The definitive Gearbox thread

To be honest it's something I've read on here :P

Put it this way, it may cost you a few hundred quid, but it will put a smile on your face when you get it back. You can't be in as bad a position as me at the moment!!!

Haha! Might give Veedub a call tomorrow then, see what they say.

Just read on another site, that you gotta open up the gearbox to replace the bearing, so you might as well replace all the others (whatever they are) inside there..what you think? Like a little rebuild type thing.

Yeh I know dude..part of me is drifiting toward Jap cars, cheaper to repair and that's if they go wrong :(

Yeah, thats what I was getting at before, thought that's what you were having done?!?! Yep, the 'box will have to come right out, so yes, a full rebuild would be the way to do it.

Would be worth changing the clutch while you've got easy access to it aswell.

Nooo, you don't want Jap Crap!!! LOL! But yeah, I get what you're saying, they do seem to last ages, and parts are so abundant and repairs seem to come cheap aswell.

Let us know what thay find wrong with it dude!

From VW just in material : 1.200 euros - :wtf: , 3 gear stuff and 2 too since is getting bad, sincronized bearing of course, and material from 1 to 2 gear and 3 to 4. jesus. Just to take the gearbox out were 4 hours at 25 euros...

And then...

From you country :

Hi Sir

I am able to supply the gearbox in which you need for the lupo gti 5

speed manual fully reconditioned with 1 years warranty

and new uprated bearing at £395 no vat, delivery would cost £90 no vat

to Portugal and will also have a surcharge deposit of £250

which is fully refundable once the old gearbox comes back to me,

below is the gear box explained

NOW FITTED WITH AN UPRATED PINION BEARING (AS USED IN RACE CARS) TO

PREVENT THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRING.

These gearboxes suffer from bearing problems and 5th gear problems. If

you buy s/hand unit you will not know if it is OK until it is fitted.

Fitting usually costs £150-200 and if g/box is faulty it will be

another £150-200 to change it again and you could end up back to

square one, having paid out £300-£400.

We can supply a fully reconditioned exchange gearbox at £395 with

one year/12,000 miles guarantee. We can fit at £130 which will give

you a full one year/12,000 miles PARTS AND LABOUR warranty. All prices

plus VAT.

So got me a gearbox from UK,

Transfer made today and waiting :sweating:

Hi

I've purchased a 2003 Arosa 1.0s recently and I seem to have a problem with 4th gear, every time I accelerated or braked slightly I get a slight movement in the gearstick which causes a clicking noise. Ive had this checked by VW who say they cant find an issue with it and claim its just "a thing" that SEAT's do, but I remain unconvinced as it seems weird that it only happens in 4th gear. Do you guys have any ideas what could be causing this clicking noise?

The other halfs Lupo Sport does this, and the fiirst few gears seem loose and difficult to engage

I have had issue's with 4th gear going up and down the box, the GTI has enough power/torque to skip gears, but I've changed the oil today... and 4th gear is back!

It's usally a pig to get first and reverse, even when double de-clutching......... This has also disappeared.

I used Silkolene SILKTRAN SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil.

Hey, I'm new to the forum! :)

I've been looking at a Lupo 1.4 Sport, Excellent condition, 2000 model.

But.. There's a problem with the gear box. It wont go into reverse or 4th gear (maybe 5th - Not 100% sure)

Due to this, the car is cheap. What do you guys think would need replacing, and how much should it cost roughly?

Thanks in advance. Jamie

ok i'm having trouble!

no nosie and goes into 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th fine

reverse can be slightly tricky to select but i put that down to me

my problem is 3rd gear, dip the clutch and slide it into gear easily, the gear lever goes past the syncro fine but doesnt always go all the way home and select 3rd, basically a nats bits short of full throw of the lever and lift the clutch and find it grinding, back to neutral, back into gear, lift the clutch and find out if it made it into gear! i think its either adjustment of the gear selector or an internal problem (will change the oil as a hope)

any ideas?

well i tried cable adjustment with no luck, also changed the oil with no luck so went to a gearbox specialist. specialist says it could be the selector mechanism in the box and that they can change it in the car.... just wait and see

Sat at the lights today, went to select 1st gear, didn't go in. Had this happen before, usually just back into neutral then 1st again, but not this time. Cannot engage 1st, 3rd or 5th gear, but 2nd, 4th and 6th are fine :(

Sounds like it could be the gear selector, gonna ring local VW specialist in the morning.
