Little problem with my lupo

Recommended Posts

Just phoned the mechanic.

He's now into the pc, so he's going to have a look.

He hasnt ordered an ECU as far as i know yet, but has ordered a cam sensor and crank sensor to put on, he wanted to get into the pc first to make sure it was one of those because once he opens them he cant send them back...

Thank you for your help, i'll keep you posted! :)

if he's not done the diagnostic yet, and bills you for any ordered parts tell him to SLING HIS HOOK!!!! He shouldn't order anything till he does the comp diagnostic, common sense really. As i said if he's got the diag tools he should bloody well use them before guessing and causing you worry, regardless of whether hes a mate of your dads or whatever he is. Have to say he sounds dodge to me.

I think i was quoted 700 inc fitting for a new ecu, but that was from sh1tsRUS dealership, luckily it was the cam sensor and loom that was the problem and even luckier for me it was still in its 6 week warranty period from the dealership. joy!

Didn't you say you were part of aa or rac? Give their support services a call, they should be able to give you advice about second opinions etc and they may be able to do it themselves with no cost to you depending on your membership type.

It will most definitely not be your remap...

I can pretty much guarantee this.

People in the motor trade seem to be very quick to jump to conclusions that aren't realistic when they know a car has been remapped and will do anything they can to justify blaming the remap.

Get the car to a volkswagen specialist or someone with VAGCOM and get the error codes checked before you go any further.

This might sound blatantly obvious and may already be something you have checked... Crank sensor... That could cause it to start one minute and not the next.

i agree with the crank sensor

Right.

Just had a massive arguement with my dad, apparently you guys know nothing...after all, lupo's arnt exactly your speciality are they?

Yet his 'mate' at the garage who didnt even scan it first (isnt that the first thing you'd do?) has wasted time, and more importantly my money on labour looking for the problem...

He's ordered a cam sensor and a crank sensor but if he uses it he cant send it back. So if he uses the crank sensor ill be charged for it and the labour even if its not that.

He seems to think its the ECU (Like Al said he would) but i dont want to get him to put the crank sensor on and then me waste money.

My dad told me to do as i like, i've spoken to someone else who has a degree in this shizzle, and he says there may be a small chance it is the ECU if the remap was done and it was told to stop certain things happening.

Said it could also be the imobiliser.

Im going to phone jabba sport first thing tomorrow and find out if they turned anything off during the remap, if they dont even turn stuff off do you all think im right in just telling him to do the crank sensor and bite the bullet?

Please bare in mind my current situation though:

Im out of a job as of friday

I get paid friday, but £300 has to go to my mum.

I cant afford to keep having the car done, so i want it done ASAP

If i get this wrong my dad will just use the "I told you so" remark and give me another hours worth of lectures on how i never listen.

Thank you.

Get it out of your dad's mate's garage. He obviously doesn't have a clue when it comes to these things.

Get the car over to Midland VW and let the guys there have a look.

Thats my next plan of action, but i need to get it there and that would be the ballache problem.

Al, how certain are you that it'd be the crank sensor?

Al, i think luke with the R32 is sorting me out with your mobile, so if you get a weird call in the next 15, its me.

Sorry to be such a pain too!

EDIT:

When i finish work today i'm phoning Jabba Sport to find out if kev turned off anything on the ECU, i've been told this 'could' be the problem if the ECU is sending the wrong signals to the engine...

If not, im phoning the garage, asking wtf he's doing with my car, how much i've been charged so far and if he has plugged the computer in to find any errors.

If he says the computer has found an error fair enough.

If he hasnt even looked yet or if the computer wont tell him something, im telling him to just put the Crank Sensor on and what it costs me will cost me.

Al has been such a great help in this matter, be sure to pm me your address for a box of oreos!

He, and his technitions have told me that they're 75% certain its the crank sensor, so did a friend of mine who has a degree in something or other to do with cars & who also helps me with endless ammounts of things.

As soon as it got to the garage the mechanic said he also thought it may be the crank sensor, without me mentioning it once.

Its (apparently) £90 for the crank sensor, Al has researched this for me.

So, if this isnt whats wrong, im gonna be charged hell'uv'a'lot for making a wrong desicion!

Thank you Al, again.

James.

Alright James,

Don't worry about the oreo's until you know the car is sorted and back on the road just for chance I'm not right.

I've just been speaking to Jim, our Company director and his comments were the following:

"Cars are built with diagnostics ports for a reason, If a car has a running/starting issue the first thing that should be done before attempting to rectify the problem is plug it into a Diagnostics machine such as Vagcom and find out what component is not communicating propperly.

With the issue in question it could be down to any one of many things. The main possibilities are as follows

* Crank Sensor

* Coil pack

* Wiring to coil pack

* Wiring to ECU

* ECU main relay

* Soldering on chip (from remap)

I'm still pretty certain going off what has been said so far that it will be the Crank sensor.

Awesome, Al.

I'll send you a box of oreos when i can get some just for being so bloody helpful.

As i said on the phone,

He has managed to plug it in a diognostics machine and it said a couple of things.

Insufficient power from the Coil pack, which we both know is because the battery is about as buggered as todays financial climate.

No spark...

And the crank sensor isnt giving any power out (Or along those lines) so either way i'm going to need a new crank sensor.

The mechanic got sent one, but it was the wrong size and shape so he sent it back.

He now cant get one until monday, but if you're going to phone MidlandVW for me to find out if they have one in stock that would be very, very helpful.

Thank you again al, i cant say it enough!

James

Just spoken to Midland VW on this one and they've not currently got one in stock, but they're going to give their local supplier a ring to see how quickly they can get hold of one.

The part number you require is: 030 957 147B and the Volkswagen's official retail price is £60.48 + VAT

Getting really really silly now to be fair.

Friday i phoned him and the part was on the way for today, or he had to pick it up. One of the two.

I called him at 2:30 today, spoke to him and i got this back:

"The part has just arrived, im working on it now. I'll give you a call as soon as its done"

So i gave him my number (He only had my dads) and that was that, just play the waiting game.

Its almost 5:00 now! And no call? All he has to do is change the crank sensor for christs sake, how long can it bloody well take?

Im not calling him, but be sure from me - my dad will get a lot, i mean a lot of stick for taking it to some pikey garage for spending a week doing something that Midland VW would've done in half a day!

Bloody pikeys.

Im not coping.

I've been getting lifts to work, and walking the 2 mile back, its complete and utter ****...

Im phoning him tomorrow, if he says he still hasnt fitted it im going to go down and see what the feck is happening with my car, and why its been sat in a garage for a whole week.

Right.

This is getting exhausting!

Just had a phone call, probably one of the worst things i could hear.

The crank sensor has been fitted but the car is still like it was before.

So the electrics guy has been called in and has told the mechanic that the ECU is knackered. Its full of water and is scortched.

He is trying to refurb it, but i have phone Al and like he said, its probably not going to work.

So im after a 1.4E 16v ECU if anyone has one. It'd save me hell'uv'a'lot of money than buying a new one.

Ill let the mechanic do his thing. But I just want my car back!

This is turning into quite a little blog!!

Aha.

Spoken to my dad, he got pictures of today.

A couple are of the ECU itself.

Then some of my car looking sorry for itself, and its engine.

The van is where my ECU has been taken.

The cowl that covers the ECU up wasnt on properly according to the mechanic.

Anyway, what do you all think then?

I thought it just looked like two plastic bits, like from the interior or something.

I'll be checking for damages to the roof though haha, and sueing them for a full respray. That should hopefully cover the cost of the new ECU if i need one haha!

On the plus side, i might be selling my polo for £500 this friday! That should pay a bit!
