Induction kits

been lookin at the very popular carbon fibre BMC kits, and want to know, do they really make much power improvement?

my pipercross on the 1.4 seems to help it a little but its best feature is noise....slam the pedal down and EVERYONE knows about it....although it sometimes gets on my nerves (damn i gettin old). so come on. whats the deal with the carbon ones for noise and power?

No, they don't make much power improvement, and personally I think the carbon is a bit of a gimmick. They make a small increase in power, and, more noticeably, torque. But you're not gonna add 15bhp or anything.

But Dan with one you will have the sound of a TVR.

It is the greatest induction growl (cos that what it does) I have ever heard.

The car sounds like a race car!

Evereyone I know that have one loves it.

And if you speak to LinconshireGTi hge can tell you how to adapt it to make it 100% road legal.

Im even thinking about fitting one to my 1 litre the sound is that good!

Yeah, the oil breather filters to the atmosphere, rather than being pumped back into the engine through the throttle body. Which means the throttle body doesn't gunk up as fast, but also means that you're pumping out oil vapour into the atmosphere.

It also means you occasionally get a yucky whiff of oil in the cabin when you're stationary.

It is also to do with releasing hydrocarbons into the atmosphere which is a MOT faill too. The Oil breather needs to be fed back into the induction system to re burn the oil vapour and hydrocarbons. I have Videod the mod and posted it on here when we a few of us had meet with UK Polos.net in Dartford the one Me Si Matty and Boss John went to.The feeder needs to be fed into the feed pipe in between the filter and engine inlet. I have thought about fitting a BMC and doing this mod but i have instead modified the existing air filter system and get the noise and feels like additional response you should get from improved airflow. I would like to prove it though on a rolling road against the standard and against a BMC :?

do you still get the smell even if you stick one of those little mini filters on the oil breather pipe? Im tempted to just replace the filter element for a K&N one, although i wont get the nice noise then.

i have just fitted the standard airbox back to mine and its not one bit slower. just no noise now.

yea still that horrible smell with one of them filters, i was actually thinkin about putting my air box back on to see wot it was like, but this time i was gonna put my new cold air feed to it, as im getting a little bored of the noise and lack of performance gain.

It's not that bad a smell - 99% of the time you can't smell it at all. And there is a fix, if you're still bothered.

I wouldn't get rid of mine for the world, it makes the GTI sound a lot more mean (it sounds very weedy stock, IMO). If you do get an induction kit, get a proper CAI one - a K&N sucks in hot air from the engine bay, and will actually reduce performance.

In my opinion the BMC does give a noticable improvement. My car runs smoother, picks up its revs faster and doesnt pink at low revs with the BMC fitted.

Re: power from induction kits.

We had a Clublupo rolling road day about 18months ago.

Standard Lupo Gti's were putting out about `130-133bhp`.

MattyB had a K&N on his and got 128bhp.

A lad called Alex (no longer on here) had a BMC and got 141bhp.

Nuff said.

I was wondering about a BMC myself, but NOT for the noise, last thing I want is people laughing at my lupo for pretending to be a TVR.

The power side is all I'm interested in, but there are mixed reports on whether it is a marked improvement or not.

I've seen folk getting 140+ bhp with just an induction kit, so getting `8-10` bhp would be ace!

I'm just totally undecided...
