Arron
Without knowing the price for the parts etc, that is an extremely high price to pay. Id ask to see receipts for all parts used and all of the old parts they replaced

JamesU
Thing is people, this is MidlandVW we're talking about - matt if you didnt wanna name names then thats alright but i am. There prices are silly and although i know a lot of people would recommend them i'd never go there. I asked them to just vagcom my car quickly to see if there are any errors and i got told "£25 for that mate" Errr. no.
Tarrier
dude i took mine to vw garage near me , you need to give concent (dw but spelling is wrong :S) before they can just take your gearbox out as it is quite exspensive in itself i dunno wot happened to you lol 620 for a clutch?tarrier
Arron
VW charge by the hour iirc? Seat wanted 60 pound to read my fault code .It sounds steep, but its too hard to make comment about something im not sure about. Most of that money you've spent will be on labour. marcusgrant
Isn't it expensive to get your car diagnosed because of the cost of the equipment used to do it?
electricpanda
Not considering you can buy VAGCOM for about £60-80 and use it as often as you like.

You and I both know that its a five minute job but if you don't have the kit you'll need to pay. They are a business.

Toot
Midland vw are sound, never charged me for vag com on any of my dubs, also 5th gear failing is a really common problem. My old Ibiza made some funny noises and 5th gear just disapeared. Exactly the same happened on my mk1 Arosa! Years ago I lost 3rd on a mk2 golf. Its not uncommon and dont think you have been ripped off at all. The box is known to be a problem in most polo/ibiza/cordobas/lupos of the late 90's.As you can tell I have plenty of experience of this sort of crap happening and my Arosa ended up and an old guys place who had been rebuilding them for 30 years. He said the problem is that the box was always supposed to be a 4 speed. Instead of designing a new 5 speed box, VW just added a 5th onto it. The 5th gear (cog) gets hot and burns itself out. SimplesMidland VW probably saved you some cash because you would have been much more annoyed if they did your clutch, put it back together and a few weeks later you lost 5th and had to pay all over a gain for a strip down. bantam1
Just thought i'd add that Midland VW have looked after my cars for the past 4 years and they are reliable, cheap and honest. This story just doesn't add up to me. They've never done any work without my permission and have saved me a packet on more than one occasion. They've a great reputation across VAG forums as far as i'm aware and i'd recommend them to anyone.
bantam1
Oh and P.S. get some quotes for the same work elsewhere and see if you were ripped off.

That's one of the funniest and most inaccurate comments i've read on this forum to date.If there was a fault with your vehicle which they had to use VAGCOM to find and then did the repair work of course they won't charge you for the diagnostic, but suprise suprise they might not want to book their workshops up with people wanting a free check with no apparent reason for it. Go figure - what rip off merchants!
