Bangers and cash

Alistair Darling announced yesterday a scrappage scheme in an attempt to boost new car sales. And if you've got a 10-year-old car and fancy a new one you're guaranteed a return of £2,000 come trade-in.

So which cars you shouldn't scrap

Heres my top three

1, Volkswagen MK2 Golf GTI 16v

2, Peugeot 205 GTI

3, Volkswagen Corrado VR6

Its the stupidest scheme ever!

How many people are going to be going from a clapped out banger to a brand new car in a recession?

It means that people that are going to be buying a new car are going to be looking for a cheap car to trade in, which effectively makes every car over 10 years old worth around 2k?

You won't get £2k off. The government aren't that stupid.

They're introducing the scheme purely to boost the sales of suffering dealerships. They'll put their prices up by £2k so it's costs you just as much and they won't lose out :)

The government give you £1k which the manufacturers match, so you get the £2k off. However you'd probably be able to negotiate a grand from the dealer anyway. Plus the car has to have an MOT and you have to have owned it for 12 months.

Its not a great idea really, as said above, i dont see that too many people with 10 year old cars will go and buy a brand new model, if you wanted £2K off the price of a new car, buy an ex demo!

All it will mean is that there is a chance that some very nice and rare/interesting cars will be killed off even sooner.

I know they had a similar scheme in France, which wiped out a lot of very old and very (now) desirable cars. The french would often keep cars for ever, until they stopped working in a big way then they would be parked up in a field or garden for ever more. Not so now, which is a bit of a shame really.

Its ok buying a new car, but its not very environmentally friendly now is it. The old car needs to be broken and melted down to be used again, this takes energy and pollutes. Then there is the new car, which needs to be made, lots more energy and pollution there too.

Fact is, a new car is not a necessity, there are millions of good used cars out there, and in these times many people can do without buying a brand new car. Giving out £2K for a 10 year old car, with an MOT and that you have owned for 12 months isn’t really going to change very much. In my opinion.

Will have to wait and see how much of a difference this really makes to car sales and the disappearance of older ones.

As for cars id rather not see scrapped, the list would be quite a long one!

Was looking into this as well, not for myself but rather my sister and dad. My sister currently drives a clio which she hates, dad drives a s-reg polo sdi with 140k on the clock... cant be worth more than £500 the state its in. Planted the idea of giving the clio to dad for a work car and scrap in the polo for the £2k off a new smart for2 passion, we used to have an original smart citycoupe which was fun to drive, as good as free to tax, cheap to fill up and never put a foot wrong in all the time we owned it, she wants another and could have it on the road for £9k with lots of toys so thats down to £7k... and thats without any haggling added on.

I don't think that it will be that successful as people have pointed out most people with 10+ year old cars aren't in the position to go out and get a new car, but its good for some i suppose!

We are appallingly wasteful in this country.

A friend of mine scrapped her 205 GTI because it failed its MOT on having worn brake disks.

needless to say she is no longer my friend:lol:

for gods sake. ten years ago?? most cars that are 10 years old are still going strong!

and in my opinion, you shouldnt scrape the 205 gti's, Renault 5 GT, MK1 Golfs, Ford Escort Mk1, Mini Coopers, theres plenty of them :D

Keeping an old car on the road is more "green" that a factory churning out a new one; so I do not understand this scheme at all. They are trying to minimise "global warming" (what a load of ****) yet encouraging big industries to produce more, thus, polluting.

Yes... my poor G40 would be scrapped. :(

For once, why don't the government just let us do what the **** we want instead of trying to control our every move! Times are hard, so we can't afford to buy brand spanking new cars, maybe if the government didn't tax our every breath we may be able to buy these new cars and support the brilliant British motor industry... which consists of erm... umm... Nissan? Honda... Ford? Oh, no, we'll end up contributing to the German economy, or Japanese economy, where we get most of our cars from now!

Labour = Idiots. I can't wait for the next general election I can hopefully contribute towards throwing the dosy pricks out of office!

Its a token gesture, as said above very few people with a car over ten years old would be in the market for a brand new car.

A better plan would be to offer anyone £2k if they scrapped their car as long as they owned it for at least a year. That would kickstart the car market from the bottom up and far more people would participate.

Guy with 10yo car uses his £2k towards a 7yo car, guy with 7yo trades up to 3yo, guy with 3yo buys new.
