eveyone will probably yell at me for this but i've always used a bit of maintenence (sp?) on a rag and gone over the black plastics a few times engine bay wise

DO NOT PRESSURE WASH THE ENGINE BAY AS YOU WILL MOST LIKELY GAIN A MISSFIRE

(as has happened countless numbers of times at my work by polish valeters)

I do the same as Tom. When you spill a bit of oil when your filling/topping it up, give that a wipe round the plastics and they look all nice and clean.

Most of the plastics can be removed from the engine bay so you can give it a good wash out of the car and not have to worry about the electrics.
