Lupo GTI or Clio 182?

Daz, remind us what garage you work for so we don't bring our cars there.

An unlicenced driver test driving my car? I would kick your boss in the nuts.

:)

And BHP vs...

...did you see the Top Gear BTC report? 1275 Minis and Hillman Imps whoop assing alongside much more powerful cars and in many cases coming of better. Just goes to prove BBHP isn't the be all and end all.

Unlicenced? I've had my full license for months

and i was talking about power to weight? god don't people read?! :P

I do not see how, in any way, a Lupo GTi could be quicker than a Clio 182. More power, similar weight and *possibly* a better handling car (never driven either in anger), it doesn't work out at all.

To me, like Tigz said, the Lupo is a warm hatch, the Clio is a proper hot hatch. Must be some mega blinkered people out there to think otherwise!

0-60 times are irrelevant in my opinion, it only takes one slightly miss-timed gear change and you've got it all horribly wrong.

I'm happy with that, that pretty much sums up everything for me tbh

Have you just changed your profile? I'm sure when I said that it stated that you were still a learner :)

French cars FTW

*Except for Megane 225's (sorry Alex!) cos they harass me for races all the time.

Oh no don't be bringing the Megane's into this, the 225s are a whole new ball game compared to even the 182s!! :D Apologies if they try and race, there's hardly any round my way anyway. lol

Although I think the GTI and 182 performance debate has been summed up quite nicely. I do think there is a little big of a blinded outlook from some as you'd really have to have driven them both to decide. Having owned a 172 and own my Lupo Sport which is only just shy of GTI power there really isn't much to compare.

Only thing I would say is that its very easy if you've only driven one car to think it is the quickest thing. For example when I had my 172, it felt bloody quick and it was. Had a traffic light blast with a Corsa which had 250bhp and was a cars length ahead by the time I changed into 2nd. Just proved to me that there are cars even faster out there!!

Alex - I agree with you on the 172/182 v GTi in terms of performance and handling - I just feel they are great cars let down by poor build quality and reliability (only a short time ago the head honcho at Renault admitted this across the Renault range and promised to improve things).

I need to disagree when you say the Sport is only just shy of the GTi power - the GTi has 25% more power, which is fairly significant when you consider the GTi weighs about 970 kilos! Having said that, I'm pretty certain a Sport could hang on the tails of a GTi if driven hard. I had a Sport but never ripped it until the day I agreed to trade it in for my GTi - as I knew I would only have it for a few more days I red-lined it on B road and thought it fair shifted for a little 1400.

Depends what your after... Build quailty or speed? The lupo is a very well built car.. Not that quick standard... The Clio is very quick out the box and more of a performance car.... However it is not so well built... My mate megane 225 was a lot quicker than the golf gti however it has just fallen to bits over the years...

Both cars are fun to drive.. The lupo is a little to soft suspension wise but other than that is quite rewarding.... very rare and girls like them... The gti will save you money on insurance.

i think i read the 182 is 16 seconds to 100mph...

the lupo gti is 23 seconds... a lot slower...

i think the 0-100 times of the 182 and the megane are actually the same?

if you think a lupo gti can do 0-60 in 7 odd seconds... That means it takes 16 seconds to pull the other 40 mph to get it to the 100.... it slows down a lot after 60... the Clio pulls harder for longer and manages to do the next 40 mph in 8 seconds....

0-60 times are worth **** all.....

I wouldnt bother with the 182 to be honest, a good freind of mine used to have one (well the 172, but its pointless arguing over 10brake) anyway, he said theyre great in a straight line, interesting in the corners (lack of handling refinement combined with lots of power) and down right dangerous when you try and overtake anything.

I'm inclined to beleive him as well as he's a sports car designer and has plenty of track experience too. my view is that the one's that were on the trackday that i lest went on were either broken, the driver had no skill or the drivers were scared of them because none of them worried the lupo gti, ESPECIALLY in the corners.

I thought the handling was very good on the 182... A littel high in the seat but it felt responsive... I think i could drive it quicker through some twisty stuff than the clio V6 I had for a day.... That was scary...

the gti is good once its lowered the standard suspension is just way to soft and bouncey!

The handling is very good they are meant to be quite lively but the the chassis is spot on.

MattyB said on his last drive out, that despite having a massive power advantage in his alfa, a clio left him down the lanes.

having just read through this, it is beinging to sound just like people repeating what others have said.

There is one thing and one thing only that will make you buy a car when it comes down to it, and this is if you feel right in the car when you are sitting in it and driving it.

at the end of the day you can decide that you want a performance car or a hot hatch or something economical, but until you get into it and drive it and see how it makes you feel, generally comparing cars is completely useless.

just my half penny's worth

Agreed :)

TBH this question is like a what wheels shall i put on my car? As said above its all down to personal preference ;)

All's well...

There's 2 or 3 in Redcar.

The white one had me once cos I cocked up my change from 4th to 5th. I know his has been modded, it's got a different exhaust and bigger FMIC behind the bumper, there's not much in it between our cars really

They're nice cars and I do like them, but the ones round here are driven by total bell ends.

Only Clio I'd buy is Williams clio

Quote "......developed 150bhp and brought up 60mph in a smidgen over 7.5 seconds. Top speed was an impressive 134mph, which means that the Williams Clio is both collectable and quick."

Old skool porn!

Haha well sadly they don't check for that when they sell cars!! Wish they did though, its mostly Focus ST drivers round my way, see them bloody everywhere.

Whats the power from your car mate? I'm guessing its far from standard and the power to weight would be very good. What you'll find with a lot of the Meganes now is that with a bigger FMIC and re-map they'll be pushing about 270bhp so certainly not shy, surprisingly the exhaust on these as standard is pretty good so upgrades don't make much of a difference.

If they were running 270bhp I wouldn't keep up with them, so I doubt they are. A 270bhp one would waste me, there's not a lot in it with a stock Megane 225, obviously on any road with twisty bends I'd get my arse handed to me.

Mine is supposed to run around 150-160bhp, it weighs around 800kg. So you're looking at around 190-200bhp/tonne? I'm aiming to get closer to 180bhp with the new charger, and lose a bit of weight to get closer to 750kgs.

My neighbour has got a Clio 172 pushed up to over 200 very easily.it's neck snapping fast acceleration but as everyone has said the interior is poor. Also I think the only seat you can adjust the height on is the drivers and when I was in my mates car it felt that I was going round a corner at 80 sat on a bar stool.not nice.are you a bitof a show off?cus the lupo makes you feel special and different.people always look check out my sport and you always suprise people when you boost past then in there big lumps.the lupo has an indescribable way of making you feel special.I love mine in an unhealthy way as it's got so much character you form a strong bond with it.love em even tho I've had a few probs with mine.plus you are part of the notorious vdub gti club.
