Little problem with my lupo

Recommended Posts

Riiight.

Brought a lupo from a lady saturday, started fine, drove fine, was all around fine.

Drove it home (150 mile) no problems

Drove it to leicester (60 mile there and 75 back) we went b - roads back :)

No problems

Drove it to cinemas last night, came out and it didnt work!? Was trying to fire up but just didnt want to know.

Went to get jump leads and asked someone for a jump, before we did he said "Try it again" so i did and it was fine...

Drove it the 15 mins home, and left it on the drive.

Got in it again this morning, first time start, excellent.

Got to work fine, got out and did my stuff.

When i came out, it didnt want to know? Wouldnt start at all...

So i phoned my mate, he came, tried to give me a jump and it wouldnt start, just kept trying and trying.

So my dad phoned the RAC and told them this lie that he was with me so he's covered blah blah blah.

The RAC guy checks everything out, the coil was apparently wrong, tried his, no luck...he thought that might be dodgey too so he went to get a new one and again, no luck...

Its not sparking.

I know its had a remap, and he said that it could be sending the wrong signals for it to fire up, but it must've been turned on and off almost 30 times since i've had it? And i've done about 400 mile in it too?

So, its on the way to to the garage tomorrow morning (Towed, he said it was too low for a loader :))

Do any of you have any idea of what it could be? The guy in the garage is a mate of my dads so im not gonna be charged stupid, but i mean if the **** hits the fan what am i expected to spend?

Whats up with my little green car!! :(

It will most definitely not be your remap...

I can pretty much guarantee this.

People in the motor trade seem to be very quick to jump to conclusions that aren't realistic when they know a car has been remapped and will do anything they can to justify blaming the remap.

Get the car to a volkswagen specialist or someone with VAGCOM and get the error codes checked before you go any further.

This might sound blatantly obvious and may already be something you have checked... Crank sensor... That could cause it to start one minute and not the next.

Re-map was done by jabba sport, its krazykev's old car. I saw the sticker and gave him a buzz but he had no idea what it could be.

It was also done over 6 months ago, might even be more (Thats just how long kev hasnt had the car)

Could it still be that? Its been fine for 6-7 months on the remap?

Cheers.

Yeah mate, and now i've taken it on board.

Just wondered if you thought i'd just had the remap the other day or if its been on for ages.

Like the RAC bloke said (He didnt know about the remap) it could be the ECU sending bad signals or summat.

:)

Thank you SO much.

Ill get in touch with the garage first thing in the morning, and ask him to check that.

He has a diognostics machine there too if thats not the case.

How much is one, would you know off the top of your head?

I was going to say coil pack... although this has been replaced, so crank position sensor.... Have you checked for a spark at the plugs, or the leads? Check the wiring for the CPS. The wiring on my rs turbo ka caused me problems where it overheated and melted... The car would then refuse to start, but was working fine until that point. A new piece of wire later, the car was running fine again...

Easyest thing.. check the wiring first, make sure its all connected and try it... if thats not at fault, and the car still refuses to start then replace the CPS sensor.

The RAC guy checked all sparks, everything, kept asking me to try it when he was checking voltage in them etc.

And i think he traced all wiring, he checked all the fuses the lot.

We was just waiting around him for 2 and a half hours so i think he checked quite a lot.

Thanks.

My old one started doing this before I got the Sport, I had to call the AA out to it. He was even less help than your RAC chappie, he looked at the car which was in the garage and said he thought it was a flat battery so he checked the voltage, it was fine, so he looked on the computer in his van, "there are no known faults with this model". He disconnected the battery for 10mins then reconnected it and it worked fine after that, his recommendation was if you are thinking of selling do it 'cos once the electrics start going thats it your ECU is on its last legs! Should have asked Al!

Yeah. Like I said the remap can't cause problems like that.

My biggest bet would be on the Crank position sensor. This is what sends the signals to the ECU to tell the coil pack when to fire.

I had this problem with my Renault Megane Coupe, it would start no problem, I'd go into a shop, come out, and it wouldnt start! I tried to jump start it several times, and only worked once, and even at that it took like 10 mins!

I bought a new one for the Megane from Eurocarparts (iirc) and it was about £20, and I paid a garage £20 to fit it, job done, never had another problem!

Thank you people! :)

RAC Guy was laughing at trying not to rip my front bumper off getting it on the low-loader, even though the guy yesterday said he wouldnt send one of them!

Anyway, its in the garage now, i mentioned the sensor to the mechanic and he thinks the same as all of you. Hoping on getting it back today or tomorrow at the latest!

Well the mechanic sounded optimistic anyway.

Told him i'd been on here and one of you suggested that, he agreed.

He said if it wasnt that he'd get on the pc and see what he could find wrong with it. Put it on diognostics machine!

Hoping for a phone call!

He should have put it on diag first even with possible problem suggestions!!!! Theres diag's for a reason, to stop punters paying money for unneeded 'rooting about' for possible problems.

Might not be your ecu, could be your cam sensor and loom which would cause the same problems, and cost less to replace than the ecu. i would try not to worry until he's diagnostic'd it.

They didnt charge anything, its the RAC...

And he didnt have a diognostics on the van, or he would've done.

Thats why its gone to a garage.

I meant the garage not the rac manny.

Suprise Suprise, just got a call saying that he thinks its the ECU that has gone wrong due to the remap.

He says its going to cost a bomb to do!

Im so annoyed right now, brought the car the weekend, and now it wont even start.

I dont know if he has had it on the diognostics machine, he phoned this morning and told me "the wires behind the plug that he'd usually plug it into are a bit mangled and wont work"

How much is a new ECU?

Can i use one of another lupo 1.4? If so does it HAVE to be from a Lupo 1.4E or can i use an S one for example?

Is it even the ECU? Or is he just blaming that now that he knows it's had a remap?

How should i go about my situation now? The car wont start so i cant really move it anywhere, so its stuck in his garage until it will get done?

I have another person with degrees in motors, and AwesomeAl telling me that its likely its not going to be the remap, and then some mechanic blaming it, guess which side my parents are on?

Thank you ever so much folks!

JamesU.

To be honest mate if this guy is a friend of your dad's he should be able to sort this without the need to rip you off!

If its the ECU you can probably obtain one from ebay from a car someone is breaking? (Could be wrong, other people on here will probably give a better answer)

If your not happy with this mechanic I know a good VW specialist in Kent, although as im not sure where your based this could be a bit of a trek for you!

Good luck mate!

Thank you though!

haha fair enough buddy!

I would definately get a second opinion from someone you can trust though, the mechanic could be right but its a pricey thing to get wrong...

I would say its probably the crank sensor to be honest but if hes right and theres been some dodgy tampering with the ECU wiring etc then i suppose it is a possibility!

Costly though unfortunately!

I wouldnt see how an ECU would just die and be okay then die again! Thats what im not being able to understand.

Im unsure if he's tried a crank sensor.

And i doubt the ECU would've been dodgey messed with, as i said, KrazyKev owned the car before, and i believe he did the re-map, its not something you'd want to do...mess up your own car!

Thank you everyone!
