an they say my gear box wont do another 50 miles theyve had a look at it and its fuked

£550 but if they can just fix the problem maybe less

phoned them today and £620 and awaiting a part to be delivered

really pis_ed off

final verdict...

£620 for...

whole clutch and cable, bearings in the gear box and a 5th gear cog

(they showed me the cog it was not heatlthy) they were

'looking for my number to let me know about the price increase when i called'

and they ordered it without my concent because well it was needed no matter what id of said

they cant guarantee 100% that i can have my car back tomorow

but atleast everything will be sorted

and the money i had for wheels

well ill just have to start saving again

cheers for the advise an help

matt x

Thing is people, this is MidlandVW we're talking about - matt if you didnt wanna name names then thats alright but i am. There prices are silly and although i know a lot of people would recommend them i'd never go there. I asked them to just vagcom my car quickly to see if there are any errors and i got told "£25 for that mate" Errr. no.

I've never used Midland VW so I'm totally unbiased either way but I can't understand why you think its unfair to charge for a service that you obviously couldn't do on your own (or you wouldn't need to ask). You and I both know that its a five minute job but if you don't have the kit you'll need to pay. They are a business.

just like to add midland vw isnt a dealer they 'specialise' in vw audi seat skoda etc

got the car back wednesday afternoon and everything seems fine at the moment

they said let it run for a few hundred miles so everything can bed in and if i have any problems bring it straight back

clutch feels a million times better an unsure bout the 5th gear not a fluent gear change

but if its still like that in a week im going straight back and will refuse to pay for them to check/fix anything

Why they took the gearbox apart ill never no, sounds like you got mugged of mate, proberly showed you any old cog, do you know what you looking at when they showed you it?

i dont know why they took the gear box out either, and yes they could of showed me an old cog but what could i say 'thats not out of my car' ???

and no i didnt actually know what it was i thaught it was a big as.s polo (as in the mints)

but then he said it was part of my gear box not a mint :)

nfbr- i thaught i had a bad one, sorry to hear

Midland vw are sound, never charged me for vag com on any of my dubs, also 5th gear failing is a really common problem. My old Ibiza made some funny noises and 5th gear just disapeared. Exactly the same happened on my mk1 Arosa! Years ago I lost 3rd on a mk2 golf. Its not uncommon and dont think you have been ripped off at all. The box is known to be a problem in most polo/ibiza/cordobas/lupos of the late 90's.

As you can tell I have plenty of experience of this sort of crap happening and my Arosa ended up and an old guys place who had been rebuilding them for 30 years. He said the problem is that the box was always supposed to be a 4 speed. Instead of designing a new 5 speed box, VW just added a 5th onto it. The 5th gear (cog) gets hot and burns itself out. Simples

Midland VW probably saved you some cash because you would have been much more annoyed if they did your clutch, put it back together and a few weeks later you lost 5th and had to pay all over a gain for a strip down.

just pissed me off, i took my car in an 6days later get it back

an had to pay double what i thuaght i was going to pay

just annoyin tryin to get my hands on the cash like.

Just thought i'd add that Midland VW have looked after my cars for the past 4 years and they are reliable, cheap and honest.

This story just doesn't add up to me. They've never done any work without my permission and have saved me a packet on more than one occasion. They've a great reputation across VAG forums as far as i'm aware and i'd recommend them to anyone.

Their prices are silly? That's one of the funniest and most inaccurate comments i've read on this forum to date.

If there was a fault with your vehicle which they had to use VAGCOM to find and then did the repair work of course they won't charge you for the diagnostic, but suprise suprise they might not want to book their workshops up with people wanting a free check with no apparent reason for it. Go figure - what rip off merchants!
