iShine
When my engine is on and i'm changing gear it's as stiff as anything, but when i turn my engine off and change gear it's as smooth as normal. I'm taking into a garage at 3 to have a look, but now i'm doubting it is the oil atall. :I

Niche
You're right!http://www.kamracing.co.uk/vw-lupo-5/trans...ar-oil-143.htmlThe Lupo actually takes 2.8 litres and not 2 litres so you may need to buy that item twice.

Any advice? Its from a garage so it would be good to identify a fault now whilst its under the 3 month warranty.Cheers

akbarirfan
Hi All,I have a W plate Lupo 1.4 non-sport at 66K on the clock. My gearbox is near enough smooth and the clutch seems fine, but I am getting this whine noise. It only happens when I am in gear, i.e. when slowing down or speeding up. When I press the accelerator down a very little bit (I am talking like a few mm's) I can get the whine to stop, the car is not accelerating but this stops the noise. So rev in first (moving off whatever), stop revving (still in gear) to slow down then whiiiiiiiine..I hope you get the picture. The whine is louder in higher gears, may be related to speed I guess but not sure. Can you diagnose the problem is?My best bet after reading this thread and the pedal box thread is that the bearings (if so which one's please) need replacing. Can somebody help me out please before the whole gearbox goes to scrap! Also where do you get the repair kit from? Thanks,Irfan Edited October 26, 2008 by akbarirfan
Mitchell
there is a company advertising gearboxes for all of these lupo polo models exchange on ebay at around 360.00 exchange, tbh i think thats a good price. there is a £50 quid surcharge if your box casing is beyond re use. Does it get really noticable in 3rd and 4th?Garage took the 'box apart, and the main bearing had failed, taking out the input shaft and syncro rings on 2,3 and 4.People on here reckon recons can be had for a few hundred quid. Get it sorted now before it goes totally.
akbarirfan
Ahh ok!So the main bearing needs replacing? Anything else that need replacing? How much does a job like this cost, before I go to the garage and get skanked!Thansk!

It's difficult to determine exaclty what is wrong over the internet!Take a look at my "Wear and Tear???" threadhttp://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=47658

Do they have your car? Would be best to take it somewhere that specialises in transmissions.Where are you based?
akbarirfan
Nah they don't..I will check it out some other garages, but they know about the common problems on these VW's..Birmingham. You?

You?I'm in Somerset. Just thought I'd ask, as I can tell you of places not to take it to around South West/Bristol!Let us know how it goes, but just as a bit of ammo when you go in, say that it sounds like your pinion bearing is on the way out
akbarirfan
from what I read the pinion bearing is to do with the clutch...whining when in neutral, I don't have that problem! The mechanic is a mate too, had a chat with him about it all so he said he'll check it out.
LJ51NXX
It will be the Clutch release bearing if you have whining in neutral. It's the pinion bearing that fails in the gearbox, taking out the input shaft.
akbarirfan
Oh jokes, must have misread..I will give thema head up. I asked him, can you tell when a bearing is messed up? he said yeh, its fairly obvious which one it is upon looking..pinion, will keep that in mind dude. Do you where I can get a price for one?Cheers.
LJ51NXX
Prices vary so much, depends on where you take it. If you think, a bearing kit is around £85 IIRC, and it takes around 3-4hours (again, depends on where you go) to take off and replace once done. I think £400 would be fair. I'm sure I've seen re-con boxes somewhere for £395 though, nut then you'd ahve to pay for it to be fitted.
akbarirfan
But where do you get the kit from? Straight from VW? GSF?£400 shizer..thought it would be less than that, will have to discuss that with the mechanic!
LJ51NXX
Not entirely sure where to go for the parts, try a quick google search. I think Vols-Apart may be able to help.As I say, it depends on where you take it, may be able to get it cheaper if you're mates with the guy. akbarirfan
Hmm no luck with find the pinion bearing parts..how do you know the price is about £85ish? I cannot find it anywhere!Yeh I sure hope so!I don't wanna lose the loop, its too cool!
