Hi All it's been a while since i was last on here. This was mainly due to being forced off the road in my last GTI sad to say it was written off. I am happy to say I did get another GTI to finish what I had started.

I am now here with gearbox related issue on my 52 Plate 6 speed.

Having looked about at the scenarios eg whining when decelerating in 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th decided to take my car to my trusted VW specialist (Used him for the last 4 years) for a gearbox rebuild.

First choice was Bristol Transmissions who wanted £1k for a full refurb (To pricey)

Second was TES Transmissions In Westbury £550 + VAT

We went with TES and further to reading their site they seemed as good as my mechanics first choice.

Long and short is the whine would usually be in deceleration and 2,500 and 2,000 RPM through the mentioned gears.

TES found the final drive going when the box was opened and it’s been said by my mechanic that the box was fully refurbished all new bearings.

Now since the box has come back I had a whole new clutch fitted at the same time and the issue is worse than before. I now get the whine through 3,500 to 1,900 rpm in the previously mentioned gears.

In addition going from 3rd to 1st gear when climbing a hill in Devon at the weekend was difficult eg stiff to select now this has been the same since and from any gear into 1st. The selection is stiff unless I’m at an almost standstill and in most cases it will only slide easily when stationary.

I Will be looking at going back to my Mechanic but he has dismissed the gearbox being the problem and put it down to loose flex pipes in the exhaust where they have been moved for him to work (This I will check tomorrow at an exhaust specialist)

Is anyone able to comment on the above help is appreciated??

When my gearbox went it first started to whine in third. I don't know the gear box design but normally as the gears go up they are on a different shaft.

Main shaft of 1-3-5 and lay shaft of 2-4

Mine was on third and then gradually passed the infection to other gears, first was always fine though. Noise is most prevalent on decel because it's when the gearbox is being pressurised the reverse way to driving conditions and the opposite way to the cut of the teeth.

I put 3 litres of oil on the box when I replaced it, castol expensive stuff and have had a completely faultless box since and it only cost me £285 for bearings and syncros :) the stiff gear change could just be the linkage not being aligned correctly. I didn't get mine quite in line at first but changed it on the one with an adjustable connector and now it's fine.

Hole in the exhaust.

I'd just check it yourself. My friend had a hole in his flexi pipe last weekend and it sounded like a racing machine and was incredibly loud.

Get the car on the curb so you can feel around the pipe with your hand. You'll be able to tell if there is a blow as it will be gushing out air. I do all my mechanical work myself because then I know it's done properly. People in garages only work on that car every so often so aren't sure how everything works. You have to learn some time and a lupo is a great base to do that. My golf is blooming complicated!!

Yonson123 and I took the engine out of his 1.4s in 2 hours the other day to do the clutch :)

Below is a video of when my gearbox went.

Hi,

I recently had a noise (which i originally thought was a drive shaft) which was a scraping noise under load

I took it to Team Valley Transmissions in Crowther, Washington who immediately told me it was a bearing problem

and that its pretty common in lupos. So if you have a noise i'd say get it checked if your not sure before you

do any more damage

Unfortunately because id still been driving the car thinking it was the shaft the bearings had collapsed even though

there was no stiffness in gears/whine etc

If anyone in the north east i would highly recommend TVT the box feels brand new and they want me to go back after 500 miles

to check everything's ok

My arosa somtimes doesn't want to go into 3rd and 4th gear, it just jams? if you're sat without the engine running you can put in from 3rd to 4th to 3rd to 4th fine. But from any other gear it jams :/

Do any of you know what the problem could be? cheers

hello all..

i have a vw lupo 1.4s 16v its done around 76k and i am starting to have gearbox problems,

when i got the car the clutch was very heavy so i had that changed along with the gear box oil, it was fine for a few hundred miles and now its crunching when going into 1st gear when coming down from second, when the car is stationary it doesnt crunch when put into 1st gear. im thinking maybe the clutch cable just needs adjusting?

also the gear box has developed a very loud whine in 1st, 2nd,3rd and 4th gear, and is getting quite hard to select gears and is making lots of strange noises Lol , i am thinking about getting a reconditioned gear box as i no they are a common fault and i would like to get it changed,

can anyone give me any advice? would be much appreciated :)

thankyou

My gearbox went about three weeks ago so i sourced a recon one with a 12 month guarantee for £460 had a mechanic in the family do the labour and had a new clutch aswell. Been driving it around for two weeks and yesterday morning somethings happened cos it was really hard to put it into 2nd and 3rd :( I just about managed to get it to a garage but they have no space till tomorrow to look at it...does anyone know what it could be? I've told the garage to speak to me before they do anything as I don't want to void the warranty on the gearbox...but I also don't want the people I had the gearbox off to tell me to "send the gearbox to them for inspection" which is mentioned on their warranty terms and conditions. That would mean paying someone to remove the gearbox and then finding a way to transport it to Kent! :( so unhappy...don't know what to do...already spent nearly £800 on it two weeks ago I don't know if I can afford/if its worth spending any more!

I currently drive a VW Lupo GTI 1.6 5 speed model, I have a problem with my gear box and it will not go into 3rd gear. All the other gears are ok but it will not go into 4th at all. The garage seem to think it will need a new gear box (they haven't looked at it properly) I'm hoping this is not the case as I would be looking at spending up to £600 which I haven't got!

Could anybody help me find out what might be wrong with it? I'm hoping it is the selector and not the actual box.

Any help/tips on this would be much appreciated!

Thanks

I had a similar issue with my gears. It happened to be that the gear selector bracket under the car had snapped. If you jack the car up and have a look at the selector mechanism it would be fairly obvious

Oh right cheers for that, do you have an idea how much it would cost to replace/repair?

I just got mine welded back up. Probably cost a tenner lol. Worth checking first!

Cheers mate, I hope that is the case with mine as the garage I took it to today instantly said new gear box without even inspecting it. Fingers crossed its what u said! There is no whining or any other symptoms of gear box failure

My lupo revs up some times without moving and then kicks in I know it's clutch but I had clutch done 3 months ago were they spotted a small hole in the gearbox and said its nothing to worry about however it does leave gearbox oil on the drive way so it's not just a small leak, and now it jumps out of reverse. I'm just wondering if the gearbox oil could be getting into my clutch and making it slip or anything? Also best place to get my a recon gearbox if it is done with cheers.

So aggressive.

I'm not sure but the tdi a2's use hydraulic clutches so don't know how big of a job it would be.
