Cruise control on 1.4 TDI's

Just spoke to a company that fits cruise control to VAG cars.

They didn't list the Arosa/Lupo as cars he does, but he said he has done a few A2's with the engine 'AMF'

He reckons the main issue is the control stalk. I said to him most places use a mk3 golf stalk, but he just said he tends to use the correct stalk availiable per model from VW/Seat/Audi.

HOWEVER he did say he would install the cruise control if i was able to get a compatible cruise control stalk that would still undertaken the underlying functions of the control stalk.

Most places use a mk3 golf cruise control stalk (might be a mk4?)

So can anyone enlighten me which stalks with cruise control are compatible?? I know someone on this forum has cruise control fitted, but from what I read it didn't use a stalk.

JKM motorsports are looking into this for me too, as I know it can be done (as proven by a member on here) but the challenge is getting the stalk according to another.

But my stalk seems identical to a mk3 golf version (my bros old gti) so can't see why the mk3 golf cruise control items won't work.

Just been given the news......

a VAG specialist in the south is willing to look further into this.

Their response was that the stalk isn't the issue, its getting the wiring.

They said they're more than happy to have a go at wiring it up using the stalk, but because the wiring has to be direct to the ECU they could not gaurentee me it will work as its a custom type modification. Plus I will have to pay for any labour and costs involved, and it starts from £150 and they could just bail during it if they see it will not work.

So that could fit me with £150 bill with nothing done.....

Thats the price of being a guniea pig! So getting back to them with my ECU code then having a long hard think if i want to be a pet guinea pig, but if it works!!! Thats 400miles a week of easy commuting for me!

If they get the wiring right it'll work.

But they are right it will need wiring to the ECU.

Four wires from memory.

set, resume, enable, on/off

I'd be interested in 'upgrading' mine to a cruise stalk if the right one is found.

If you look back at the old thread the wiring details are there.

I use two toggle switches, one for set, one for resume.

close them both & it switches it off.

Ive just had a quick look at our T4 Caravelle and its got the same stalks as the Arosa, only ours has cruise, so its the same stalk only with more buttons.

So im wondering if a cruise stalk from a 2003 T4 Caravelle would be suitable to fit our Arosas?

Dust off your soldering iron & go for it.

3-4hrs & you'd be there

Problem is I don't want to 'fry' my ECU and plus its been re'map'd so cannot afford to replace the ECU and get it remap'd again.

Will have a think again; as its a battle between paying someone £200 to do it (which is pricey) or doing it myself.

How much would it be if it was a standard thing from dealer as a extra add on? Shame that company can't say for sure they can get it to work.

Cruise control was never a factory option with Lupos and Arosa's.

With the A2 it did have a factory option, so all the wiring is already in place so it just needs connecting up which is why its always listed but the Lupo's/Arosa's aren't.

In essential to get the Lupo/Arosa to work this wiring will need to be made. From what i see its a case of 4 wires being hooked up to the stalk and ECU, with VAGCOM enabling it.

But i don't want to do it, but at the same time i'd rather spend £200 on a nice headunit rather than on some cruise control work that might not work and carrys no gaurentee

I see your point.

Frying the ECU was a concern.

But I went for it anyway.

Just think you'd be in an exclusive group of only three cruise enable arosa's (two currently)

Right hello everyone i know this is an old post but i thought it was more appropiate here,

i have been looking into installing cruise control on my Tdi lupo but no one seems to know what stalk to use so ive been looking around etos and done a little picture of the stalks from a golf and a lupo.

they look identical apart from the golf one has the hazard warning switch on they have the same mounting ETC, so leads me to belive that the lupos are a modified version of the golf and other vag that use these stalks. my next step is to work out if you can modify the golf one so the hazard switch doesnt effect the wiring etc..... will be goin to scrapp later to see if i can "obtain" one any how heres the pic with part number etc

Have you looked at the T4 caravelle stalks, maybe the same as a Passat, B5 is it?

I didnt get that picture for you did i, ill take a pic of our old (standard) stalk tonight. THe cruise one fitted with no problems, and looks the same but with the cruise buttons

How old is the golf that stak if from? They havent had the hazard switch there for about ten years or more!

Obviously the cruise stalk is fitted to our Caravelle, but the pat number on the box should be thr right one for the crusie stalk, as thats the box it came in!

Im not sure if its the same fit as the Lupos though, it does look very similar!

the stalk is from the old mk3 golf, is the caravelle a transporter if so what year so i can check the diagrams of the stalk..

least were getting some where i put the "materialnummer" in and couldnt find anything so i will try and speak to VW

Right phoned VW up they said i need to speak to there VAN centre as they cant order these parts in.....

so after another call i spoke to a kind gentlemen gave the part number and he come back with a price of £65.01 Including VAT

Thats why it didnt show up in my part cat as its a van part so now i need to check the connections on my lupo see if there the same will get some pics later

Hmm, i was thinking it would be a shared part with the passat or something. It seems not then!

I had my indicator stalk changed on my arosa a few months go, i ment to keep the old one to compare them, but i forgot :blush:

BTW, its a 2003 T4 Caravelle - transporter.

Would be a nice easy fit if the connections are the same! Although manufacturers rarely make things easy :lol:

Right just whipped the steering cowl of my lupo to take a look at the connections and tbh they seem the same, but i have took a couple of pics although there not brill they "hopefully" will be good enough to compare

The difference that i think is there is that the lupo has a two layer connection (smallest) and the van doesnt but, the cruise control might be same as lupo?? just the matter of paying £65 to bring home and try :S then get charged if it doesnt fit lol not a win win situation

The next step would be to see if we can compare the normal lupo one to the one you took of your cara, cardaft
