Max Posted January 13, 2008 Report Share Posted January 13, 2008 I've managed to blag a Nikon D200 on expenses so I feel its only right I learn how to use it. Can anybody point me in the direction of some good tutorials for numptys. Also, feel free to add tips to this thread; you may think somethings obvious but I probably wont!Then there's the editing. I have photoshop CS on my laptop and I'm going through the tutorials that come with it; which bits in particular am I best off learning to scrub up my photos. one litre wonder ;) Posted January 13, 2008 Report Share Posted January 13, 2008 id get a dedicated program to convert your image files , they work so much better . for an example , with the version of photoshop i cant ajust half the things i can do with RawShooter Pro , for example fixing lighting ( if under street lights RawShooter has a button you click and it sorts out the white ballance for you ) where as photoshop doesnt allow me to do that Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A good camera that covers plenty of bases in the functions stakes.Before you start playing with the on camera settings it's important to understand what they all mean and will do and how they work together. (i'd consider shooting in the AUTO setting for a while for any chots you intend to keep)Have a look at the website below...http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/some of those terms are very important... aperture, Shutter speed, Depth of field, etc etc etc...There is lots of good advice and help in the learn section of that website, i'd advise you have a good read there.I started out by reading loads and loads and took photo after photo testing the different settings and how they affect a picture.There really is too much to say about taking a picture for here so i'd advise you do a load of reading and take lots of pictures and come back with some questions after that.As for image editing software...Photoshop really is the best out there, bar none. I used to use RAWshooter with my D50 and it's a great program but it does not support my D80, and i think that may well be the case for the D200 also. Phooshop CS2 & CS3 both come with a RAW plug in that you can download for free from the adobe website, it's very good and gives you all the options you get in RAWshooter, i just think it's not quite as user friendly.I also use a program called Adobe bridge, this gives you an overview of all the pictures in a location (that you define, eg. a memory card) and you open them from there in photoshop.for basic editing if you shoot in RAW you can up the contrast to good effect and this, along with a few tweeks to brightness and saturation will make most pictures look nice. there are also AUTO levels/brightness/contrast options that you can use in the drop down menu's at the top.I'm far far far from a master at photoshop but i got a friend to show me a few basic tricks and i went from there and just tried things to learn. I've not really tried any online tutorials, but i read alot of photography mags each month and they always have good simple tips in them and i've tried many of those to good effect.I hope that helps to get you started, i'll leave you with a couple of pictures i took only the other day while in Edinburgh for inspiration...Matt.
