Urban Fox Query - Loudspeakers & Mileage.

Hi. I purchased a new Urban Fox today - nice car. On trying out the stereo I pressed the button to adjust the forward and rear speakers. Nothing happened in the rear. When I checked the speaker compartment it was empty! Sans speakers.

The VW website says standard equipment includes 4 speakers. By this do they mean the two tiny speakers near the windscreen and the two standard speakers in the front doors rather than six?

Aside from the above. When I was adjusting the time clock the mileage and trip zeroed themselves!!! Don't know how it happened but it did.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank You

Hi and welcome to the world of owning a Fox!

In reference to the speakers - the four refer to the 2 x Tweeters and 2 x Mids in the front. I have been trying to sort a pair out for the rear.

I have discovered thus far that - you can add a rear set to the standard head unit but I could not see any wires to the rear so it will be a matter of running your own ones. I finally managed to get the right keys to get it out (Only about £1 a pair and you need two pair).

Next step is to discover where the wires go as there appears to be wires for the rears at the head unit end.

In reference to the clock issue - not sure but I think you adjust it by turning the knob left and right and reset the trip by pushing it in....

Many thanks Rob.

As for the clock. Yes, I turned it left and right - hours/minutes. If held while twisted it goes through the hours/minutes quickly. Or it can be done one click at a time. What I'm perplexed about is the mileometer - not trip - resetting to zero!

By the by. How many keys come with the car? I was given one with a chip and one without. Obviously cutting down on costs.

Thanks again.

It rest the mileage confused.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="confused.gif" />

So you mean it went from having 1K on the clock or whatever it was down to 0? surely not?

What do you mean about your key? so only one key works because only one has a chip? that carntbe right either, surely confused.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="confused.gif" />

Car. Yep, the dealer gave me just one key with a chip press lock/unlock and one plain key with a serial number. Both keys work but only the chipped key will undo the central locking - as expected.

Maybe I'm thinking it would be like my ex Toyota which had two sets of chipped keys and a master.

And yes I had done 56 miles from the dealer and when I twiddled (technical term) the hour counter it reset the trip and mileometer to zero. The ignition was switch on at the time but no engine running. Buggered if I know how I did it.

Oh righ ti c, you mean you have one key with two buttons to work the RCL and then one plain key with no buttons with VW badges on either side and then a black plastic tag with the key code?

If so then thats right, they only give you one RCL key, thats exactly like i got with my Arosa, infact the keys are identicle.

Hmm thats hard to believe, thats a serious fault if that is resetting the mileage, are you sure you wernt on trip when the thing rest? what happens if you press the reset button once? It should revert back to mileage.

Ive forgotten how the fox is though, mine has mileage and then under that the trip reading, if its like that and both have gone back to zero then you have problems!

As said by cardaft, only one key will do rcl but the other key will disable the alarm if inserted into the ignition in 30sec (iirc). also (iirc!) the display shows trip or total mileage, not both at the same time, so resetting will only have affected the trip. Please my excuse my poor product knowledge..I'll see what I can fathom out re rear speakers.

Hi again. Yes I was amazed. I half expected it to reset the trip meter but not both. To give you an idea. It has a knob on the left for adjusting the brightness of the display and the right knob for adjusting the time and the trip. A push in adjusts the trip. On the orange dial it shows the trip at the top and the mileage at the bottom.

I've since tried to do what I did earlier but it seems to be working fine and won't zero the mile-ometer. I just don't trust electronic stuff. Heck, if the second hand dealers with shady shades latched on to it they'd be sniggering all the way to the bank.

I'll see how it goes and if it happens again I'll take it to the dealer.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

Good News on the Speaker front ( I think )

After taking off the rear plastic panels in the back - took some doing - I have found that is wiring for speakers from the head unit!

It is connected to some sort of special VW connector but, finally I think a cheap upgrade to the sound system is possible!

Also looks like 6 or 6 1/2 speakers (measured from opposing mounting holes......)

I'll let you know how I get on! shades.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shades:" border="0" alt="shades.gif" />

Right, rear speakers are in!

6.5" ones are ok. You will need larger D clips than those you will probably be supplied. I needed 8x size 10 clips from Halfrauds with matching screws.

As for getting the panels off. It's a bit of a ar*e no matter whether the seats are folded up or down but start near the seatbelt (front) and just start to give it a tug. Be aware of the clips at the rear end of the panel by the rear seatbelt, they are quite delicate!

Install is a breeze once the panels are off, if you can get a set of speakers with the 'European' easy fit adapter, I think that may marry up to the plug on the end of the speaker wires already present in the Fox. These can be found right near the floor of the car where the other cables are.

Once in, just get the panels back in place and push fit. Took me about 40 minutes all in all.

The only bummer is that there is no separation of the front and rear of the speaker and so the bass isn't great. If you want that, you'll need a sub!

Hope that helps! style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

just booked mine in at trilogy (its a car audio and alarm specialist across the road from my house that my mate owns so i get it at a resonable rate) having a set of front speakers and components, rear speakers and another 12" sub fitted, should be going in a week or 2 so i will let you know how it sounds and get some pics if poss. don't know what makes yet the sub will be a JBL one like the one i already have but he's gonna ring me from his supplyers and let me know the prices in my budget, so then all i'll need is a head unit smile.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> looking at a kenwood double din dvd/sat nav or something simlar

Hey mate.

No special tools required for the speaker install itself. However some speaker manufacturers (I think Kenwood is one) supply a "European socket" on their speakers. I think this will allow connection straight to the socket already behind the rear panels in the Fox. This would save you the trouble I had which meant I had to patch in to the speaker cables to connect them to the speaker terminals.

However, once the panels are off, it's an easy job. In Halfrauds I found extra D clips in their 'Parts' area. They always have a section which has loads of little packets of screws and things. The D clips are normally supplied with your new speakers too.

Don't ask the numptys at Halfrauds anything - Or VW to be honest. No one seems to know much about the Fox at this point!

If in doubt - take some photos and i'll help if I can!

Just had our new FOX delivered and so far am well pleased, although I cant wait to get past running it in so I can work the engine a bit more. Anyway, how did you get on with the Kenwoods in the rear? What model were they? and did the fader become active after fitting?

Also, just for information for anyone whos interested. I was well pleased the audio system was the mp3 version and there looks to be a aux socket in the glove compartment. Also they seem to have dropped the urban badge and the 1.2 badge.

Hi guys

like you i only just got my fox on monday.

Not sure about your odometer resetting it shouldn't do that!!

with mine i only got two keys one with the remote central locking and one normal key which works the central locking by the drivers door lock. Mine only has the front speakers in the door too. I noticed that too, when i picked up my car it is only badged as a fox it has no 'urban' or engine size badging on the back

hi guys,

i've had my fox for 6 months now and i'm very tempted to sort out some more speakers in it

if robster can do it in 40 mins then why can't i?? :P

regarding the keys - the RCL locking one is obvious we can all work that one out. as for the other one - you have to HOLD the key in the "unlock" position for the hazards to flash, and the same for locking it to enable the imobiliser.

If you want better bass I'd highly recommend an aftermarket head unit and get rid of your VW Blaupunkt unit. The bass and overall sound quality in my Lupo dramatically improved with just a change of head unit. I got some speakers going in the front later today though. :P

Hi Guys,

Following the instructions on this forum, I managed to add rear speakers to my Fox today!

A few notes for those undertaking this themselves:

1. 17cm Pioneer speakers seem to fit fine, and there is a 'lookup' utility on the pioneer website.

2. Taking out the rear panelling is easiest with the bech seat slid all the way forward, and the backs down with boot open.

3. The wiring for the speakers from the head unit to the speaker 'bay' are already in place, and you just need to wire your speakers to these.

(4. But they use a funny connector which I ignored and stripped away)

5. Took me (and a friend) about 2 hours to do the first side (don't laugh) but only 20mins to do the second side once it was all worked out.

6. Now the stereo has true f/b fader as well as l/r balance.

I hope this helps, and thanks to all who posted advice on this topic.

Ben
